My fiance and I are hoping to take our 4 children to WDW in June of 2009. I have just begun to research and try to find trips, ticket costs and all of that. Where do I look for deals? Best places to stay? Do I fly or drive from Ohio? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

You've come to a good place to start. Are you planning to stay on Disney property, or would you prefer something else?

we were told by my coworker who went in october to stay at the all star resorts... the music one seems to be one that has enough room for us.. which would be better on or off property?

As for driving or flying that's up to you. We are driving from SW PA in Oct. We just prefer to drive.

I've read on these forums that the All Star Suites at All Star Music are really nice. There are also cabins at Ft Wilderness that would sleep 6. You are limited in resorts if you don't want to have 2 rooms.

I'm sure that others would have more advice for you. I'm in no way an expert. I just read alot on here.

how old are your children? if you stay on property you would need 2 rooms, they can only hold 4/5 people max. the all star music family suite might be a good alternative also.

Yes, they have suites there that would accomodate you all.
I'd suggest that you talk to any of our Kingdom Konsultants travel agents here. They have the most up-to-date info, are able to give you the best deals, at no charge to you.

Welcome to WDWMagic! Since you are just starting, I would recommend you pick up a copy of The Unofficial Guide to WDW by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa. I used that book extensively when I planned our first trip to WDW with our three sons. It rates attractions and resorts, and contains an unbelievable amount of trip planning help. Highly, highly recommended.

As for looking for deals, the best place to go is the forum sponsors - Kingdom Konsultants. They will know all the specifics of what is available. If you're going in June, I think the 4+3 promotion from Disney will still be in effect (stay 4 nights, get 3 free).

As for flying or driving from Ohio, I guess it depends on the time you have and your tolerance levels. Personally, we've always flown from Chicago.

Have fun!

I second this. Kingdom Konsultants are really good. I'm very happy with all the help Elizabeth has been on booking our next trip in Oct.

I would fly, never going to drive to Florida again, live in southern Ohio. Just to long of a trip, especially if you have only a week to enjoy WDW. There is always construction on I-75 so it can be a 2 day trip in the car one way. Or a 2 hour flight that can be fun. Might cost a little more but a lot less stress on you and the kids.

which would be better on or off property?

Ah, yes. The "big" question. If you are budget minded, then you will get more value off site. If you want a "magical" experience(that word is thrown around a lot when discussing staying on site), then on-site would be better where you are immersed in Disney 24/7.

What I mean is that I am able to stay off site in a 1 bedroom suite at a Courtyard by Marriott for under $100 a night using the Entertainment Book discount. The suite has 2 double beds and a pull out sofa bed. They do offer bus service to the parks, but it isn't as frequent as Disney on-site transportation. So the give and take is save money, lose "magic" and a less flexible transportation schedule. I always rent a car, so the transportation isn't a factor for me. And "magic" is over-rated. I get enough of that in the parks. It's nice to get away from it for a while. Even if I factor in the $12 daily parking at the park, I still make out much better.

On-site, you get all the "magic" you want, the use of the Disney Magical Express transportation from and to the airport, use of Disney transportation to the parks and Downtown Disney. Great theming. But you are kind of "stuck" there if you don't have a car. And it will cost more than staying off-site.

As for the fly or drive...I am from the Chicago area and made the drive down once. It was a 2 day drive each way so I had 1 hotel stay on the way down and 1 on the way back. Then the cost of fuel and wear and tear on my car and 2 days of my time Versus spend more, but it is a 2 hour flight and I am there. For me(a family of 4), a no-brainer to fly. Just makes the most sense. Since you would need 6 airfares, that may sway you to drive.

As for places to save...mousesavers.com lists out many deals. And if you do fly and want to rent a car, then they have great car rental discount codes. As stated, the Entertainment book for off-site hotel discounts.

If you do decide to stay on-site, use Kingdom Konsultants. I have only heard good things.

I also should mention the Disney Credit Card. You get Disney points for money you would spend anyways. Those turn into Disney Dollars that you can use just like cash in the parks. You also get a special character meet and greet at Epcot.

The travel section of your nearest Barnes and Noble is a great place to start. The Unofficial Guide is fantastic with tour plans in it for almost any situation, on and off-site lodging, airport, dining info., etc. Since they aren't affiliated with Disney it is a pretty objective book concerning all things Disney.....if I wrote it it would be very Disney-Dazzaled Subjective! If there is an Allegiant Airlines near you they sometimes have exceptional rates to Orlando, even if you do fly into Sanford instead of Orlando International.

the kids are 2 boys 9 and 7 the girls are 6 and 4

Those are great ages!

My wife and I simply could not wait to take our kids when they were barely 2 years old, so they are certainly spoiled by the experience by now. I would love to see what it's like for older kids to experience the parks for the first time.

Have fun, don't stress out, have fun have fun have fun.

For me it's a no brainer to fly instead of driving. Hate driving long distances, hate traffic, hate people that can't drive - so it's flying for me and you get there quicker. I don't mind staying on property and getting "stuck" there cause that's what I came down to WDW to do anyway is hang out at disneyworld. Right? I like being immersed in disney magic 24/7 while I'm there. We always stay on property. We stayed off property one time in October 2008 and it was terrible. Getting in the lots, paying $12 a day, then driving back to the hotel with the other people leaving and getting cut off by the other drivers. Not worth the hassle. I want to be able just to get on a bus and go where it goes and not have to worry - are we going the right way?

Well I'm From Massachusetts and have a Family of 5 and we have driven and Flown and found that driving is better. You save about $200 while driving both ways. But depending on if you have enough room in your car for 6 and if you have an 8 cylinder car and gas reaches $4.00 a gallon, it might be worth your while to fly. If you do fly, Stay on Disney Property!!!! this way you don't need to rent a car and you are fairly close to all theme parks.

If your looking for deals, The best places to stay are the all-star resorts and pop century. The price of a room is about $84 a night. Although, you will need two rooms. They are both very kid friendly. my younger sisters were both around your kids ages last time they went(10 and 7) and they LOVED pop century we have also stayed at the boardwalk which cost more but i think the value resorts are a lot more fun for kids.

I believe the stay 4 nights get 3 free deal will still be going on then but i'm not 100% sure. also if it's anybody's birthday, you will get into the park free:)
