Ever get a scare just before your trip is to happen?

I have had poison ivy on trips to WDW (many times), Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands.

I get poison ivy just by looking at it sideways and I get it almost every year, multiple times. (I do a lot of work in my yard, plus I like to hike, and I think my dog likes rolling in it)

The only thing that helps are steroids. I have tried all of the creams, lotions, quack cures, etc. The only thing that works for me is prednisone.

I have made emergency appointments with dermatologist the day before a flight to WDW. I have had my dermatologist call in a prednisone script to a delivery pharmacy while AT WDW.

Starting a week or so before any trip we have planned, if my wife sees me scratching myself, her first reaction is "you don't have poison ivy do you?"

A few years ago I was planning a driving trip from Dallas to Orlando. About a week before the trip my transmission in my Ford Aerostar mini-van blew up. I got it fixed in time to still make the trip - that's what credit cards are for!

Fortunately, the only ones I recall were foot injuries.

More than once, someone in my family has tripped, badly, the day before a trip.

One time, the day before a WDW trip, I cut open my foot near my Achilles tendon, right where the back of my two pairs of shoes hit the back of my foot.
I backed into a gate door, because a dog was bounding towards me. Me hitting the gate caused the metal latch to fall, and it scraped the side of my ankle.

Thanks to Disney forum members, that is when I discovered moleskin! I haven't had much cause to use it since, but it was amazing on that trip!

How about a cancer diagnosis? My husband was diagnosed recently, This upcoming trip will be our last one.. 😭
So sorry to hear. I will be praying for you and your family. Hope you can and will be able to get enjoyment out of your time at WDW together and make it without any problems. Such a difficult time to be facing the coming days.

I was also in that predicament years ago but somehow as I got older I was able to find some tolerance and now it doesnt hit me as bad.

This was sort of a scare. In 2010 we were having a particularly cold winter. It was on a Friday in mid December and I was to leave for WDW the next day. I woke up freezing. Our furnace wouldn't come on. I called the HVAC people and they said I needed a part that they would have to order. It may take up to a week to get. My husband was in the bedroom barley able to get out of bed for food and poo, yeah, don't judge me, he was an abusive alcoholic and deserved it. Anyway, the technician said he would try to at least get it on but couldn't guarantee it would come back on after it cycled off. While he was working on it I went in to my husband and told him I was still going to WDW and if the heat wouldn't come back on it was cold enough to preserve his body until I got home. Even he laughed.
You and so many others like you have my sympathies. I had an uncle that was a life long alcoholic that abused my aunt and 2 cousins. Our family tried to assist her and get him help but they refused our intervening. It went on for years until my aunt finally got the courage to leave. ( He was found one morning by a family member checking on him, he died alone in his bed )

Yikes... Once I discovered a screw in my tire the morning we were to leave and had to call 3 places to find one that would pull the screw and plug the tire. Ended up delaying our leaving by 6 hours.

The more frequently you get it, the more sensitive you become. It's when you don't get it that the reaction strength diminishes

The rash is actually a T cell-mediated immune response. I have two things working against me
- My immune system kicks rear - I rarely get sick and when I do it is usually very mild symptoms.
- If I had to guess, I would say I have had poison ivy over 70 times, so I have plenty of T cells just waiting to identify it as a threat.

I touch it and my immune system kick into high gear and all hell breaks loose. Man I hate poison ivy.

I gotcha beat on that one, too! I was doing another drive from Dallas to Orlando a few years ago. I had a slow leak in a tire, so I topped it off before hitting a hotel for the night, about halfway through my trip. Next morning the tire was totally flat, and my jack was screwed up. Good thing I had AAA. About an hour of waiting followed by a professional tire change and I was good to go. Still scary to envision my vacation going up in smoke cuz I couldn't get there!

Not a Disney trip but on the morning of the day we were to depart for our trip to New Zealand, my brother learned that his card details had been compromised and so he had to cancel the card.

Fortunately, my card was fine and he had a pre-paid forex card so we didn't have too many difficulties. But it was still a bit of a panic/scare nonetheless.

I had to cancel my February 2020 trip two weeks before I was supposed to leave...I got hit by a car while riding my scooter home from work one night.
I remember you posting about that after it happened.

I was contemplating driving with the screw because the tire wasnt losing air but then thought about the consequences if it moved and started leaking. I could see me waking up with a flat at the mid point hotel in the predicament you found yourself in, or with a flat on the highway. .

Twice, I have had a hurricane threaten a September trip. The first time, it passed close but did not hit and thus everything was fine. The second time, we had to cancel the trip about three days away. I have had dental issues (crowns) that basically chewed up the trip money twice.

Thankfully, no other real scares. This year, I did worry about a snowstorm that was threatening the same day that we left but thankfully it warmed enough that it was just rain (no ice).

Mine was not a physical scare but more of a business owner scare. As most of you know, my wife and I owned a Residential Care Home. The regulations required coverage 24/7/365. Our clients were mentally ill, physically and mentally challenged and elderly. That meant that trips, especially road trips required very careful staffing to be sure that every single hour was covered with someone that could react to issues, emergency or otherwise. That required days of planning building up to departure time. This was before cell phones or car phones. Once on the road it was the point of no easy return. Anyway, We usually left about 5:30am drove 150 miles to Albany, NY than stop for breakfast before continuing on down the highway. It was 5:25am, the car was packed and all we were doing was running down the checklist to be sure we weren't forgetting anything and the phone rang.

No one calls us at 5:25am unless there is a problem. My heart practically stopped. It rang about four times and I picked up and all we heard was nothing. I waited a few seconds and hung up and said let's get the hell out of here. I never did find out who called at that hour but nothing was wrong anywhere that I checked and no one has ever said, Ha Ha, gotcha!

I once had really bad nausea that would come and go in waves the night before a trip. I decided to tough it out, so we got up at 3 a.m. and drove to the airport. While boarding the plane I got so nauseous that I had to turn around and go home. My doctor said it was viral and our travel insurance covered us, but later that year I learned I have Celiac Disease after many more (and more frequent) bouts of nausea (and worse).

My wife once had to go to the ER with an eye infection the night before a trip. Then the only nearby pharmacy that was still open that late was out of the prescription she got so the pharmacist had to call the doctor to approve a liquid form of the medication. We got home around 10 and had to be up at 3.

I am sorry to hear this. Dealing with that for a year is awful. We've had a sinus infection crop up one time and that was rough for my wife as she had to fly with it. Less than pleasant, to say the least.
