First Timers celebrating Birthday and Anniversary

Hello,

my boyfriend and I are staying at Walt Disney World for the first time in September. It will also be our first visit ever to the United States. We will be staying on property the whole time (13 days).
During our visit we are celebrating the 29 birthday of my boyfriend and a few days later our fifth anniversary. On his birthday we want to visit Epcot during the day and MNSSHP in the evening. I'd like to prepare something "special" that day for him (as a small extra surprise). Since our MDE accounts are linked it should be something that does not show up there. Also we are currently searching for something special but relaxing to do on our anniversary.
Any suggestions?

Thanks very much :)
Sarah

Well, get birthday/celebration puns at guest services and wear them. Also note on your ADRs that you’re celebrating.

As a birthday surprise you could order a cake (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/en_CA/guest-services/cake-orders/)or an in-room celebration (flowers/snacks/stuff) (http://disneyworld.disneyfloralandgifts.com/category/in-room+celebrations.do) Those won’t show up on MDE, but neither of them are particularly inexpensive.

Anniversary-wise, you could consider a massage at one of the spas if that’s your sort of thing. Or a carriage ride. Or do one of the tours. (https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/en_CA/events-tours/) The Animal Kingdom has some fun tours that could be rather special.

Enjoy the trip!

The nighttime safari at the Animal Kingdom Lodge is really fun. We did that on our last trip a couple weeks ago. You get some really up close looks at the animals and you get night vision goggles to help the experience. Highly recommend if you're into animals. Note again, this is at the lodge, not the Animal Kingdom park.

Thank you so much for your kind response!

@RememberWhen We will get a birthday pin for him, but I never thought about letting anyone know that he is celebrating in advance. I will definitely call our ADRs and the hotel.
Unfortunately the in-room celebration is way over our budget. But now I am thinking about decorating our room myself (to save money and make it more personal).
We will also check out the massages and tours for our anniversary.

@Herdman Seems you had a great time at the nighttime safari. Since we will stay at the AKL (part of our stay) we definitely have to consider that.

You can definitely decorate your room! That would be fun! I’ll try to think of other free/inexpensive things you can do.

You should wear your pins the whole trip, not just on your birthday/anniversary. Most people do, and the CMs are often very good about wishing “Happy Birthday” to people with pins.

Doesn't it seem a little bit 'over the top' if we are wearing our pins the whole stay? We will get the First Time and Anniversary for both of us and the Birthday one only for my boyfriend. Guess I feel more comfortable wearing the First Time Pin during the whole trip while wearing the other two only on the specific date... What do you think?

The trip before our last one fell during my birthday, and I wore the birthday button the entire trip. I was celebrating the whole time so why not!

Each trip, I try to plan something to surprise my husband since he doesn't love WDW as much as I do. The tours don't show up on the MDE account unless you add it as a note. At Epcot, I surprised him with the Behind the Seeds Tour and a food seminar during Food and Wine Festival. At AK, it was the Caring for Giants tour.

All right, seems like I'm overthinking the whole pin issue way too much and we just have to wear them the entire trip without feeling unhonest.

@LeighM do you recommend the behind the seeds tour?

My husband and I like gardening and the Behind the Seeds tour was really interesting, especially the hydroponics. It also helped that Living with the Land is one of our favorite rides so it was worth it to go behind the scenes. The tour isn't expensive (we had a discount with Disney Visa as well). The tour is about an hour and it doesn't cut into too much park time. We lucked out and were the only people on our tour. Which meant the entire bag of cucumber slices was all mine :joyfull:

Thank you all so much for sharing your experience!
I will definitely consider doing a tour. Both the behind the seeds tour and the nighttime safari at AKL seem to be interesting to us. Since we are very fascinated about how Disney Magic works I think the keys to the kingdom tour might be an option as well. Do you have any experience with that one?
Is it necessary to book a tour far in advance or is it possible spontaneously?

I'd suggest having Sunday brunch at California Grill to celebrate your anniversary. We've celebrated both a birthday and our engagement at the brunch and those experiences were really special. the brunch provides an opportunity for great daytime views of WDW, particularly MK. The spread is also amazing with bottomless mimosas included as well. There's also a bloody Mary bar (extra charge) if that's more your thing. Lovely jazz musicians playing throughout the meal. The whole experience is very relaxing and offers a break from the hustle and bustle of park days. Finally, with your receipt, you can come back that evening and watch the MK fireworks from the outdoor viewing area - a great way to top off a celebratory day!

Side note - we'll be there in September as well! It's become a tradition for us to visit Labor Day weekend. Hope y'all enjoy all your celebrations!

I've never done the Keys to the Kingdom tour. Is that the one that's 4-5 hours long? The only long tour I would be interested in doing would be the Wild Africa Trek. I don't like losing that much park time so most of them don't appeal to me. It would be necessary to book ahead of time if you're going during a busy time of year, doing a popular tour, or if there's a day/time you want. I think most tours open up at 60 days but I'm not totally positive on that. I typically book my tours after I schedule our FP+ so I have a better idea of our schedule. Once, a time I preferred was sold out and had to do either an earlier or later one but nothing that was horrible with our schedule.

What days in September. I will be there 9/25 to 10/4. Having a complete stranger working behind the scenes should be a way to pull off a surprise.

We’ve done Keys to the Kingdom. I really enjoyed it, but it’s not inexpensive. You get to ride a couple of rides and go backstage. And the guide tells you lots of interesting bits.
