Walt Disney Pictures has confirmed that the first screenings for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End will start at 8pm on Thursday, May 24.

With anticipation sky-high for the third "Pirates," Disney could conceivably regain bragging rights for the top opening frame. Spider-Man 3 ($151 million) this weekend earned $15 million more than "Dead Man's Chest" ($135.6 million) did last year its first weekend.

Shrek the Third, by contrast, isn't budging from its opening on Friday, May 18. The core "Shrek" audience will still be in school, giving Paramount less motive to go earlier.

I was reading some POTC fan boards and some have noted that the early showings for Pirates on Thursday are already sold out for their local theaters. Out of curiosity, I checked DTD AMC's theater and noticed that there is only one showing at 8pm with seats left.

At the AMC at DTD, at least from what is being offered by AMC's online ticket purchasing site, the 8pm and 12am digital projection shows are both sold out, as are 3 other 12am showings that night with traditional projection. I wonder why those sold out before the 8pm one? Either the 8pm show was added after they sold out the midnight showings or perhaps those showings will not be open for online ticketing until the 8pm show fills first?

Either way, if you plan on seeing Pirates the day before its official release, it looks like it would be a good idea to buy your tickets now.

So these Thursday showings count towards the "opening weekend" time period, correct?

P.S. Ironically, exactly when the first showings play at 8:00 tomorrow, I'll be playing the medley in concert to open up the show.

I got my reserved seating through the Art Theater here in Champaign for the 8:01 showing. There are three theater chains in town, and the two big ones have at least 8 showings each on Thursday night, plus two at the independant theater (the one I am going to!). The nice thing is, I have my seats reserved, so I don't have to worry about waiting in line to get a good seat.

I was going to wait until memorial day, but decided I just couldn't wait!

You know what Im really suprised about is the most people are either going to the 8pm or 12pm showing. But there is also a 10pm showing (which I'm going to:sohappy: ) and most people arent interested in going to that one. I guess 10pm isnt a very "monumental" hour. :p

This hurt

I agree with some assertions that this hurt Pirates in the long run.

Disney should have done a few more promo screenings, and just opened on Friday. This would have helped the weekend numbers, possibly enough to break more records.
