So what is your essential gear to have on every run? (besides your shoes...Saucony Omni 8 and Saucony Fastwitch 4 race flat just for the record)

1. Garmin Forerunner 305 - I like instant information and results. No guessing games with my trusty 305

2. Road I.D. - You never know...worst case scenario

3. Optic Nerve Shades (interchangeable lenses) - protect the eyes at all times

Really just my Mizuno's, Nike socks, one of my tech shirts and some Clear Desitin right at the top of my legs on the inside near the privates. :animwink:

1. I am purchasing a heart monitor this weekend. I think Im going to get the Polar RS100. Anyone else use this model?

2. I really need to purchase a road ID. It is on the list.

3. I dont know if I could wear sunnies while running. I think they would bother me too much. Although, to be fair, I have never tried it.

Well, to be honest, I run with a Garmin 305 as well.

Of coures I wear shoes (Saucony Ride 2's)

Body Glide is a wonderfull thing in the heat.

If it is really hot, I need a hat or sweatband, otherwise the sweat gets into my eyes.

Not much else is required. Proper clothes of course, but I don't have a single brand or style I go to.

I really wish I had the cash for this. But $110 is about the budget for the Polar RS100.

Body Glide... Ill have to try this too. I have always used clear desitin since they send us samples in the mail all the time and we use the regular desitin on my daughter.

The Polar is descent enough. I started out with that, until I got the 305...information coming out of my ears. I love it. But for a HRM, that Polar is spot on...go for it.

Cheers.

That is all I need, plus stopwatch and backlight. Was the chest strap transmitter manageable and/or comfortable?

I have two pair of shoes I switch between, SuperNova Glide and New Balance 769. I use an Ironman watch, but the battery is dying now. And I take a washcloth to wipe the sweat. Depending on the length of the run, water and gel/Powerbar is also required.

The HRM strap was actually pretty comfy. The one that comes with the Forerunner 305 I actually like better because it has a thinner profile. However, I stopped using the HRM on the 305 and just track my pace, distance, time, calorie burn, grade, elevation, etc...

But don't get me wrong, Polar has one of the most accurate HRM on the market and you can't go wrong with it. Def pick one up and you won't be sorry.

Let me know how you like it.

Yes, some sort of covering for the lower area might be necessary if one does not want to be hauled off to the local precinct!

I love my 305 and I never hit the road without it. How do you like/dislike yours?

I have to have my Garmin F60, along with a good hat. I shave my head, so all my sweat runs quickly into my eyes...if I wouldn't have a hat, I'd be blind by about mile 4.

On second thought, I ran into this watch while online and I wonder how the 2 compare? The FR60 Garmin and the Polar RS100.

Same price range. The Garmin comes with a few more interesting gadgets. I wonder how the accuracy of the heart rate monitor is. I would assume it is the same technology as the 205, 305 etc.

thoughts?

The FR 60 is good, but if you want to track your distance and speed you will have to buy the foot pod.

If you just want the HRM, I would go for the Poloar, but if you want your distance and such, I would just go for the Forerunner 305 instead of having to buy the foot pod with the FR60. You wont regret it. You get so much feedback from your runs.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know this. I was trying to do all the research.

Also, I would go ahead and but the 305 but I have a lot more to buy since I have run into a little extra cash. I think the Polar is perfect, then I have to get a 4 pod water belt and a few other things.

Thanks again.

*When the wife says, "If you are running this strong next Christmas, Ill get you that 305"... Im good.

No problem! But don't go crazy with the gear! (I know its addictive sometimes).

You really should be good with just a 2 bottle fuel belt. I usually don't go over 13-15 miles in one run and my 2 bottle helium fuel belt does the trick (even has a removeable pouch for keys and a gel).

Good luck with the gear and have fun.

Im frugal most of the time with things like this. I ran my first half early this year looking like Jed Clampett. On a Jed Clampett budget too (before finding the oil). :D

I love the 305. I am a big data freak so I love all the data it gives me.

I don't use it as much for race management. You can program a projected pace profile into it, and it will pace you during a race, but one, I am not that advanced a runner, and two, I don't like having to keep looking at my wrist (it sort of kills that zen thing). So I just set the watch to record auto splits, I set my target zones (pace, heart rate), but I don't look at them. I just run, and when I get back to the computer I see what zones I was in.

The ability to see elevation as well as distance, is to me a MAJOR difference between a GPS watch and a footpad watch.

I used to run with the heart rate strap. It's not uncomfortable at all, but recently I have stopped wearing it, I'm not really sure why.

I do have to put a new wrist band on it though, as the one that is on there is a bit small. It fits, but it's on the second to last hole, and the loose end keeps popping out.

Yeah I love mine too. I replaced the strap with an EK velcro sport strap...damn secure.

My main screen is pace, time and distance. I have the alert set to go off if I drop pace. second screen is best pace, avg pace, total distance and calorie burn. third screen is time, heading, sunrise and sunset...I don't use that screen much. I also have it set up to auto pause when I stop for an intersection, or traffic, etc...

Seeing all of the feedback from the runs in a graphical/visual medium is great. I can see where I was doing well, where I can do better etc...

Info junkie right here.

Too funny. All in all, we really just need shoes (not even if your a barefooter)...the gear is just fun!

Except the fuel belt...that's just smart to stay hydrated.

Have a great run tomorrow.
