Figment's Taste Lab

To go with the 5 senses theme of Journey Into Imagination wouldn't it be great if they had Figment's Taste Lab? It could be a food stand outside the attraction that sold yummy treats. :slurp: I'd love to see something like this.
Anyone else? They already have a small food cart near Imagination. Why not theme it to the rest of the pavillion?

On the topic of this ride, I miss the last version of the ride. Everyone hated it but I enjoyed the flow of it a lot more then the current ride. The way things were presented just worked out better and the beginning and end provided a nice surprise. I feel Figment sings and certain scenes are useless because you just go through them.

But what can you do :) I need to download the last version of the ride!

A restaurant would be terrific. Especially upstairs with that wonderful view. At least a food cart would be an inexpensive starting place for the continuation of the 5 senses theme. They could specialize in "salty" and "sweet" treats. Perhaps pretzels and ice cream bars or cookies. Yikes, I'm hungry!

Upstairs in Imagination

Where do those stairs lead to(in the image works area, by the photo labs)? They circle up to something, a lounge perhaps? Or something from a previous attraction version? Just Curious if anyone knows.

that would be nice...but right now i would take anything going in the upstairs area. I took the Future World tour and saw it and it is still a nice big area with lots of potential.

I like that idea. I think a Cheesecake Factory would be good like at DisneyQuest for those of us that do not make it over there.

Boy, are you in for a story.

The Imagination Institute wasn't always comprised of a 7 minute ride and a bunch of McDonalds computer screens. Oh, no. This area was once home to the Journey into Imagination, one of Epcot's signature attractions that had more special effects than any other in Disney history at its opening. It followed a (CHARMING and DELIGHTFUL) Figment and his creator, the humble, but knowledgable, Dreamfinder through the realms of creativity. Giant artforms, pop-up books, scenes of science, and theatre were constructed by Imagineers with extreme attention to detail and meaning.

The entire area used to be full with bright colors - bright blue, light purple, and murals. The staircase was completely open, in the center of a giant loading base. Up the stairs was the IMAGE WORKS. Not only did this area offer a delightful view of Epcot, but it also housed one of the most creative areas in all of Walt Disney World. Guests could star in their own film with the Dreamfinder, paint giant photos of Figment and the Dreamfinder through the air, conduct an orchestra, and much more. This was an area that could be found no where else - a place kids and parents could enjoy at the same time.

Because of cost-cutting measures, Dreamfinder, the Image Works, and the ride were all butchered. The ride was cut in half - from a 13 minute ride to just over a 7 minute ride - and the Image Works was set to live in the dust. Dreamfinder never returned, and Figment, too, was lost and replaced by Dr. Nigel Channing. It didn't work.

Disney got more complaints than ANY OTHER ATTRACTION IN DISNEY HISTORY (combined, I've heard), totalling a million solely from Kodak. Disney HAD to bring Figment back. But the new attraction still doesn't cut it. Figment is now just a Bugs Bunny in purple skin, and the attraction is half black space, old areas covered up by black curtains. Attendance is saddening, but merchandise, of course, is plentiful (as it was even when Figment was removed from the pavilion. Ugh!)

You haven't lived until you've seen the original Journey into Imagination! You can see photographs and videos at this website - www.figmentsimagination.com and www.friendsoffigment.org - both of which are under rehab. If it weren't for the Friends of Figment, Figment may have never been brought back to the pavilion! Could you imagine - Disney trying to pull of a pavilion about Imagination with a bad budget, a butchering of classic, well-loved characters, and bad storytelling? It just doesn't work.

The pavilion will no longer be the same until the heart is brought back through the Dreamfinder, the childish delight through Figment, and the care through a brand new attraction that enlightens the senses TRULY, creating worthy memories for all who dare to enter into that pavilion whose theme stands for the very essence of the Walt Disney Company. . .

If they're the ones I think you are referring to, it's the post-show area that existed for the original attraction. It was a great area with alot more creativity than the glorified gift shop that is the "What If Labs." What if we used our Imagination to have a good post-show area again? Nah, let's try to find a way to get them to spend more money instead...

To Disney's credit, I have bought more Figment merchandise in the last three years than I ever did before. However, this is because I never knew I had to worry about Figment disappearing before...and if it happened once, it could happen again. They seem to be making a habit of eliminating the sites of my childhood memories...I refuse to let Figment go too!

As for the Image Works, it had pin tables (you know, the tables with glass tops and thin metal rods underneath that you can push up on from the underside to make funky shapes), air painting, and the rainbow tunnel. And that glass elevator...sigh. It was a kid's paradise.

Boy, are you in for a story.

Your post is a keeper General Grizz!

It's probably the best explanation I've read of what made the original ride wonderful, and why the new one feels like a slap in the face.

My memories of the old Imagination Pavilion are clearer than any others from my childhood. To me, Figment was as much the face of Epcot as Mickey is to the Magic Kingdom. To get rid of him, and then bring him back as little more than a tacked on mascot was insulting.

Imagine my horror on my honeymoon 2 years ago. I was so excited to introduce my new wife to Figment, I made Imagination our first stop at Epcot. I had heard of the new ride, and I was certain that whatever the Imagineers had come up with to replace the old one was bigger, better, more fun, more spectacular. Instead, the ride I experienced that morning broke my heart. Not an easy thing to do to a secure manly male. I spent the rest of the day struggling to convince my wife that Epcot was a great place, even though inside I felt like my childhood had been robbed from me.

My suggestion? Bring back the old ride music, Billy Barty's voice and all, and re-envision sights and sounds which hearken back to, if not completely duplicate, the old attraction.

Anyway, back to topic...

Re: the restaurant idea. Great idea! But the extension of the ideas of the new ride leaves sort of a bad, um, taste in my mouth. I would, however, love to see a restaurant with unusual food, with Figment there as our guide.

Fine nostalgic journey as usual Grizz, thank you. As I was lucky enough to experience the original many times, and unlucky enough to suffer through the second iteration...to the current, I can follow well.

It amazes me how the exhibit can be so altered and neglected but still have figment as THE symbol of Epcot. Figment merchandise, pin themes and other uses are very positive, so why wouldn't Disney (from the pure business side) want to do much more.

Just add that to the long and ever growing list of WDW but why's? :(

Imagination Recap

Wow,
That was a great narrative. I have never seen the original ride, only the current one. I feel left out. Sounds like the fans were jipped out of a family favorite yet again. With all the space in WDW, why do they get rid of some of there attractions such as this one. Can't they make a "yesterland" for old attractions and move them, sort of like a nostalgic park. 20000 Leagues was another one. They should have the subs as water taxis in the canals. Sometimes I think they do not use "their" imagination. It would be nice if they at least made videos of the rides of yesteryear so that the loyal fans have a nice souvenior to rember the ride by. For now I will check out those websites and thank you kindly for taking the time to describe it for me an the others.

Grizz... I think it's time for us to build you an entire home in that area. I'm sure we could muster enough volunteers up to build you the ultimate home -- complete with cave. :)
