Firework Picture Tips

I recently got a new digital camera to use when I head to Florida this fall, and one of the things I want to master (quickly if possible) is taking pictures of fireworks. Many of you probably know that digital cameras have a "fireworks mode" letting the exposure last longer and giving fireworks that stretched out look. The problem is, no human being on this earth can hold a camera perfectly still that long! Now I know a tripod is the easy answer, but I wanted to know if anyone else knew of some other tips or ways of taking photos without lugging around a tripod everywhere I went? Thanks! :D

Try resting the camera on a level surface (trash bin, railing etc) and VERY CAREFULLY pressing the shutter button. We just got back from DLP and took a mini tripod (table top version - roughly 8 inches long) - fits in the bag and is ideal for placing on a trash bin or table top/wall to get a steady shot. Some night time pics came out great; see them at Disneypix soon!

Funny that this comes up now. Over the weekend, we had some local fireworks where I was able to take a whole lot of practice pictures. And the fact that I could take them from the backyard was pretty cool, I must say. Of the 80-something I took, this one came out rather interesting. Do you see it? Or is it just me?

P.S. Anyone out there who can tell me what I can do to take better shots, I'm all ears!

Nice pun in your P.S. I see the hidden Mickey though! Hmm...looks like I might have to use a tripod, though I didn't know about the mini-tripods. Good idea marni1971. :)

In addition to the mini tripod - the use of a small bean bag will keep the camera steady and protect it from scratches off whatever surface you put it on
