First Timer

So I finally booked the hotel and flights, we are officially coming to Florida 9/14-9/21. We are doing 1 day at universal and the rest of the days of the parks. I am so used to disneyland since I live in the area there that you can do everything in one day pretty much. This is the first time to WDW. Any tips, restaurant recommendations, recommendations on what parks to go to when? I want to see all the night time entertainment. So Fantasmic, Wishes, Illuminations, and the electrical parade. I don't care for the daytime entertainment. I know we want to explore Downtown disney at some point and take in Cirque du Solei. I don't even know where to start.

One daytime entertainment you should really consider is the Festival of Fantasy Parade at MK. Usually every day @ 3pm. They debuted this last year and the new floats and dancers costumes are gorgeous!! I never usually do much daytime entertainment eithet but that parade is a must to see at least once! The Maleficent dragon even breaths fire! Awesome! Me and my DH loved it! :)

Any tips for Fastpass+? I havent researched enough to know about fastpass+ and the best time of the day to have your fastpasses booked. We are thinking of having our schedule for parks look like this:
Tues- Universal
Wednesday- Animal Kingdom and then going to see Cirque at night
Thurs- Rest Day/Play it by ear
Fri- Magic Kingdom in the morning and Epcot at night with Illuminations
Saturday- Water Parks/Pool Day heading to MK at night to watch MSEP and Wishes
Sunday- Hollywood Studios and Fantasmic (Probably doing the Dining package at mama melrose)

Does this sound like we will be able to get a lot done? I know at Epcot and Animal Kingdom we won't need a full day probably.

ok- do you have park hopper tickets? You can get by without them, but you might want them if you see that you have done everything you want at a park... I would plan 1- 1/2 days at MK (its different than DL), one day at AK, and DHS and maybe two days at Epcot (it;s huge and a lot of walking).

From there- look at which restaurants you might be interested in... if you choose a restaurant out of a park- it can take up to an hour to get there if you use their buses) and plan your restaurants based on the parks you are in... (a good website for menus is allears.net)

If you take in Cirque, it might be good to do on the day of AK (you can see this park in less than a full day).

Ride the rides that repeat in both places- they are very different... ;) Plan on lots more walking (6-10 miles per day). I noticed that Disney World has much wider walkways and things are farther apart to have room for the crowds-which translates to more walking for everything... Seriously- its really larger.

Ride the monorail from Epcot to the MK if you can- its different than at DL- its actually a 15 minute long ride... (it's outside both parks-not a ride in the park).

If you are moving between parks/DTD/hotels, use the buses, or boats(depending on where you are going), but plan on it taking a while. It's free and included in your hotel stay (if you are staying on property).

Have fun- you will have a great time- WDW is like DL, but much larger and more spread out- just more to love!)

One Little Spark...
1) Don't skip the 3p parade at MK, it's pretty fun to watch. I haven't seen FoF, but it's a relaxing thing to do. There are no other daytime parades at Disney right now (they shut down the ones at HS and AK).

Watch it from Frontierland. The parade route runs from Frontierland over to MS and exits stage there. Frontierland is far less crowded for viewing, as most people crowd around the hub and main street. Also, there is seating over there (rockers, railroad tie planters and raised patios). My favorite way to do it is show up about 30 mins early, snag a Turkey Leg (they are sold directly across from the rockers) and snag a rocker or planter seat and wait for the show while eating a snack/lunch.

2) Do NOT skip making ADRs. At DL it's not really required...but at WDW it is a must. I know you had another thread about this, but if you want to do ANY table service, even if it seems like it's a lower end offering (not just BoG) make the ADR. You can always try and modify it later, and they are fairly forgiving for the 30 minutes around your ADR time (so, what I'm saying is you can show up early, and most of the time they'll be able to seat you, and if you a few minutes late, they won't hold it against you, though you shouldn't be more than a few minutes late because that's just poor manners...but things do happen)

3) Do NOT miss your ADRs. You will be charged $10 per person on the reservation if you do, unless you cancel 24 hours in advance.

4) I agree about riding the rides that both parks "share". You'll find that many of them, specifically the Magic Kingdom/Disneyland crossovers, are very different. I'll keep to myself which I prefer for which park, but it makes for some fun retrospective discussion after the ride, imho.

The only ones that don't follow this pattern are Little Mermaid (queue is VASTLY different, but it's pretty much the same exact ride) and Sourin (same comments).

So, now some very important questions...

Do you plan to rent a car or take the busses / monorails?

Where are you staying for your Uni day?

What are your plans for Uni (it really is a 2 - 3 day thing, you'll be hard pressed, especially if you are not staying at a Uni Deluxe hotel with the unlimited Express Pass to see it all in 1)?

Which resort are you staying at?

What Dining Experiences interest you? Fine Dine? Character Dine? Any favorite types of food? One thing WDW beats the SOCKS off of Disneyland (though not Anaheim / LA) is the variety of food choices.

Lots of good advice in this thread - just wanted to add that Cirque du Soleil is an awesome show to be seen at least once in life. :) I saw Totem in my hometown, but La Nouba was definitely much more entertaining! (Maybe it was being in WDW that made it that way). Definitely make a dinner reservations at Downtown Disney, and wrap up the evening with the experience!

A note...while the theater at DTD was built specifically for this show, and there really is no such thing as a "bad seat", there are some "better" areas.

Some prefer the section higher up. I've done it from the front row center twice...and I love the interaction with the clowns preshow and the other acts...

But, for front row, you can't buy through Disney. You'll have to contact the Cirque Box Office directly.

We sat in the front too! A lot of the show is aerial, but still a great view and everything felt so close and real. I love watching the performer's facial expressions. They're like athletes and actors bottled into one. :p

Would advise OP to purchase tickets sooner rather than later so you have wider selection of seats within budget!

I also grew up going to DL. Everything about WDW is so much bigger. Familiarize yourself with the different modes of transportation from ferries to monorails, it takes time to get from one park to another so you have to take into account travel time. You can't just walk across the way and enter the other park.

Epcot takes more than 1 day!!! lol Just the world showcase takes up a whole day usually by itself and that's not including Future world in the front. That is multiple day park just like MK is. I would highly suggest not having a "rest" day due to your already burning a day at Uni and using that as an additional day for Epcot etc.
Also look at the park hours again and see when evening EMH's are to best utilize which park to go to on which day. I highly reccomend going to the park each day with evening EMH. You can walk on most rides with little waits esp the last 2 hours that are the EMH. I think MK has the evening EMH on Wed while your there and Epcot has the evening EMH Thursday. HS is the Sunday so you are good on that one. We always utilize evening EMH at each park to get more done and have more valuable time in those parks with smaller crowds into the evening. :)

Well with Epcot we only want to eat dinner there and do three rides as well as watch illuminations. Other than that we don't care too much for it. So that is why it won't take a full day.

Oh okay gotcha. That is one of me and DH's fave parks but everyone is different. MK and HS evening EMH are wonderful like mentioned then if you do not want to spend as much time at Epcot etc. Otherwise your plans look fine. :)

If you are used to Disneyland my best tip would be to hit "your" highlights and plan on seeing more stuff next time you visit. We've gone every year since 09 and still never been to the water parks, been in a Disney resort pool, eaten at half the restaurants, ridden Kali River, or ridden the TTC ferry boats. Still waiting to see the water pageant, food and wine, flower and garden, see the stupid yeti move, and the Pirates cruise. Each visit we cross more stuff off our bucket list like special park tours, Osborne Lights, MNSSHP, Ohana luau, the backyard BBQ, Beaches and Cream, and Star Wars weekends. I learned long ago that you are the only one who can pick your must do's. Go and enjoy but know you are saving some stuff for next time. Have a great trip and start planning the next one on the way home. Enjoy.
