First Time/Birthday Celebration "Perks"

Okay, this is a tad misleading. I am going with someone who is a first timer to Disney and while we are their we are celebrating his 50th birthday.

While I know there are no "Perks" I was looking for things to do that are special. I know to get buttons at the front desk or Guest Services at the Parks.

I was also told to go to the Guest Services at my hotel and ask for ideas or suggestions about things we could do or see.

I am not looking for free food or line jumping or being in a parade. I do know sometimes these things do happen, mostly a small free desert is what I heard but still not looking for free food.

So, does anyone have any ideas what to do that Disney offers or suggests for celebrating an event while there?

There are not a whole lot of freebies anymore but there are several things that you can do. You could order a in room gift from the Disney Floral and Gift site. If he is a golfer you could take him out for a round of golf on site. Book him a massage at the GF. Depending on when you go you could do the Star Wars Desert party. If you go during Food and Wine they bring in some great acts for the Eat to the Beat Concert Series. The Atlanta Braves still do spring training at ESPN if you are there you can catch a game. Lots of possibilities!

Disneys got sooo many guests vacationing there in order to celebrate things, they can't do give aways for everybody, but mentioning the 50th B-day to resort CM when checking in may get you something. When you get your B-day pin make sure they mark 50TH on it which will make it stand out over the hundreds of others CM's will be seeing.
How about taking a characters balloon ride at DTD. Thats out of the ordinary. Go parasailing at the Contemp, thats a blast. Like pins? There are some pins that can be bought that can connect to his B-day month, favorite character or attraction that can later on be displayed at home commemorating the 50th B-day trip. Or order a CM character drawing at one of the shops that does them and ask it to be made special for a B-day theme. Some resorts also have artists in the lobbies doing guest caracatures for a fee.
Disneys a fabulous spot to celebrate, what a way to mark a 50th B-day... have a great time.

You could order them a birthday cake to be delivered at one of the restaurants you'll be eating at? DH did that for me at Be Our Guest once, and the cake was delicious...chocolate cake with a Bailley's Irish Cream filling and buttercream icing, with a small white chocolate Cinderella Castle on top. It's making me hungry just thinking about it :)

Sometimes the servers will bring the birthday celebrant a cupcake, a card signed by them (or Mickey) and sing. I miss the days when you arrived back at your resort room after a day at the parks to find Mickey left you an autographed photo and card.

This isn't something you can DO but often the Cast Members will wish you happy birthday when they see your pin. In my experience the CMs in Tomorrowland are the best about doing that.

Bragging anecdote - for my 16th birthday, a CM made everyone (I mean the guests) on the Carousel of Progress sing Happy Birthday to me before the show started. It was embarrassing but super memorable. Something like that could happen to you/your friend!

CMs will also sometimes give you stickers if you've got an "I'm celebrating"-type pin on, if you're into stickers.

Ride on the Jungle Cruise (I'm sure you were planning on doing that anyway, but still). Make sure the skipper sees the button because they'll sing a hilarious song. ;)

As said, you'll get nothing for nothing. And you'll pay through the nose for an on property cake.

But make sure he wears a badge for attention from custodians to parade characters. My favourite was being wished a happy birthday by Santa Claus on his MVMCP float some years ago.

Prince Phillip wished me happy birthday from his high perch on the parade float one afternoon. I was thrilled because Sleeping Beauty is MY film. And surprised that from that height and the crowds around he was able to see my button. Made my day.

One year I was given a free treat at the Bakery in DHS because of my bday button. You never know! Hopefully characters notice the button and give some extra special attention.

Expect a lot of "Happy Birthdays" and maybe a dessert somewhere, though that seems much rarer these days. I'll never forget what happened to my wife about 12 years ago. We were lined up for the parade on main street. It was a big crowd, but the parade hadn't started yet. One of the main street parade attendees came up to her, wished her a happy birthday, asked her how old she was, etc. My wife volunteered. He stood on something to make him taller in the middle of the street and yelled as loud as he can, "Hi everyone, may I have your attention please! This is Kathy, and she's 38 years old today! Can we all wish her a Happy Birthday!" My wife turned many shades of red that day. My kids looked at me and said, "Dad, how could you?" I said, no kids, I didn't make this happen, WDW made this happen.
