FastPass+ Most Certainly Not Coming Back As It Was

It seems like its essentially forcing what they wanted FP to be originally. You're not standing in any line because you're not allowed so you're going to shop and eat?
Sure that may work for first timers but not for multi time visitors and I'd be willing to bet there are more multi timers than first times at the parks on any given day.
I for one no longer buy many souvenirs and often times when I buy park merch its on ShopDisney not in the parks.
Sure I'll wander around for a/c purposes but that's about it.
They're testing a virtual queue on Hagrids in IoA. I'm not impressed by the reports I'm seeing. Rather than shopping and eating, people are hanging out in the area, camping out in any available spot waiting for their turn to come up.

I don't think Disney or Universal has enough extra space (in shops, restaurants or even just in general) for very many attractions to go virtual.

I'm still not convinced "Stand-by pass" isn't just covid related in queues that are still spacing people out unlike WDW where they have been removed..
Not sure about DLP but many queues in recent years have not been built to handle standby capacity. a 3 hr line when FP+ is in service is drastically less people than a 3 hr line without FP+ active. They have to do something with the excess standby if they restrict fastpasses by a large margin, and obviously would want to differentiate it from the paid fastpasses.

They absolutely don't. None of the parks were designed or have the space (with the possible exception of EPCOT) to have the entire day's attendance in shops/restaurants/pathways; they were expected to have thousands of people waiting in queues at all times.

You could do all virtual queues if you built/designed a park from scratch -- it would just need to be larger and have far more restaurants and shops.

And there’s the issue. Disney has created their own problem by not doing much over the last 10 or so years to expand in all parks. That includes adding (not just replacing) rides and especially large people eater shows. Now with some still closed from covid it’s going to be even worse but they don’t seem very focused on the guest experience anymore and are blinded by dollar signs

my concern is the problem they have created they are about to make worse and they don’t even realize it (or worst of all, even care)

Also, there are only so many times a person can eat in a day at the park. If you already planned on eating lunch, dinner, and a snack while there, having to find a way to kill 90 minutes isn't going to make someone more likely to eat even more. Maybe guests would be more likely to shop during that time, but when additional vacation funds are being pulled away by paying for FastPasses then many guests will be less likely to buy additional souvenirs and may even buy less than they would have otherwise - and that's before accounting for the fact that the shops can only accommodate a certain number of people at a time. Trying to cram into an already crowded gift shop in hopes that you'll be able to navigate through the sea of people, find something you want to buy, and then navigate through the sea of people again to get to a cash register isn't anyone's ideal shopping experience. Depending on the park, I might even just head back to my room and go back later when wait times will hopefully be lower. If I drove, Magic Kingdom might be the only exception since getting to and from the TTC is kind of a pain compared to just parking and walking in at the other parks - but there's no doubt that I'd walk back to my room if staying at Bay Lake.

Plus, now that all the shops sell basically the same merchandise (with a few exceptions) it's not that easy to spend time shopping either. If you've already been to World of Disney you're not going to find much different in the parks.

This part hurts every time I see the shops...especially at MK.

I remember exploring every post-attraction shop because there'd be some cool Pirate themed keychain only available at Pirates of the Caribbean (for example), so there was that sense of connection and buying something that evoked a ride, which makes for a great souvenir.

Just to stay on semi-topic, the original goal of Fastpass freeing people to shop is definitely pointless when you can do all of your shopping at Disney Springs and not waste park time.

They keep doing things that are essentially cross-purpose. Homogenize all the merchandise to save costs, but then make moves to try to get people to spend more time shopping.

It was almost 20 years. WDW had very few new rides built from about 1995 to 2015. Especially EXPANDED capacity rides. Yet they built tons of hotels, and attendance went up about 30%.

Tron is the first E ticket expansion to Magic Kingdom since Splash Mountain (1992!!). And even it is more a D ticket. That's THIRTY years between E tickets for highest attended theme park in the world.

Yeah, there is a crowd problem.

I can’t believe I’m saying this…but Disney needs a 5th park. Will it cost more. Yes. Will Disney make more. Probably. Will Disney guests spread out more and have a better experience. Likely

If Disney's goal is to keep people out of lines and into virtual lines so they can shop, snack, eat, whatever, they already have the perfect model, they just need to expand it.

Dumbo the flying elephant has a large indoor playground that kids can play around in while adults can sit and relax while waiting for their turn to jump back into the short line and board the ride.

Imagine a much larger version of this for the E-tickets that have space near them to connect an area. Put inside it comfy chairs with phone chargers, maybe a mini-movie theater showing related Disney shorts, a playground, a gift shop, bathrooms and a snack cart. Have it hold an hours worth of people for the attraction. Make it clear you will be in here for about an hour and give each party a buzzer to return once it's their time to ride (with under a 10 minute wait)

It accomplishes a few goals:
-Guests are happier not physically standing in a long line
-Guests are unable to be in 2 lines at once
-Guests will spend more at the giftshop/snack cart since they can't really go anywhere
-Paid Fastpass can still skip this area (or get you out of this area quicker)
