Trip Report First Time Staying On Property - Bazillions of Photos!

We got back over a month ago, and I'm just now getting around to digging through the 1000+ photos I took!

In lieu of having done a proper pre-trip report I'll summarize briefly how we planned. We brought our boys (DS 7, DS 9) to the World for the first time last year (March 2013) and stayed offsite at Orange Lake resorts. Prior to that, my wife & I had been as kids but neither of us had ever stayed on-property.

Less than a year after the boys' first trip, we were all itching to find a way to get back. I overheard my aunt & uncle discussing with my cousin & her two kids (DD 10, DS 6) that they would be going February 2014, so we all agreed it would be super fun to head down at the same time. My aunt hadn't researched nearly as much as I've been since she hadn't been since the mid-80's. I offered to help since I've been reading and listening to podcasts pretty steadily since the first trip.

We agreed to head down the week of 2/1-2/8 2014, which was great timing to not only escape our dreadful Midwest winter, but also to capitalize on some very low crowd levels (mostly 1's - 4's of 10 on TP Crowd Calendar). So our next decision was where to stay. I shared the option to rent an AllStar Vacation home and have our own pool etc, but my aunt didn't want to deal with any driving. Onsite it was!

I discussed her budget and we agreed to shoot for something in the $150-200/night range. While we could have hit Art of Animation or a value, I figured we were in the range to explore some of the moderates. I even asked the guys over at WDW Today what the differences were between moderates and they dedicated an entire episode to help me out! Huge thanks to Matt Hochberg, Len Testa, Mike Newell and Mike Scopa for taking the time to focus on my dilemma!!

MODERATE RESORT WDW TODAY PODCAST BREAKDOWN:

Was super great to hear such experienced dudes weigh all the pro's and cons. I settled on Port Orleans French Quarter since it hit our budget and required the least walking. I knew my aunt & uncle liked the vibe of New Orleans as they'd visited before. Excited, I called up my aunt to share the recommendation.

Little did I know, she'd already went and booked a theme park view room for the 5 of them in the Contemporary, just 10 min walk from MK! Clearly the budget had expanded "just a bit" but we were excited to try it out as I still have memories of wanting to someday stay at "that resort the monorail goes through" dating back to my first trip in 1983. We booked a Bay Lake view room of our own and began counting the days until we could make our ADR's.

Rather than retype the whole story, I'm going to cheat and post a link to a podcast interview trip report I recorded shortly after getting back. I'll be focusing mostly on posting pics up here to round out some of the details and hit bits & pieces that the podcast glosses over.

After an afternoon break by the pool, we were ready to bus to the TTC and take the monorail from there to Epcot! The daytime resort loop monorail was down :(

After obligatory Spaceship earth photo, we focused on Future World West. Soarin' FP+ and Livin' with the Land were up first.

After that, we made our way to Imagination. While I still prefer the original with Dreamfinder, I don't hate this as much as some people do. Several of the scenes are still reminiscent of the original on some levels.

After that we hit Captain EO and O Canada! Incredible how much of a time warp EO was! I sorta wish it would have been Magic Journeys if they are to do throwback, as that was what played at the Magic Eye theater when I first went to EPCOT. I won't miss EO once it's gone.

At that point, my aunt and cousin split off to do a chef pairing dinner at Kouzzina by Cat Cora at Boardwalk. My uncle headed back to the resort to relax and the rest of us hit dinner at Coral Reef. I love the ambience and food at Coral Reef. Maybe not the best meal on property but we have yet to be disappointed.

We even got to see a SCUBA tour go through. I didn't get a good photo but one of the guys made funny gestures and waved to us from inside the tank.

By this time it was getting late. We did a quick jaunt to Mission Space before heading on one last ride of Spaceship Earth before heading back to the resort.

Day 6 was our HS day. Last trip was our first trip to HS and we botched it bad: were up til 1am EMH the night before so were tired/crabby, didn't get to park in time for rope drop, lost our tickets, rained, etc. We ended up leaving that time before we even got to use our FP for TSMM as it was a bit of a train wreck.

This year we were determined to have a fun do-over which started by getting a full night's sleep after Day 5 Epcot.

We managed to hit rope drop and split into two groups. The younger guys went with my aunt to TSMM and Star Tours, while the rest of us hit RnR 2x followed by our FP+ for ToT. I hadn't gotten to try RnR or ToT last trip so these were fun firsts for me.

I absolutely loved the pre-show and queue for ToT. Incredibly immersive and eerily tense. None of us had ridden it before so it was an awesome buildup for a great attraction. Comparing this to Universal's IoA Doom's Fear Fall is 100% in favor of ToT for all the story and theming elements.

my wife is the one in green with her eyes smashed shut. My son appears to have vanished between me and my cousin. Afterwards, he decided it was his new favorite ride, giving EE a run for its money.

Next we met up with the rest of the group at the sorcerer's hat and hit GMR. This was my first time on here as well (did I mention how much of a botch we'd had our first time to HS?). I found our tour guide to be a very poor enunciator, making it hard to understand his patter and a bit annoying to listen to. The animatronics and movie choices felt dated and my kids found much of the ride boring. This attraction feels ready for a refurb to me in a big way. It seems they could do a better job of telling the story of the evolution of movies more clearly, following from the first animation, live action, sound and color through various evolutionary leaps in directing and special FX to land somewhere closer to today. The fact that I never rode this ride when I was young probably soured it for me since I don't have any nostalgia working for me.

After that we hit the Indiana Jones stunt show and had a great time. The kids have yet to see any of the series but recognized scenes from their Lego Indiana Jones video games. They enjoyed all the action with the rest of us.

From there we hit a Fantasmic dining package lunch at Mama Melrose's. This wasn't my favorite meal of the week but it was pretty good food and a decent atmosphere. Best of all, we had reserved tickets for Fantasmic that night! After that, we did the Lights Motors Action show. This was one of the few things that went right last trip and the kids were excited to see it again.

after the show, we took in Muppets and then on to Star Tours (2nd time for some of the kids!).

From there we let some people shop while others of us hung out at the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground.

TSMM was fantastic! Super glad we had FP+ as I don't know that I find anything worth waiting 90min+, but I definitely think it was one of my favorite attractions at WDW for all the fun interactions and the way the theming makes you feel like you're in a toy box.

After a quick supper at the ABC Commissary (meh.) we finally made our way over to Fantasmic! I'd never seen it before so I was excited to take in a new (for me) night time spectacular. Unfortunately it was about 5 min after we found our awesome seats in the reserved dining section of the amphitheater that the rain started to pour down. Announcers told us it would be delayed so we waited in the rain. Eventually it let up so they started the show!
HS_day6_35.jpg

Less than 5 min later the rain kicked in hard and they ended up shutting it down mid-show. So much for that idea! Even the best laid plans can be thwarted by Mother Nature. We all were tired by then anyways so it seemed we were able to leave content that we'd had a fun day regardless of how it ended.

stay tuned for Day 7: My birthday in Epcot!

We wanted to wrap evening early to try to get the kids some good sleep. But we managed to squeeze a few more things in after supper...

Figured we'd let the boys blow some of their saved up allowance on some spinny lights first.

From there, we headed out to Adventureland to hit Jungle Cruise by night.

My first time riding it at night. It's so much cooler than during the day!!

We kept our receipt and headed back to the room to grab the tripod and my remote shutter as I wanted to try out the new camera with some fireworks photography. They let you back up to the California Grill to view Wishes if you have a receipt from earlier that evening.

it was still hard to take in the fact that we were actually staying in the Contemporary.

Day 7 was my birthday and also our last day in the parks. My family surprised me with the birthday button that morning in the resort, which was a fun unexpected touch - I had pictured needing to stand in line at Town Hall in MK to get it.

We split into a couple groups this day as we had some recap of MK we wanted to do but we all wanted to join up for an afternoon in Epcot.

We stopped through the shops on Main street and due to the prices, I had to be content for now with some photos of a few of the awesome decor pieces available.

I love the art of David Ho . He taps into my love of the exaggerated art of and the more gothic art of H.R. Geiger or Edward Gory.

I'm also a sucker for all things Tiki, so these were very tempting... until I had to look at the price.

It was rainy off and on, but we planned to hit some more Pirates adventure before checking a Hall of Presidents and Philharmagic off our list.

Hall of Presidents was great - we had skipped it on the last trip so it's always fun to cram a bit more history at the kids.

I feel like they really need a re-do on Barak Obama's animatronic - doesn't really capture him, IMHO.
