Hey all I did a search for this and didnt find a story on it but I thought since it relates to disney and the news here in tampa reported it that I would post the story anyways about 3 am last night the christmas tree in the center of the Grand Californian Caught Fire and if it not for the sprinkler system in the building things could have been much worse anyways too read the story for
yourself go here http://www.nbc4.tv/news/5688821/detail.html.
Since I used to install fire sprinklers for a living I found it interesting have to say the systems might cost a butt load but they are worth it in the end as im sure disney can see now.

In a fire like this, would all/most of the sprinklers in the building go off, or just a few right above the tree? I remember them saying the guests could return to their rooms four hours later, so I am guessing the sprinklers in all the rooms did not go off.

If that were the case, can you imagine how much money Disneyland would have to pay for all the ruined belongings of the guests?!

Wow. And it was the GRAND CALIFORNIAN too. The highest end Disney hotel over there.

Well depending on the system in the building it could have been all the head in a certain area on or it can be just the head the the heat reaches and melts the red or green capsules on. most of the newer buildings today have the indiviual head system and most older buildings are certains zones and from the looks of the photos and video it was a newer system but it could have been a atrium zone so its really hard to tell without looking at the system its self.

Just curious coastermaster83...I was under the impression that when one gets set off, the change in pressure in the system sets the rest of them off. Its that true or can they be individually set off?

It depends on how they're done. Some will only go off in a certain area, not system wide, and some can go off individually. But if a set is wired together, once one goes off, they all do (in that system).

normally on the systems i worked on the only way to set off more then one was to have each little glass bulb in the center of the head melt or get broken somehow. But I have seen systems that are older with a section wide spray pattern that one goes off and all go off and the stories I could tell of stupid people hitting the heads while we were testing the systems for being ready to go lol all i can say is crack dahfsakjfhjahsfkljhsa help help water water ROFLMBO.

How do you get them off after a fire? Turn off the main and wait? It seems if they got them off sooner, they could of saved the carpet.

well i know here in tampa,fl that when we tested the systems we were installing we pumped them up to 200 psi and then had too let them sit for 24hours and not loose alot of presure in the lines. As to your question drnilescrane it wouldnt matter how fast you shut off those lines i wouldnt want to be around that carpet every again because the water that comes out of those lines is full of oils and has probably sat in the lines since the building was first build and I know for a fact that just the 24 hours that we left water in the lines when testing the buildings worked on was bad enough. Picture if you will portojohn and suffer and a stinkbomb all rolled into one and you would get a idea of what the water coming out of the lines smells like, yeah not a pretty picture. anywho so thats why they replace anything that water touches. how that cleared things up for you all

Most hotels have their sensors in zones, so the sprinklers only stay on in the needed areas until the fire spreads.

yes and that is not a fun job especially if they have been there for a while they are all seated into the pipe and we used some stuff called pipe dope and it was like locktight and once that and the tape set in you had to put some big wrenches on that mother to get it out. Also if the system is powered up you have to use special tools to get the heads off and put new ones on while its powered up and trust me its not fun at all.
