Expedition Everst: Instant Classic or Time Will Tell?

Make sure you also put down Tower of Terror as "not a classic".

Short drop ride with tons of busted effects?

Not a classic.
:brick:

TOT has always been my favorite ride since I was a little kid, still is. I am not at all trying to contradict what you said, but on the flip side, am very curious to know what some of the busted effects are, to try and see if I remember any of them. Call me a moron, because I can't think of any, and I've been riding it for years. Maybe I've just glossed over them for sentimental reasons...

Seriously though, I am curious. I like reading about that kinda stuff...

Did you know there's a spark machine in the Hollywood Tower Hotel sign? Long gone, but I'm sure it looked great. There was also a fog in the boiler room, as well as water spickets that dripped water down on to the floor. Combine that with the turned-off eye camera, add in the door on strings and other cheezy Fifth Dimension effects, and Tower of Terror is in the same boat as Expedition Everest. It's just that Everest is new, therefore not good enough. They're both amazing, but since I'm a Disney fan I just can't in all good faith enjoy them. Also, down with screen-based attractions, and more orginal EPCOT Center attractions that have tons of screens!

I definitely knew about the eye thing. And I vaguely remember hearing about sparks from the sign (I can only imagine how cool that would've looked.) I didn't know about the fog and water in the boiler room. I first rode it about 2 years after it opened. Either the effects stopped by then or I was too little to remember. I wonder what else there was when it first opened?

If Everest never turned the mist back on at the top of the mountain, that would not degrade from it becoming a classic attraction. I just feel that Everest is too new to be a "classic" without earning the title (TOT did). If it holds up and is still loved maybe 10 of 15 years from now, sure.

I think the Yeti is too big a piece of the attraction not working. Missing sparks or mist is one thing, but the Yeti is a MAJOR point of everest.

Yeti's... not... working????? :( That IS a crying shame.

But all the times I went on it I didn't even glimpse yeti for long enough to see him be animated, and I enjoyed the ride quite a bit. I'm not a coaster fanatic of any sorts, so I'm not qualified to say what quality coaster it actually IS but it felt like an awesome coaster to me.
What really amazes, though, is the theming. I don't think you'll find that anywhere else.
My icon tells you already, but here it is in words: classic.

i'm sorry, because this is obviously been discussed here before, but i've been away a while. what is going on with the yeti? from the tone of this thread, it sounds like he is totally out of commission when it comes to A mode. is this true? that is a shame. i rode it 4 times and he was in A mode every time.

also, what is the "camera eye" you're talking about in regards to tower of terror?

thanks!

I think EE is better than Thunder Mountain, no question. The only part of it that is completely underwhelming is the beginning section before the main lift, which is pointless and adds nothing. I do think it is an instant classic, but on all 3 times I have ridden it...it was in A mode. I have yet to see B mode. Without the moving Yeti, it's not really living up to its potential. As a ride, it is a perfect Disney coaster. I is easily thrilling enough for the vast majority of people that visit WDW. I'm sure WDW knows that coaster junkies mostly choose IOA or Six Flags over WDW to begin with, so why put in a white-knuckle thrill ride? EE can be enjoyed by amost everyone.

A couple of different theories as to whats going on with Mr. Yeti. Everything from a broken foundation to a broken back. Take a look here:

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe they are referring to the eye in the fifth dimension room. It originally showed the image of the elevator you were actually sitting in as you passed by. Some people realized they could make certain obscene gestures and they would show up on the eye. As a result, the camera was turned off. The eye now shows a picture of a previously filmed elevator passing by.

Backstory, setting and theme are where it's at. As it is, the attraction suffers from trying to squeeze in a story line.

25 years after Big Thunder, WDW has build a mountain coaster that is less good than Big Thunder. And second best does not make a classic to me.

I have been on Big Thunder 3 or 4 times... What back story does it have that the average rider is supposed to absorb. It is a fun roller coaster with nice theming yet I have never absorbed any story from it. EE's cue pounds you with story, setting up the anticipation of what you are about to experience.

Regardless, most backstory on any ride is totally missed by the average guest. Backstory is more for WDI to keep a consistent look and energize the designers and builders and results in something for Disneyphiles to research to death. The backstory creates all the cool stuff for the average visitor to look at and go "oooh!" while they wait 30-60 minutes to ride. Note I said "look at", and not "absorb the story".

However, I do see BTM as a classic Disney attraction yet let us treat classic as a noun and not an adjective.
