Trip Report Epcot & DHS - micro reports

Does the story of half a day at a park deserve a report? Well, I thought I'd give it a try... after being really busy for awhile (and with a busy schedule ahead) this past week I had the better part of a day to spare. It seemed like every day I went last year was really warm so the forecasted highs in the mid-50s were appealing. Note to northerners: radio station announcers will tell you the mid-50s is "bitter cold" here. Honestly!

First stop was Epcot. Uh, ok, the only stop was Epcot. Only had a few hours to spare today. Lots of ticket windows open and hardly any people there, got the new AP activated pretty fast. It was pretty obvious there wasn't a crushing crowd there, off-season and everything.

Lots of flowers planted in front of SSE

When we got there it was about 51° and peaked out at 55°, at times with a stiff breeze. That's the kind of weather that will cause some locals to dress like they're getting ready to go snowmobile racing. Others wear shorts and flipflops. Tourists? No idea how they decide what to wear or even bring with them.

Did I mention it was cold? It was only in the 50s! Ok ok, I'm not judging. Honest (it was colder here yesterday morning than it was in Portland Maine though, so...) This is kind of the rule for a 55° afternoon around here; hats, gloves, coats - or shorts.

My DS never wears more than a Northface Liner jacket in Florida and usually he is in shorts. When I shipped his clothes there were some winter duds requested, no winter coats, no hats aside from a few baseball hats, no gloves. Minus the stroller that could be my son.

But what made me giggle was the guy in this picture with his thick insulated gloves, we reserve those for nights like tonight with -15 and wind chills -34. The lady is just hilarious. That hat and scarf contraption with the hood pulled up over the hat. So freak'n funny. Yet she only appears to have yoga pants on, not insulated snowpants.

This post made my night, thank you from Siberia up here tonight. As I've crawled under my down comforter at -9 already I'll dream of this couple with a smile on my face knowing they could never cut it up here.

That's winter in Florida...and fall...and spring sometimes. In the late fall when we start getting cold fronts (when it drops down into the 70s) it's not unusual to see people going into the grocery stores dressed up like it's 40 degrees. It's what you get used to I guess :)

Another micro report -- had two very busy weeks and with our lousy weather I got a break today and spent it at Epcot! Apparently there's some running event there this weekend (yeah, I haven't kept up on that stuff - walking around Epcot is enough for me). Everything looked really crowded early on.

First up - had to hit Club Cool for a quick chug of Beverly (seriously), followed by one of the others. Haven't decided on my new favorite yet.

Walking around...things are different here, what is it? Oh yeah, the Flower and Garden Festival is just around the corner. Lots of reminders of it too:

A lot of it is set up already too, which is nice!

I was off because of the weather - very low ceilings and fog (yes, the "sunshine state" thing is pretty much a farce - no snow, but it isn't clear and sunny all the time either). Looked like the rain showers around WDW moved off early in the morning but - no - it really clouded up quick. I need to rework this a little at some point, but I like it (for photogeeks, this is 5 images combined, handheld):

Heading along the rain was moving in and then loud rumbles of thunder. Once it started sprinkling we jumped into Japan and looked around. Turned into a prolonged stay; the sprinkles turned into light rain which turned into a massive downpour. Anyway - the front display in Mitsukoshi changed a lot:

Best part of the day? After going through the parking toll booth and jockeying for position with all the other drivers (they all seem to think it's a race to get to the parking lot), I timed it just right and got the very first spot on the end. :D

And maybe that takes several years. My son has been down there several years and is still not cold at 50. That in FL is light coat weather, thus the reason I get a kick out of the heavy duty sub zero gloves. Too funny.

What a marvelous pic! Looks like it is made in France itself :)
