Favorite Building

The one with the dwarves is the Team Disney building in California. It was done by Graves, who also did the Swans and Dolphin. Yeah, I love that building, but I have never seen it in person.

The Florida Team Disney building is Isozaki building with the big cone thing that kind of looks like a Disney version of a nuclear power plant. It's a really modern building - you have to be in to that stuff to like it.

Stern did the Casting center at WDW - it has the diagonal checker-grid on it. I don't care for that one myself. He does some modern stuff, but a lot of his work is recreations of shingle styles - he did both the Yacht and Beach club. He actually served on Disney's board for a while - is he still on it? Eisner is an architectural fan and brought him on board.

Oh, I forgot the Fire station by Boardwalk! That was done by Venturi. Actually, as much as some critics hate the architecture down there, there sure is a lot of noteable buildings.

I wasn't saying Wuctha gunna do as a taunt, I wouldn't do that, I meant it as a O well Wuctha gunna do, like meh o well, not a taunt or insult

I think Space Mountain is great. My favorite has got to be Cinderella's Castle. Although, the great thing about EPCOT is the World Showcase and all the detail in the different country's buildings. It is fascinating to stand there and just look at all the great detail.

I hang around with too many architects, I guess. Bad thing, that. When i think of architecture I tend to think of a whole building - the massing and shape - gads! I have got to get out more!

I tend to look at places like World Showcase and much of the Magic Kingdom as set design, and really get into things such as perspective, the amount of detail (helps with the perspecitve), and angles and all that. Totally amazing when you start looking at it that way. You notice the wierd angles you would never consider (particularly horizontal angles) work so great.

Has Disney done any cool non-gate buildings lately? They were cranking them out for a while, but then stopped. Maybe there is a fire house or small sub-building somewhere I don't know about.

I can't believe nobody has said Mission: SPACE. I think that building is quite remarkable. But, as it usually is with me, that's based entirely on appearance.

As for symbolism, Spaceship Earth all the way. Without the hand and wand of course.

And for overall theming, Tower of Terror, and it's surrounding areas.

Outside of the parks, I would have to say the Firestation Near Downtown Disney. Something about that grabbed me everytime i went by. Whether it was the giant hose or the brightly lit "RCFD" letters, I dont' know. But there was definitely something about it that made me like it.

Funny you should mention that one. Again, having lots of discussion about it before hand, I finally got to see it in person this fall. I was a bit let down, actually. Not that I didn't think it had great shape and stuff- I love the sense of motion and the curves inside the sweep of the pinnacle. But the details and the lighting were complete let downs. It was pretty obviously cost cutting, too (mostly materials and technique), and I can't say that I would have not done the same - better the money into the ride than the building. It also did not feel terribly inviting to me.

I guess it is not bad at all, I just had overinflated dreams of what it could be..
