Brazilian officials are talking with the Walt Disney Co. about a deal that would bring the entertainment company’s first theme park in Latin America to Brasilia, the press reported Thursday.

The Federal District’s government has put a proposal on the table for Disney executives, who “have responded positively” in early discussions, the Jornal de Brasilia newspaper said.

The capital’s government has offered Disney a 30-year lease on 175 hectares (432 acres) in Burle Marx Park for the attraction.

Although the park is a nature preserve, the decree under which it was created set aside the land in question for an amusement park that could become the Disney attraction.

Disney Parks and Resorts operates or licenses 10 theme parks on three continents, with an 11th park now under construction in Hong Kong, along with 35 resort hotels, two luxury cruise ships and a wide variety of other entertainment offerings, according to the company’s Web site.

The first amusement park Disneyland opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California.

Well, in consideration of the many complaints that Brazilian tourists seem to generate from members of this board, perhaps it's a good thing.

I was thinking the same thing...however, I'm sure those very people will find something else to complain about.

After reading that article I felt totally confused! I mean wouldn't that be a hugh mistake for WDW? They would be losing a large segment of their tourist pull that way. I thought the reason for expanding overseas was to tap "untapped" resources, not to tap WDW resources, and cause that resort to lose revenue.

It is not really as large as everyone thinks it is.

International tourists account for only 5% of the total visitors to Orlando, to be more specific, South American tourists account of only 0.3% of the total tourism into Orlando.

Most international tourists combine their Disney trip with an extended Florida vacation.....

Considering Disney could make hundreds of millions of dollars off a park in South America, and only risk potentially killing 0.3% of its Florida attendance, the decision to build there is a no-brainer.

Security-wise, Brasília would be the perfect spot in Brazil for a Disney theme park. God only knows the madness it'd be to have a Disneyland in Rio or São Paulo. That said, Brasília has absolutely nothing. It's in the middle of the country, and not so close to the big centers of the South, Southeast and Northeast.
And the biggest point against the idea would be costs. A Disney theme park ain't cheap, and I don't think the park tickets would be something very affordable even for middle class down here with the way things are right now, let alone the majority of the population.

Thank you! I was especially looking for your comments because I've never been to Brazil and I know very little about your country. Your comments are particularly valuable.

As a comparison

Interesting. What is included in the admission, meaning just the main park, or all parks (AK, WDS, DS, etc.)?
