EpcotServo's Sep. 13th UNIVERSAL Update: Not Disney

Well, if you come on by Mummy now, almost all of the effects have been working consistently for the past few months now. (exception: first Imhotep)

RoTM B-Mode vs. Yeti B-Mode
Imhotep operates 3 times more than the Yeti does and has twice as many movements, plus relies on a seperate effect (The Sarcophogus Door) to operate. At least he has a better B-Mode than a strobe. The B-Mode for the second Imhotep... well...I won't start on that (it sucks).

I'd rather have a projection than a closed ride. I'd rather have a strobe light than a closed ride. I'd rather have operating effects than Alternate Show, however.

(I challenge anyone to name all the effects at RotM, btw-- then we can talk about effects not working)

I'm sorry, but the face of doom is about 100 times worse than Yeti's B-Show. They are both bad, but least you get to see the Yeti, and it remains scary. I feel no threat, and only get to contain my laughter at the Reggie-torturing-Death-Face.

In June RotM was working so horribly that even the projection was missing, no fire in the treasure room, and only one side of fire at the false end.

It was also the only time my sister got to do it after I had told her all about how cool all the effects were. She never saw ANY of them work right.

Alright, let's see if it'll let me post this time (stupid new distro of linux...).

Anyways,

@EpcotServo:
I think I do have to agree with you about the strobe light vs. alternate show. I think we should make the distiction between B-Mode and alternate show. The yeti's still visible both times (and still plays with the story in a believable manner). I still hold by the fact that Imhotep is more complicated and works more often (but, what does that matter if he can't work consistently, I guess?)

@MatPez:
I find that I'm having a hard time believing that all those effects were out. The attraction would be closed if they were. And still, with what you described that's still less that 15% of the effects on that attraction. I've seen attractions elsewhere operate with more effects out.

@rant...
I wish it was understood that when something breaks down, it's not because it felt like it. Most rides, effects, and motion systems operate close to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days/year. Even with the few hours of maintence they can get a night, if you ran your car that long and with great preventitive maintence, it'll still break down.

:End Rant:

Ok... I am a fan of RotM and Universal. I have no reason to lie to you. Universal wouldn't close the attraction as long as the coaster was running (effects or not) in late June. I know many of the smaller effects were working... but really...
no Imhotep AA or projection, absolutely no fire effects in the treasure room, and only the back half (harder to see) fire effect working at the false end.
We still enjoyed the ride, but it was quite the letdown considering I knew it was my sisters only 2 days at Universal since 1992.
But remember, we still enjoyed it.

SO TRUE! The key to the issue is how long it isn't working. Forgot about the Yeti and the Mummy: My biggest effects gripe of all time was Haunted Mansion pre-refurb had one of the eye portrait's eyes not lit up. It was like that for nearly a year, and it KILLED ME because nobody did anything about it.

The only reason I have a hard time believing you is because if the first Imhotep and his alternate show, that's a pretty much given to close until one of the two are fixed. A thought just occured to me, though (literally, as I'm typing). So, maybe the alternate show was working. Maybe you just couldn't see it--there's a light that's pretty bright on the sarcophogus that, if left on, drowns out the projection. If that's the case, I totally believe you (although it still sucks).

Vehicle movement isn't the only thing that can cause downtimes--effects can, too. Having ridden RotM with the lights on, off, and with effects half working--the effects play a huge role in that attraction. Point: rides will and do close because of show effects.

problems of a dark ride + problems of a roller coaster = RotM = twice as many reasons for downtime.

That reminds me, I forgot to mention that on ROTM when I was there, the track table Maintenance Bay pit work lights at the end of the ride were on and you could see all the supports. All I could imagine was that they just put on/took off a car from the track. Is that possible?

Nah, those lights you're talkin about are motion sensored if someone wants to use that exit in our queue. That's an interesting area to be during operation. If you know who I am, next time you're there, I'll show ya if ya want.

That's neat. If I ever go back I might take that offer up!

This was a thread I missed cool update. I love Universal Orlando too. But not as much as Disney. I do have to say I went to HHN this year to see Bloody Mary and this was the best HHN ever. Great house's and the scare zones are at there best. I was thinking about Disney when I was at the event and thinking that Disney should do something like this at the studios for adults and teens. I bet it would be so cool. Well, thanks for the photos! Can't wait to see the Potter ride in action at IOA.

I just came back from a two-day trip to Universal for HHN and I am happy to report that Mummy was in perfect working order. Every effect that I'm aware of, including minor ones like the falling wall were working. The only thing I didn't notice was the water spray at the Scarab scene but I know sometimes it depends where you are sitting.

Yes, I was there Friday and do believe RotM was working almost 100%.

(I did have a car with a bad speaker that was distorting once)
