Face meet and greet characters

I love the fur characters as much as the next person (aka everyone, pretty much), but Smee and Captain Hook as face characters... Just..just no. In Disneyland Paris, Smee is a face character during shows (lot less creepy than the picture that was on here..), but he's so much better as fuzzy.

I can see why some of the Disney villains are fuzzies, like Jafar (his face is too long for a normal person..), Frollo (too creepy is he was a face o_O, and the Queen of Hearts would be too weird as a face (c'mon, who'd want to see her as a face?)
But Cruella, Facilier, etc, are much better fitted to be face. Just some characters don't work both ways. :P
(btw, I was looking through an old photo album of my moms from when she first went to WDW two years after it opened..the Mad Hatter looked creepy as a fur character  )

From the DL videos I have seen, sometimes Alice and Hatter do get mobbed by guests. They have ALOT of fangirls that follow them all around the parks. From what I've seen on the videos, when they do get mobbed, Alice and Hatter play games and tell stories.

I watch too many of those videos.....

Nope I watch the same amount my friend lol Its fun to look at them when you are bored! But that offers a special sort of interaction that is spontaneous and extremely memorable and of course the best part not scripted. It feels all the more real.

Speaking of which, I recall once seeing the three good fairies from Sleeping Beauty as fur characters at one time in a video or photo but I did see a video where they were face characters on YouTube in Disneyland in CA and I preferred the face ones nevertheless. It seems like there's not too many villains out there that are face characters. Other than Maleficent, the Tremaines, the Evil Queen from Snow White, Gaston and Cruella de Vil, the rest of the villains are fur. (Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong. Just do it politely!) I can't really think of any reasons why but I do agree that there probably are certain features of that character that no matter how much makeup or add-ons you add, it doesn't replicate the characters very well. I can only dream of having Quasimodo as a face character meeting and greeting guests in a Disney park one day but he has too many features that would be hard to replicate on a human being hence why he's a fur from all the photos and videos I've seen.

I don't think they did a bad job at all with him here! Taken from the old stage show at hollywood studios, the materials for hook and smee used in the show is not meant to be seen in direct light. But obviously they have the materials to do it right. besides I have seen great cosplayers as captain hook and children would still identify him just as easily besides the hook for a hand helps a lot too!

They could give hook a prosthetic nose just like they do for the hatter, same with smee.

I think all humanoid characters should be face characters. They're made even entered when not confined to a factory system like at Walt Disney World.

For once I completely agree with you, a lot of arguments on here are that they couldn't work as face but many of the characters like mad hatter shouldn't work as a face character (he is supposed to be much smaller than you, his facial features are very elongated much like many of the villains listed in this forum who are fur), yet he does.

Being a grown adult without kids who still likes to meet the characters (I know I'm not the only one...) I kind of prefer the full costume characters as opposed to "face" characters. I feel like it's easier to get lost in the magic rather than being reminded that it is someone's job and they are probably judging me and wondering why a grown adult and his wife have just waited in line for 30 minutes to get their picture with some random employees dressed liked Flynn Rider and Rapunzel.

The people in the suits are thinking that too ;) lol Nah I'm sure they are used to it so don't care.

Personally, I prefer characters like Captain Hook & Smee as "fur" characters. I think their respective head pieces look more like the characters they're portraying than any face character make up and add ons can really accomplish. As for Fairy Godmother and Hatter in Tokyo Disney, I thought that was done b/c the bulk of the cast members would be of Japanese backgrounds and not look enough like the characters to make face characters like these possible in that park. Sorry, but I find her pretty terrifying...

th
Sorry, wasnt clear, the Hatter is face universally, no more Scary Hatter.

I believe the Tremaines may still be fur in Tokyo, I think theyre only in the Christmas parade.

As someone else pointed out, 3 good Fairies are a mixed bag, DL has face, WDW has fur, DLP has both. Not sure about Asia.

The Old Hag/Witch is another one, shes face in Paris, Fur everywhere else I think.

I think with a lot of it, its who you grew up with. I dont like the face Hook and Smee at all, but thats me.

Personally I like Hook and Smee as "fur" characters. They just look weird as face characters in Dream Along With Mickey. Also, the Fairy Godmother "fur" character looks really creepy. I'd be afraid to meet with her.

See, I grew up with the fur FG so I dont think that, its generational. Kind of like the MSEP vs Spectro debate.

Just because its been done poorly doesn't mean it can't be improved.

The reason Hook and Smee were made into face characters was so they fit in with the articulated characters who talk and their eyes blink. It would be a bit uneven if those two characters had "fur" heads when the VIP characters talk during the show. There were never plans to make Hook or Smee's M&G characters face characters, just like it isn't logistical to put articulated VIPs in M&Gs, save for talking Mickey, still in the testing/adjusting phase.
