Favorite snacks and random things in HS

So I'm finally familiarizing myself with HS since we have a day there this fall. We've never been and I didn't realize all the different little food spots, stores, etc they had (or at least it looks like it has in the MDE app). So any places y'all would recommend as far as must have snacks we may not find elsewhere or stores that have the best HS souvenirs...ya know...the things that you discover by going there, trying new stuff and exploring!!

50's Prime Time has a Peanut Butter and Jelly shake that is just awesome. Even if PB&J isn't your thing you'll enjoy it. I tried it only because I had to see if it was as good as I'd heard. You don't need a reservation to 50's to get one, just go to the bar side of the restaurant and you can order one.
Awesome! You answered my next question! But I love PB&J's and so do the kids!

I wish I had more to tell you, but HS is the one park we eat at the least. It always seems that we leave to eat at DS or a resort when go to HS. I will say that Pizzerizzo has an area upstairs that is pretty neat to eat at and not many people seem to go up there to eat (I call it the Ball Room but I'm sure it has another name.) Plus I may be the only one that really likes the pizza there :hungry:.

Thays what makes me nervous about our day. We have an ADR for sci fi at 5. I'm worried we won't fill our day. However...we don't plan on rope dropping since we do plan on being at MK the night before u til midnight so...maybe getting there later (gasp!!! I know!) will work in our favor.
That pizza place I had never heard of until today and now I've heard it twice...weird. I'm tempted to cancel our ADR for dinner just so we aren't locked in but I'll wait until toy story land opens and see what's what with that and see what FP I can get bc that's relaly the only reason we are going.

I am not a huge fan of the dining options in DHS but one still has to eat.
Here's a list of favorite bites around the park:

Caprese Sandwich (Backlot Express)
Carrot Cake Cookie (Sweet Spells)
Cream Cheese Stuffed Pretzel (Pretzel Palooza)
Fried Green Tomato Sandwich (Rosie's All American Cafe)
Fried Herb Garlic Cheese and Onions Rings (Tune In Lounge/50's Prime Time Cafe)
Grapefruit Cake (Hollywood Brown Derby)
Pretzel (Baseline)

If you are looking for a TS place I would go with Hollywood Brown Derby or Mama Melroses

The theming and old sci fi films at sci fi diner are good and entertaining for a while, but in my experience the food was average and in some cases poor and the films are on a loop so if your meal takes some time, you can end up watching the same clips over and over again. But if we all wanted the same things, Disney would be a pretty boring place and I’m sure there are many people who love it. We love Mama Melrose and it’s always a must do on our visits to HS. Some great stuff on the menu and the atmosphere is great, never had a bad experience and if you book it along with the fantasmic package ( not sure if this just a dining plan package)you get priority seating for the show.

The bakery on sunset boulevard does some great snacks depending on what you are into, but not advisable if you are heading towards the tower of terror!!!!!

Great tips y'all!
I think we will avoid mama Melrose. My family has an Italian restaurant that my grandfather opened when he came over from Italy. We generally don't eat out for Italian because it's not what we are used to lol.
I'm seriously tempted to cx the ADR and just do quick service and snacks and try and find dinner at a resort...that's what we generally do but I thought my mom would enjoy the nostalgia of the drive in feel. She seemed pretty excited about it but she also trusts me to make sure we have a good trip...so now I'm stuck wondering.

If it was me I wouldn't cancel the Sci Fi. It's been a long time since I've been there and I haven't heard the best about the food. From what I gather it's a hit or miss but the atmosphere is pretty great. Your mom would love it plus it will be a nice place to sit down and rest your feet, it gets so hot in the fall. You could even just order drinks and appetizers if you wanted. I'd try the fried pickles!!

Also, for my family, Fantasmic is a must at the end of the night. I love it!!

So I heard that the fireworks were better than fantasmic? Are the fireworks part of the star wars show? Would a 4 and 7 yr old enjoy one more than the other? I think we will wait until TSL opens and see what it's like before I do any changing to our day or really making any plans. I've come to the realization that HS is mostly shows when you have little ones so I'm going to YouTube them to see what's what with those.

I'm not the best person to ask regarding the fireworks, I'm sure someone else on here would know better but yes they are part of the StarWars show. I wasn't overly impressed but no one in my family is into Star Wars. Last time I saw it, it had some projections on the Chinese Theatre, some fireworks, and a few flame blasts that were crazy. Since then I'm sure it's changed. That was 2 years ago.

My kids at 4 and 7 would've preferred Fantasmic. It's more of a story with characters, music and water projections. Just don't sit to close up front if you go, you'll get a little wet.

If you have never been to HS, I would strongly recommend the Sci-fi drive in theatre! It's a lot of fun for the kids (and adults) to sit in cars and eat in a dim atmosphere of a drive in theatre. The movies are hilarious! I actually went to the movies to see some of them when I was a kid! We always eat at Sci fi when we go to HS. The food has always been good, especially the milkshakes:)
I wouldn't skip it if you have never tried it! As far as QS, the Commissary is really good. It used to get a bad rap, but they upped their menu and we have had good meals there also.

Try and find the Citizens of Hollywood. I think the "show" times are listed on the daily guide.

They are so much fun and interactive, you can even win cool prizes if you stick around. We've seen them on Sunset Blvd and also over by the Muppets. DH won a DHS key ring, DS got a couple of pins. And I got a telling off for laughing in the middle of a "take".

I'd love to see the Blues Brothers back, but I think they got axed when SOA was closed. :(

If you opt to do CS in DHS I would suggest trying the restaurants and Sunset Market. You get a variety of options from different counters much like the set up found in Value resorts cafeterias so if one person wants a Burger and another Tacos you can pretty much sate all appetites.

On the other hand if you want to take a break from the park and seek out other and in many cases better options I suggest that you take a short boat ride (or walk) over the the Crescent Lake resorts where you can find a bunch of CS and TS options.

What's a Whoopie pie??

Its a pie made by everyone's favorite actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg ;)

JK! A Whoopie Pie is a large cookie made out of two soft cake cookies with frosting in the center. Its like a cupcake sandwich just a little more dense.

Like an oatmeal cream pie that little Debbie makes?

No its more cakey than one of those and though chocolate is probably the most known they can come in any combination of flavors. The Carrot Cake Cookie from Sweet Spells is very much a whoopie pie. Here's a picture:
