Feel Like Giving Up!

Hey fellow runners

I just went to the ortho doctor yesterday and have a dislocating peroneal tendon. Right now they have "splinted" (don't know the right word) with an L shaped cut out piece of foam material, wrapped my ankle with tape and put me in a ankle brace. If after 3 weeks it's not better the Dr said he would put me in a cast....then, if that doesn't work I will have to have surgery to stich it down(doesn't that sound fun) to make it stay put!

Anyway, I am about ready to just give up on running! I've had 3 torn ligaments in my ankle, 2 stress fractures (at the same time) in my tibia and now this....all within the space of about 3 years.........I try to always make sure I'm warming up before my run and properly stretching after.....

Anyone else out there experiencing this or have experienced this? Both this type of injury and just the "I'm over it" emotion? I know alot of folks run injury free for years & years but I can't seem to be one of them....I just am very discouraged!

I wish I knew what to suggest. That sounds so frustrating. Maybe a physical therapist can offer some tips. After I had ankle surgery, I ran with a soft ankle brace for two years before I felt stable enough to run without it. I even used the brace when I ran the NYC Marathon. Maybe there's hope for you yet. In the meantime, I hope you heal quickly.

Sorry to hear about all the injuries, that is some seriously bad luck.

I don't know what kind of training you do, but have you considered doing some strength work to try to reinforce those areas? Something like P90X2 that has all kinds of balance and stability training.

Best wishes for a fast recovery.

What does your doctor say about running? I talk to my doc about my running. If he/she doesn't know you should be able to get a referral.

Wow, hate to hear this. I have a feeling that if you made it through all of these, you might just channel that energy into something else. What about cycling?

Thanks for all the encouraging words!

My DR has strongly hinted for me to explore other avenues of fitness........ Oh well. I am not giving up quite yet. There is nothing out there (in my opinion) that gives you that "I am strong" feeling like running does! HA HA!

I will see how the next few weeks progress and just go from there.

I really appreciate the idea of running with the soft brace....maybe that can be an option after this has healed to help strengthen around my ankle!

Thanks again for all the support!

I thought about this too. Maybe you can try swimming and biking, and hopefully that will help make you stronger...and you could look into sprint triathlons? Something like that?? :veryconfu

I hope things get better for you.

I have considered this as well... I just have to find someplace to swim.

The whole Tri world is intimidating at first, but I heard it is chaotic and fun.

You're right, it is SUPER intimidating. The closest I've gotten to one at this point was in college when I was the lifeguard. It just seems like a lot to think about and plan...where to swim, do you have a bike, what gear to bring for the transitions on race day, etc.

And I know a lot of runners are turned off to tris because of the swim portion...for me the bike would be my weakness. I am not great on a bike.

Having said that, triathletes seem really bada** to me, and I'm sure the training is great for overall fitness. Maybe I'll work up the guys to try one some day.

Sounds like possibly some bad running shoe choices and running form. If you really love running and want to continue, look into more efficient running methods such as Chi Running, Evolution Running or Natural Running. These teach pain/injury free techniques. I had issues with stress fractures and a torn patella tendon, but haven't had an injury (knock on wood) in the past 5 years - since changing shoes and form.

Don't give up on yourself! Sounds like you've got major hurdles trying to hold you back. Don't let them. Seriously. That's the worst thing you can do for yourself.

I have no specific experience with these things to offer. My 14 yro son who was running with me last year had to stop because of knee problems. Poor kiddo wasn't sleeping at night from all the aching but he didn't say anything for a long time because he didn't want to let me down. After a 5/6 month hiatus he still was having discomfort so we took him to a sports-specialized orthopedic. Turns out he has zero arch in his feet and his long, lanky legs were doing this crazy wobble thing with every stride which caused the knees to compensate creating the injury. He wears orthotics in his shoes now but he hasn't yet returned to running. The doctor suggested he give up running which really broke his heart. I did a lot of research online into his condition & showed him he doesn't have to give up, he'll just need to educate himself & work to overcome the problem. I'll tell you like I told my son, if you never return to running it in no means reduces your value or strength as a human. It only means your body isn't meant to run. Go find what it is meant to do then put your heart & soul into that.

Educate yourself all that can. Seek out people who are familiar with your condition. Sports medicine can do a lot with the right knowledge & support. If its meant for you to run, you will. If not, get busy finding your thing.

Gotta say, swimmers impress the crap out of me. Seriously. That's some awesome activity there! If facilities or space is an issue, I've always said I wanted to have an Endless Pool. They're small pools, maybe the size of an SUV with a flow pump at 1 end. You swim into the flow, swim in place. That's so awesome!

Good news from DR. Just had a 6 week check up. Tendon is holding in place and I can carefully resume exercise. I was instructed to splint, tape & brace my ankle before I run and wondered what kind of sofe brace you used? My ASO brace from the DR is way to bulky! Thanks for your help!

I'm pretty sure I got it at the drug store. It wasn't one of those simple sleeves that you slip over your ankle. That was part of it, but it also had two straps that came off the sides that I could criss-cross and wrap around the ankle after slipping on the sleeve. It was very flat and fit easily under my sock so I never felt it. But it definitely made my ankle feel more stable. Good luck and take it slow!

I found one at the drug store that along with the splint and tape is working quite well. Am going really slow. Alot of running & walking combined and of course no uphill running. I just walk up the hilly sections. (I live in East TN so anywhere you run around here has hills!) So far so good.....am taking it very easy though. I will say this..........it's great to be back!:sohappy:

Glad to hear it! Ironically, the past few days I've had some soreness and tightness around my outer ankle where I had the surgery years ago. Just taking it easy and hoping it's a passing nothing.
