I think you should borrow Things That Fall from the Sky (a collection of short stories) by Kevin Brockmeier. I just picked up a second-hand copy somewhere and loved it. I wasn't really expecting anything, but it's so worth it.

I hope so. The Platinum edition came out in 2003ish, but we didn't get it at the time.
