Epcot change is good...

I believe that Epcot's Future World should change, Epcot is supposed to showcase things of the future. This is the only part of Walt's dream of Epcot that is still alive. I think Walt would agree. Anyone agree?

I think it sh/c/ould change too...

Trust me, I am not against a change of Future World at all...

But I am against a change if the change steps over certain parameters which include the following:

1.) Any change must be in the spirit of Epcot; Epcot is a park dedicated to the spirit of human innovation: As it reads on the dedication plaque:
"To all who come to this place of joy, hope and friendship, welcome. Epcot Center is inspired by Walt Disney's creative genius. Here, human achievements are celebrated through imagination, the wonders of enterprise, and concepts of a future that promises new and exciting benefits for all. May Epcot Center entertain, inform and inspire. And, above all, may it instill a new sense of belief and pride in man's ability to shape a world that offers hope to people everywhere. "
Any change that is contradictory to that dedication, or even simply is unbiased towards that spirit, i.e. doesn't negate it but doesn't further it, is not a good change.

What I am saying is any changes must a. Entertain, b. Inform, and c. Inspire.
Those three criteria are essential in keeping the spirit of Epcot alive as it progresses and changes in the future.

2.) Family family family!
We cannot have Epcot consisting of adult thrill rides that split the family up. While occasional thrill rides are fine (Test Track, Mission Space), the primary focus of management of Disney towards Epcot should not be one of just creating thrill rides. Family experiences must be heavily prevalant. That is why Spaceship Earth should remain in its current incarnation; if it turns into a thrill ride, then there is one more thrill ride in the park and one less family ride. Thus, it is sort of a double-knockout punch. The family is at a -2.

3.) Quality quality quality!
No more JIYMs! Changes cannot occur at Epcot if they are being used to create attractions seemingly devoid of quality. Everything at Epcot we experience shoudl Entertain us, Inform us, and Inspire us. I find it hard to believe that an immersive experience as of an Epcot attraction that has little quality will ever be able to entertain us, let along inspire us! We need to be blown away, and this "blowing away" doesn't have to rely on brute thrill ride adrenaline.

4.) New attractions should transcend pop fads of our era. If the attraction is merely a capitalization of a current trend in the marketplace or in the entertainment industry, then we can bet assuredly that in a few years Epcot will need to chage again. Time must be transcended... The attraction, and its story, must be timeless

5.) Leave room for updates.

A good example of this is Spaceship Earth. At the end of the ride, emerging technologies are showcased. However, when these technologies become commonplace in the marketplace, they can always be taken out and newer technologies added into the attraction. All new changes in Epcot should follow this. They should be easily upgradable, and easily reverted back to a prior state. Imagine ripping out half of Future World to create the lush Discoveryland only to find out that by doing so, you would never be able again to build a new pavilion in Future World. Or something like that. You have to make sure that you remain omnisicient, and can update something, or downgrade something.

I believe celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse puts this best: "You can always add more seasoning (to the food) but you can never take the seasoning back out."

6.) Story/message.

What is the attraction inspiring us to do? What is the story of it? SE is the history of communication. TLS is the story of man's relationship with the ocean. TLand is. man's realtionship with the Earth.

But what is Test Track?!! The story of automobile proving grounds!

How interesting!

Test Track does not inspire us to shape a world that creates hope for all its peoples -- It inspires us to floor our cars on the freeway!! How informative!

I am of course being facetious. But of course, you have to consider these things when talking about possible changes for Epcot.

With that, I will leave you, my humble reader, detached from the horrible grasp of my mind.

And hope you leave enlightened.:)

Wow. That's some post. Anyway, I agree with the first post. I think Future World is in need of desperate change. If that means changing the original concept for the area, I say so be it.

I have to agree with this. Epcot FW needs to be rethinked. I'm pretty sure that some major changes will come to this area so the ideal of a futuristic world could come alive once again.

Good points, but about Test Track. Test Track does have message. It is about the history of man's attepts to make better transportation ( as displayed in queue ) and how things like that are tested today to make a drive in a car safer.

I think FW needs a change but I agree they can't just go with what's popular they need to keep some slower more relaxing rides so that families can enjoy them together. I think 3-D rides are great but my mom get's claustaphobic in them. I think one of the main reasons we haven't gone to Univ. Stu. is because they are all thrill rides and my family is not big on thrills. I just hope that Epcot changes for the better.

You can definetely argue that, but I won't argue.

Test Track is not general transportation. It is about cars. Transportation we've had for over 4000 years.
Automobiles we've had for less than a century!
(1906 - Ford)
Now, World of Motion was the history of transportation, TT history of car safety.

Hey, you betta not be dissin TT! And yea, it does have a point. It's the achievements on car safety, and the future of car design, exactly what you want, discovery, which TT is about. You're saying that TT doesn't explain how cars have evolved and the new safety systems in them which will be in the cars of the future, and today.

I like Test Track. It is one of my favorite attractions in Epcot. And, I like Test Track's VIP lounge. And everything else. I even like the Test Track medley!

But you have to know where I am coming from.

u make it out like TT and M:S are wild thrill rides that split up the family. They are not. TT is very tame compared to today thrill ride standards yet is still appealing and appeals to the whole family, (which is true for all disney rides except for RnRC maybe). M:S will also not be a family splitter. You must realize that if disney doesnt have any exciting rides any only has boring attractions, then there will be no DISNEY WORLD. you are a small percentage of WDW guests with ur "conservative approach"

I am a "Disney Conservative"...

I am not against TT or MS. I totally agree:
While occasional thrill rides are fine (Test Track, Mission Space)...

However:
The primary focus of management of Disney towards Epcot should not be one of just creating thrill rides.

And there is no denying that, although TT might be to a lesser degree, M:S is not an attraction that little 7-year olds are going to be going on, at least according to what I have heard. So that means if Mom and/or Dad and/or say, the 13-year old Ashley, want to go on it, they'll have to figure out a way to do it with little 7-year old Tommy.

:)
