FastPass Plus and park hopping

It's been 6 years since I've been to WDW so I'm trying to sort out all this new fast pass plus mechanics. My question is, if you make 3 advance fast pass reservations at one park and you use them and then move on to another park later in the day, can you make additional fast pass res at a kiosk in the second park? Thanks!

Yes. Once your first three are used, or expire, you can book a 4th at a kiosk. Once that one is used, or expires, you can book a 5th at a kiosk. And so on.

And someone will correct me, or confirm, but I THINK you can still be in the first park and book the 4th FP+ for another park. I've never done it, so maybe you do have to be in the park where the attraction is located.

I think that the 4th and all subsequent FP+'s can only be done at MK. I tried doing it at DAK this past trip and it wouldn't let me.

It also still won't let you do your initial 3 FP+'s at DAK, DHS or Epcot and then add additional ones later at MK.

So, they didn't allow you to park hop? Did you have hoppers? If not, it likely detected that and wouldn't let you book a remote 4th.

After you finish your initial 3 fastpasses, you can go to a kiosk at another park to get your 4th fastpass (It can be any park you just have to go to the kiosk IN that park). The fastpass kiosk only works for the park you're in. After you use your 4th, you can get a 5th, and so on...

That's what I thought.

One thing to add on to the above info:

If you want to make the 4th FP+, you must use at least *one* of your initial FP+ choices, and then either use or allow the other two to expire. If you simply go up to a kiosk and try to get a 4th FP+ without using any of the first three I believe it will make you clear the initial 3 and then make a whole new set of three.

We also learned the hard way that you can't include someone on your 4th FP+ who either hasn't used their first three or didn't make any to begin with... We had a local friend with an AP meet up with us late-afternoon. He hadn't made any FP+ choices for the day, and we'd already used our pre-booked ones. When we tried to make a 4th FP+ for something it wouldn't allow us to include him because he hadn't made/used an initial three.

This is exactly how it worked for us as well when we went in March.

Unfortunately, I found that most of the time, by the time you got to the second park, most of the worthwhile FastPasses were already taken (and I wasn't going to get a FastPass to skip the 5 minute line for Living with the Land just because the option was available). We did have some REALLY good success at Magic Kingdom one night scoring FastPasses to Jungle Cruise (which had a 45 min stand by at the time), Winnie the Pooh (which had a 30 minute stand by and my wife had never been on it), Haunted Mansion (which had a 30 minute stand by at the time) and Space Mountain (which had a 60 minute stand-by at the time) all after having three reservations in the morning at Animal Kingdom.

Just be smart with your "extra" passes. You can only have one "extra" pass at a time and if you've used up your first three by lunch time, depending on your priorities, you may want to avoid booking a 4th for something that has a very late entry time (no matter how good an option) if a decently good option is available substantially sooner. Also, be careful you don't fall into the trap of waiting in long lines at the FastPass kiosk. If you wait 20 minutes at the kiosk (which does sometime happen) only to get a FastPass for a ride that only has a 20 minutes posted stand-by line, you really didn't save any time.

We would typically use the MDE app in advance to see wait times, narrow down our choice to two or three attractions that we wanted, look for a kiosk with little/no line (typically while on our way to another attraction), then select passes based on which of our choices were available and which had the soonest window.

There is certainly some strategy/science involved in optimizing the FastPass system, but we found we could really make it work to our favor if we were willing to be flexible.

Hopefully, Disney will allow you to add your 4th pass via the MDE app in the future (if they don't already)... that would really save a lot of time/hassle...

FP kiosks can ONLY make 4th FP selections for the park they're in; if you want a 4th FP in another park, you have to hop to the destination park first, and only then can you make your 4th FP.

We've found the best strategy to be to book the 3 fast passes at the second park. Then just do standby at the first one early in the day when crowds are still low.

Mabe the reason you had issues has already been discussed, but this is just not true. Here's a screenshots of FPs for my last trip:

We used our original 3 at DAK, then hopped over to MK and had no problem getting subsequent ones at the kiosks. We did find it was easier to just pick a random FP at the kiosk and modify it via the app, since it works much faster.
