That's very subjective and a matter of taste...
Change UOE but not SSE, or the whole park (with some restricions) for that matter...don't think that's the solution...
 :animwink:

I once had to write a paper about change. So I decided to write about the positive side of change in Epcot. If Walt was around today we'd have EPCOT he dreamed of but in this case I think he'd want to make epcot a showcase of things to come and as the times change the attraction's technology should change. So WWWD (What Would Walt Do) he'd change the ride keep the theme.

That is a great point! Never looked at it that way!

Nope thats not it...its suppose to go out of the sphere and make a loop of somekind....

YEAH RIGHT!!!! Please that would look terrible (and will not happen in a million years...maybe for the next millenium celebration)......then again if we are going to talk about aesthetics....that darn "EPCOT" with the mickey hand reaching to the top of SSE looks very very tacky...if anything they should destroy that first...

I agree! Excellent!! UPDATE the ride in quality, but keep the essence. :) *(And by update, I don't mean cover up all the sets :p)

Spaceship Earth -- Right On!

I agree. The ride needs to be updated to show what the future of communicatios technology will bring, but it should still show the progression from past to present.

It needs to go beyond the cutting edge and make predictions like it did in the 80's -- most if not all of which have come true.

I believe that you've hit the target, Lovecraft. . . Spaceship Earth, in its impending update, should surely reestablish EPCOT's focus on idealistic, yet achievable, visions of the future. These visions, in the grand EPCOT tradition, should lie just beyond our reach; yet, with the messages of global understanding, cooperation, and enhanced awareness of the roots of human progress, guests would be inspired to carry these new ideals into their own life experiences. . . turning dreams into reality. Spaceship Earth, as the original EPCOT cast member guides state, should always exist as a "collective endeavor by people. . .for people, in the hope for a better world."

Take Horizons, for example. By focusing on idyllic home and work environments, Horizons illustrated a message that all of us still yearn to see in today's world. Yet the fictitious vistas presented were, and still are, actually quite achievable; according to show designer Tom Fitzgerald, "This is a vision of an achievable future. It's based on things we are already doing or are very close to doing." Fitzgerald has indicated that humankind has already advanced in robot labor, novel irrigation systems, and genetic engineering. . . yet the synthesis of all of these accomplishments would be the desert-farm habitat that has awed EPCOT guests for nearly twenty years.

We should certainly not criticize EPCOT for featuring state-of-the-art, acquirable technologies. . . many guests are unable to have contact with much of current technology, anyway. BUT we must ask ourselves why EPCOT no longer seems to be asking, "What's on the horizon?" What can we achieve by using our present-day inventions and ideas? Spaceship Earth focuses on how mankind has been asking these questions for eons. . . but the attraction should continue to pose these questions for today's guests. What do we have to aspire to? How can we bring about positive change? Spaceship Earth shows us who we are. . . but it must also hint at what we can become.

In the design of Horizons, innovative species of decorative plants were created by Imagineers. The "Omnisphere" presentation was first conceived. The design of the finale was always a WDI dream, but never until that time did it become reality. The largest miniatures ever built for film were featured in the final scenes. . . and they were so detailed, that two state-of-the-art, computer-controlled robots were programmed to move throughout the sets with pinpoint precision. The partnership with GE ensured that the message of Horizons was carried into the commercial market.
These Imagineers were not only show designers. . . they were visionaries in their own right. When confronted with the challenges of Horizons, designer Alex Taylor adopted a positive outlook: "In Horizons, we wanted to say that there's a whole realm of possibilities out there and that if we use our imagination and technical skills, we can do anything." The hydroponics system in the attraction narrator's Nova Cite home was built to actually work, yet it was only used for "show". . . that is the type of visionary design that EPCOT has not revived.

The new Spaceship Earth attraction should not only feature great technology. That only goes so far. But the tools should be used, as in Horizons, to paint an inspiring picture of what our future world can truly be. Should EPCOT's Future World be renamed Discoveryland? The change would only confirm the loss of this vital thread in EPCOT's mission. As EPCOT's icon and signature attraction, Spaceship Earth should regain sight of the ideals that move us all. . . and center the great technology around that instead.

Here is the essence of both Spaceship Earth and the entire Future World, distilled in an 1980's Cast Member document: "No one can be certain what the future will hold; the only thing we can be sure of is that mankind will continue to reach outward, overcoming new challenges, seeking new opportunities, finding new frontiers. Wherever the future will be, it is we who are creating it as we move on toward the horizon of tomorrow."

:p

Thanks for the FYI

Sorry I'm so late in showing my disdane, but I can't be here often enough to cruise all of the threads!

As for SSE - IMHO it needs a smidge of rehab...nothing more.

Well... I know this will sound kinda silly and sappy, but... When my family and I were down there in April, the last ride i rode was SE. I took a while to soak it all in one last time and to really look at how beautiful a ride it actually is. Knowing in 5 years when we return, it will be a memory just like Horizons or WOM. But now that I've ridden SE for probably my last time, I feel better about it all as I've given the ride that has awed millions my final respects for not being an out-dated ride, but as a ride that inspired me back in my first trip to Epcot CENTER back in 1982. Who knows what the future holds. Maybe M:S will finally be the one to make me believe Disney still has enough magic in the wand to create a solid, well thought out ride, time will tell. I can't help but feel they failed miserably with Test Track and Imagination. Basing a park to cater to teenagers IMHO is not well thought out given they do not represent the major part of the money spenders in Disney. Look at DCA, it's basically a teeny-land and never has done well. Hopefully Disney can prove me wrong, hopefully they can revive the magic to inspire a whole new generation, but unfortunately, i think they have lost it. They can't seem to be happy being the king so they are trying like heck to be like all those parks that try to be Disney. Did that make sense?? LOL Anyways, my point is, I've made peace with SE leaving, hopefully Disney won't drop the ball AGAIN.
