I'm bored and curious so...

What are your top 3 favorite Disney/Pixar movies and why?

Mine in order:

1. The Little Mermaid- first movie I ever saw in the theater. Still one of my favorite movies ever, if not THE favorite. My Disney love started right then. Ariel is still my favorite princess. I love me some Little Mermaid!

2. Finding Nemo- I was raised by a single mom and had a physical disability. I lost my mom at a young age and bonded with my dad through the grief. This movie always makes me cry and laugh too. I'm not a boy, but that child/father bond always gets to me and it's an amazing journey for anyone of any age but especially for a young clown fish.

3. The Lion King- Again I completely identify with losing a parent at a young age. And I'm not afraid to admit I had the biggest crush on "JTT" back in the day.lol. Plus the songs are great and super fun.

This thread will mostly like get moved to one of the forum's more cinematic departments, but here we go:

1. Up. Very unorthodox film that comments on what it means to be living, in a deeply moving way. It featured much more heavily stylized design than we were used to seeing from CGI, with a rich colorful palette and interesting geometry. Its "surprise" villain based on Howard Hughes, war-plane and airship action scenes, and genuinely funny comedy also push it over the top. The score by Michael Giacchino is also one of Pixar's best.

2. Tarzan. In my opinion, Disney's most cinematic movie, with brisk pace, intense action, and brilliant cinematography (watch the scene where Tarzan's family is working under the moon, which becomes a jaguar's left eye, after which his right eye is revealed, which becomes the sun shining down on Kerchak's family. BRILLIANT foreshadowing). It was amazing seeing Disney's "deep canvas" technology being put to use to create the deeply layered jungle environment; just watching the way branches moved in the wind, or how the camera could swivel around Tarzan's movements in the jungle, just takes your breath away. Beautiful film.

3. Mulan. The first of Disney's movies to really attempt to take the female-centered movies in a different direction. Whereas many of Disney's movies feature female characters seeking to better their lives throughout the film, Mulan focuses on the character's selfless attempts to save someone in her family. Unlike Tarzan's artistic focus on layering, depth, and density, Mulan's artistic direction utilized watercolor-esque backrounds, rich linework, and generally a more "flat," painterly approach, which was really nice and felt very authentic to the subject matter. Some of the best scene design Disney has ever done, and GREAT music.

Beauty and The Beast - Putting aside the amazing art and music in this film, I have huge nostalic memories on thisone. This was the first movie I ever took my daughter to a theatre to see. She was totally focused on The Little Mermaid at the time and was very familiar with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. I explained to her that this was a new princess. She was three at the time and not heavy enough to keep the seat down. So we stood her in the seat and put my purse next to her to keep it the seat from raising up. During the ballroom scene she slid her chubby little arm around my next and said "Mommy I like Belle the best because her hair is the same color as mine". I now cry at the scene because she is 23 and still loves Belle!

Lion King - Putting aside the amazing art and music in this film, I have huge nostalic memories on this one also! This was my sons favorite. He was and is still very close to his Dad. When his Dad came back from yet another tour to Saudia Arabia his first night home we watched this as a family. My son was 3 and cried because Mufasa died. I think it hit home a little to close with his Dad being a soldier. My son is now married and in the military. Last September before he left for bootcamp we took a family trip to Disney. We watched The Lion King at the AMC at DTD. My son said it was the best part of the trip. He is now eagerly waiting for his first child to be born in January. We are hoping for a little Simba :)

The Gnome - Mobile - This was my favorite as a little girl. My Dad took me to see it 3 times at the matinee. My sisters didn't get why I liked it so much. I just loved the idea of the Gnomes and wished I could be Violet.

I'll be the first to say: I don't really care for the Pixar Films...never really liked any of them. I work in animation so it's not that I dislike the style, just don't particularly care for the films.

Mine are:
Little Mermaid (first VHS my parents bought me!)
Alice in Wonderland (all the colors, the songs. Loved it all)
Dumbo (but once I watched it with my infant son, I about lost it. SO much of the sadness in that movie goes over kids heads!)

These lists are usually predictable, but there's always a nice surprise, like this one. I have GM on DVD and I agree it's a wonderful fantasy.

1. Mulan

2. Toy Story

3. Monsters Inc

If I could pick a fourth, it would be a tie between Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast :)

I'm going to show my age. Here it goes,
101 Dalmations- great art, great story, great villain, and one awesome song.

Jungle Book- Disney classic, great songs, great characters, and another great villain.

The Black Cauldron- darker side of Disney animation, love the villain, like it's uniqueness in the pantheon of Disney animation.

Pixar? I love Finding Nemo and Up. I like all of them, but those two I guess are my favorites. And the Incredibles.

1) Toy Story 1,2, and 3- The ending of Toy Story 3 is a tearjerker but I love those movies.

2)Don't know if these can be considered movies but the old Disney sing along songs with the kids always made me happy and feel like I was in the parks.

3) The Little Mermaid- Great story with some good songs as well.

1. Pinocchio - In terms of animation alone, probably the most accomplished in the Disney animated canon. Pinocchio also features some wonderful songs that have more than stood the test of time, with "When You Wish Upon a Star" becoming a legitimate Disney Co. icon, and Jiminy Cricket appearing as a ubiquitous host over the years. The story also includes many moments of real suspense and darker elements that would be largely unthinkable in a modern-day Disney animated movie.

2. Mulan - One of the most underrated movies in the canon. Mulan isn't just Disney's most fully-developed female character; she's probably Disney's most fully-developed character, period. It's not just that Mulan is brave, resourceful, and loyal; her actions and decisions in the movie actually have significant, far-reaching consequences beyond herself and the individuals in her circle. Far from saving a single individual with the redemptive power of love, she literally saves an entire country with her actions. The songs are catchy, too.

3. Mary Poppins - Top-notch writing, acting, and music. Nearly every single song from the Sherman Brothers is a gem; Julie Andrews's acting won her a Best Actress Oscar (her only such award). The special effects hold up pretty well even today -- in 1964, they must have been absolutely mind-blowing. And, like Pinocchio and Mulan, Mary Poppins is surprisingly funny -- it features a number of jokes that are as amusing now as they were nearly fifty years ago.
