First, there certainly were crowds pre-fastpass. On a week long summer trip in the early 90s, I had to skip Splash Mountain because the posted wait time never dipped below 90 minutes. That was on three separate days at MK.
Second, with a little planning, FP is a Godsend. I always try to have a FP in my pocket for something. Of course, this assumes a willingness to plan, which does take away from the spontaneity many people cherish. I for one am a 'planner'. So I love FP.
I do feel bad when I walk past the people on the non-FP line (not bad enough to give up my FP). But obvioiusly I don't FP every attraction, so, at some point in the day, I am right there with them.
