Fireworks Snob

Have college buddies who did the shore thing and we still have get togethers at their parent's beach house... but still can't get over that whole 'pay to get on the beach' thing that is so common up there.

My first photos on the internet were VHS scans of Tron scenes and me bodyboarding in Ocean City :D

Yes... Beach tags go against principle. But it helped fund the restoration & erosion prevention measurements, so I will reluctantly pay.

It was kinda cool seeing Lewis' fireworks and Rehobeth's from across the bay.

I think so much of this depends on where you're going to see your local fireworks. If we're talking displays like the one I saw off of Galveston a few years ago or some of the ones from the Jersey Shore from my childhood, then yes, I'd agree. But...if you start bringing in displays from some of the major cities...many of those are awe inspiring in their own ways. Yes, there is no castle or Disney soundtrack, but to see New York's fireworks, DC's, or pretty much most of the major cities...well...that's a whole different ball game.

As for choreographed shows with soundtracks...I currently live in Houston...and while I don't normally go to watch the city's show, prior to having kids, we used to be able to tune into the official choreographed soundtrack on the various local radio stations and be wowed as we watch from the roof of my office's parking garage. Alternately, we have a show at the outdoor theater in our Med Center that is choreographed to a live performance from the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

But...most years, we are out on our friend's ranch, listening to a recording of Stars and Stripes Forever on a constant loop, and watching fireworks purchased from a local stand go off over their cleared pasture. No, it's not as impressive as the city displays or like being at Disney...but sometimes it's not about the quality of the display...and more about enjoying the moment and everything it means. :)

We have Gruchi Fireworks in the area, we do pretty good. Tonight we had a show Gruchi show perform to live music and amazingly they were in sync with the music. The played overture which was the song they used to use in Illuminations for the finale, that made my night a bit.

Even the Jersey Shore ones can be just as enjoyable in the moment. We watched some while from a friend's boat this weekend with perfect weather and visibility, I don't really know how anyone could find something to nitpick while in that moment.

The Long Branch, NJ show also synchs with music on 104.3 now.

Don't get me wrong...it was enjoyable in its own way back when we watched fireworks down the shore. The fireworks we saw back in the day weren't the same quality and no music, but we'd moor our boat with our friend's in one of the coves and we could see fireworks go off from several points along Barnegat Bay.

The fireworks started and I instantly thought, "where's the accompanying soundtrack?"

So yes, Disney has somewhat ruined fireworks for me, though, I must admit, they put on a pretty good finale at Ocean City (NJ) and the overall show was one of the better local ones I've seen.

You just haven't been to the right show. I've been to places that do fireworks with music that were honestly better than what you get at Disney. Not sure if Disney has scaled back their fireworks lately but they seem to be less colorful than I remembered them being in years gone by.
