I seem to remember full size robots, or people in suits walking around Epcot a few years back. I think they were called EpBots. I know they used to have the robot Gyro. Does anyone remember them?

I do. Were they in chrome robot suits? We saw them on our first trip to WDW in November 1997. Haven't seen them since.

Wow, those look terrifyingly like Cylons from Battlestar Galactica... I think there would be running and screaming if I saw them wandering around Epcot :)

We saw the EpBots in Aug of '97. They were 2 girls and I kept thinking about how hot they must get, dancing in those 'metal' (whatever they were made of) suits. They were very entertaining. Our 2 sons were mesmerzied.

I wonder what happened to those performers, they were amazing. (Probably the contract rain up and they didn't choose to return, just as my other favorite from Italy "Nova Era") And the suits that they had were fascinating. So interactive and obviously controlled by the actors using various knobs and buttons on their bodies and arms, but I could never for the life of me figure out how they were doing it. I used to love watching them and Kristos. At least Kristos is still there!

My cousin was on the college programme back in 97' and worked on them. He is very small framed as you can imagine.

He used to get very hot, and didn't enjoy it too much because he couldn't get up stairs well in the suit, the only real way he could get himself up was to pull his and give it a good tug, apparantly the suits didnt work well. If he tugged on his too hard he would sometimes shoot off.....and end up on the floor.

Still, good technology back then!

Not to bother you, but what was Kristos?

You are correct indeed, the Epbots (also known as the Droidz) were real people who wore robotic chrome suits (one was a male called Digit, and a female called Eve I think). They were very convincing at performing real robots, and used to be a world sensation, especially in the 1990s. However, I only know that the Epbots only performed at Epcot during 1997. After that, they left and stopped performances at the park. Today, they are rarely seen and little known about.

Gyro, on the other hand, was a remote controlled robot about 4 feet high that also performed at Epcot. He was purple, had a gold visor, and a round dome-shaped head with a small antennea at the top. He also had no legs and could speak to guests and visitors. This robot did perform regularly in the 1980s, but since then, he has'nt been seen again by anyone.

I hope that this information has satisfied your curiousity. See Ya!

Geez, just noticed this was from 2009! However, I'll respond anyway . . . Nova Era still performs at DTD. (Last time I saw them was in in 2013.) I believe the group that used to perform in the Italy pavilion in Epcot was Rondo Veneziano (or Rondo Masquerade).

Now returning to 2015 . . . :cautious:
