Epcot Fountain Statue Missing??

All of the unpleasant changes in Epcot have some kind of logical explanation. The big hand sign, Ellen, JIYI, etc. The one thing I can't figure out is why did they decide to take out that 3 pronged glass sculpture thing from the fountain in front of spaceship earth? It was great, really tied the entire plaza together visually. All of the other "enhancements" I can at least understand how someone would have thought of them as improvements - but the fountain?!?

It looks so pointless and empty without it!

That statue featured the old Epcot logo. The interlocking circles was the old logo, now they just use the name. I would assume that is why they got rid of it

I thought of that, but how many people really would care (aside from us of course), or know about the old logo? And what was wrong with the old logo anyway?

Eh, they are always changing stuff and reinventing their own ideas. I am a big fan of 'old' Epcot, although neither the hand on SE or Ellen's Energy Adventure really bother me (in fact I like the new Universe of Energy). Imagination though, that stinks on Ice now.:fork:

I agree, I think it i rediculous that "they" took out the symbol sculpture. The fountain is still there. I even see people tell eachother they will meet next to the fountain later in the day. I don't know why "they" have dropped almost all references to the old EPCOT Center. It should still be called EPCOT Center. Epcot as it is now spelled is not even a real word! I am hoping that Eisner will get voted "NO", and hopefulyl we can see a better and more historic step into restoring the old EPCOT Center, but of course keeping up with today's new technologies. I don't at all want EPCOT Center to be stuck in an 80s time warp, I just want architectual elements and symbols restored.

When I went to Epcot over president's day, I only saw the symbol three times. One at the entrance on the red screen. One that sits on the ground by the waltzing fountain, and another by Innoventions on the color screen.

Here is a link to a pic showing the fountain and spaceship earth without the forboding wand and stars on it.

P.S. Only three pavilions still use their symbols: Spaceship Earth, The Land, and Living Seas.

The fountain sculpture, and almost everything else related to the old EPCOT Center were removed just before the deadline of 2000.

I remember going to EPCOT in 98 and the fountain was all faded and looked like cr*p. I think this was another reason why they took it down.

I'd love to see a similar type of permanent artwork upon that fountain. I too mourn the loss of that great sculpture. And although indications point to deterioration, fading, etc. as the cause of its desmise, an inspiring sculpture deserves a place in front (not to the left-"HAND" side) of the most widely known and respected architectural feat in the Disney portfolio.

It's simply logical too. Have you ever noticed that those photo image monuments would be a perfect way to stop Spaceship Earth from rolling away if it were to get blown off it's supports? They didn't want the plexiglass fountain to get smashed, that's all!

MicBat,

I love your avatar. I laugh at that symbol every time I see it. I think, "Well...so my choices for seating on these rides is normal vs. acting like a crazed monkey...I think I'll choose...uh...normal." Anyways, your avatar made me laugh...I hadn't even thought of it as dancing!
