I think so much of this depends on where you're going to see your local fireworks. If we're talking displays like the one I saw off of Galveston a few years ago or some of the ones from the Jersey Shore from my childhood, then yes, I'd agree. But...if you start bringing in displays from some of the major cities...many of those are awe inspiring in their own ways. Yes, there is no castle or Disney soundtrack, but to see New York's fireworks, DC's, or pretty much most of the major cities...well...that's a whole different ball game.
As for choreographed shows with soundtracks...I currently live in Houston...and while I don't normally go to watch the city's show, prior to having kids, we used to be able to tune into the official choreographed soundtrack on the various local radio stations and be wowed as we watch from the roof of my office's parking garage. Alternately, we have a show at the outdoor theater in our Med Center that is choreographed to a live performance from the Houston Symphony Orchestra.
But...most years, we are out on our friend's ranch, listening to a recording of Stars and Stripes Forever on a constant loop, and watching fireworks purchased from a local stand go off over their cleared pasture. No, it's not as impressive as the city displays or like being at Disney...but sometimes it's not about the quality of the display...and more about enjoying the moment and everything it means.
