Pre-Trip englanddg's Surf and Turf Adventure - Pre-trip / Trip Report Aug 2013

Ok, since I've been slack, I've missed out on an ADR for Be Our Guest. So, anyone planning trips who wants to try this, be sure you hit the 180 marker!

Don't be a slacker like me!

However, Be Our Guest does not do reservations for lunch, so the kid and I will probably try to squeeze in for a Lunch seating, and of course will check for ADR cancellations closer to the trip.

So, I've got everything registered in the My Disney Experience App on my iPad and iPhone, but I used the website to link everything together.

I must say, I do like the new layout of the site. It was fairly easy to use. However, it did not bring over all the hotel reservations that I had already booked and set up on the website, even though it tried to do an import of them.

Not a major issue tough, as it took only a few minutes to re-link everything.

The planner utility looks rather nice, and allows you to assign parks to various days, gives you park hours and event times, etc. I am going to keep playing with it, but I think I may rely on this app instead of loading everything into Google Docs as I have done in the past.

For those not familiar, for the trip I put everything into Google Docs linked to a special email account I created just for trips. This is hours of data entry, but it's nice to have all that information at my fingertips.

It appears that the My Disney Experience will alleviate this requirement, which I think is fantastic!

My only issue so far is that it doesn't integrate with Disney Cruise Lines. That would make it a perfect app for planning the whole trip, in my view. Hopefully they are heading that direction sometime in the future.

There is a neat utility on the Disney Cruise site which allows you to schedule a call from either Goofy or Mickey. I chose Mickey. The neat thing is that you can either have the call go out immediately, or pre-schedule a time. I chose to pre-schedule it for 9a on August 3. The Kid and I should be at Chef Mickey's around that time eating breakfast before the DCL Magical Express picks us up to take us to Port Canaveral.

The inbound phone number is 866.882.5010, so I have put this number into my phone and saved it as a contact called "Mr. Mouse", that way when the call comes in, I will know exactly who it is (I don't like answering weird phone calls from 8xx numbers), plus the kid, who now reads quite well, will see Mr. Mouse on the caller ID, which I think is a nice touch.

I am trying to picture her face when she gets a call during breakfast from Mickey Mouse welcoming her on her new cruise. Mind you, I have decided I am not telling her anything about a Disney trip this year. Since we go every year, she may suspect we are doing something, but I haven't told her what, and I am quite sure she would never guess a Disney Cruise!

So, updating the itinerary here's what I've got so far. Things will probably change between now and August, but this is a general layout. By the way, any restaurants I mention, I will note if they are ADRs or not.

In 2010, I had no issues getting into restaurants without ADRs, except for Le Cellier. But, in 2011 we had a lot of trouble. So, in 2012, I booked us to the gills with ADRs. My experience with this was horrid.

I felt like the whole trip became focused not around what we wanted to relax and enjoy together, but making sure we rushed around to make our ADRs. So, this year I will not be making quite as many ADRs, focusing only on restaurants I really want to eat at, rather than trying to plan lunch / breakfast / dinner every day.

So, here's the general plan...

8/1 - Fly to DC, Eat Dinner at Pentagon City Mall (There's a Diner there she likes) and Stay in DC

8/2 - Fly from DC to Orlando International, early flight, arrive around 10a. Magical Express to Contemporary. If the room is not yet available, check our bags with Bell Services and head over to the Magic Kingdom.

Bell Services is a neat feature, for those who have not used it. Official Check In is around 3p, as I recall, so they may not have a room ready for you if you arrive earlier. I have never experienced this, but if that ever happens, it's not a big deal. Bell Services will hold your luggage in a monitored / secure location until your room is ready.

Now, you may ask why I don't use the room bag delivery option included with the Magical Express. Quite simple...I don't trust it. Something about making sure my bag gets put on the right bus and delivered to the right hotel is important to me. But, the service does exist, and I've heard is rather nice, as you can show up, check-in, and go to the parks. When you get back, your bags will already be in your room.

But, as I said, I don't trust it.

For this first leg of the trip, I am doing one night at the Contemporary. I've added a one day base ticket to this (for Friday at Magic Kingdom), and the Deluxe Dining Plan. This means, for this leg of the trip, I will have 6 table service credits and 4 snack credits.

I plan to use 4 of the dining credits for our traditional first meal at Disney at Cinderella's Royal Table. We always do this on the first and last nights of our trips since 2010, and it wouldn't feel right not to kick off what is certainly our longest trip, and most varied trip, without getting pictures with the Princesses.

Magic Kingdom is likely to have nighttime Extra Magic Hours on Friday (it does most years), so we'll just spend the whole day there. I doubt we'll finish out Magic Hours, as we need to be up early the next day.

8/3 - 8:45 ADR for breakfast at Chef Mickeys will use up our final two table credits. Disney Cruise Lines will be sending a bus to pick us up and take us to Port Canaveral. The bus should arrive between 10a and 12:30p, so that's plenty of time for a quick meal with Mickey. As I mentioned before, I also pre-scheduled Mickey to call at 9a, and I'll let him tell her about the Cruise. Of course, I plan to have the video camera primed for this!

That afternoon, we'll be taken to Port Canaveral and board the Fantasy. Off to the waves!

8/4 - At Sea - No plans right now outside of exploring the ship

8/5 - Grand Cayman Island - Grand Cayman Island Tour

8/6 - Costa Maya, Mexico - Dolphin Swim Port Adventure

8/7 - Cozumel, Mexico - Atlantis Submarine Expedition Port Adventure

8/8 - At Sea

8/9 - Castaway Cay - Castaway Cay Stingray Port Adventure

8/10 - Early arrival back to Port Canaveral. Disney Magical Transit will then take us to Port Orleans French Quarter. We'll leave the bag with Bell Services if our room is not ready and head out to EPCOT. No dinner plans (though I'd like to do Coral Seas or Germany Pavilion...we'll see how we feel).

8/11 - Breakfast at the Hotel, Animal Kingdom, Lunch wherever we like (I'd like Tuskers or Yak and Yeti), leave mid afternoon and head back to the hotel to hang out for a bit. Get freshened up and go to Jikos (ADR) for dinner.

8/12 - Breakfast at Hotel, Hollywood Studios, Dine with an Imagineer Lunch at Brown Derby (Yes, I want to do it again...though I may change my mind. This is the only day they are doing it during our trip).

8/13 - Free Day, possibly Universal Studios

8/14 - Wild Africa Trek at AK, then more AK or do whatever, like Water Parks. Dinner at EPCOT.

8/15 - Free Day, Possibly Legoland

8/16 - Richard Petty Driving Experience (afternoon) - Bowling at DTD for dinner.

8/17 - Free Day, Possibly Sea World

8/18 - Disney's Family Magic Tour at Magic Kingdom. Rest of the day wide open.

8/19 - Check bags with Bell Services. Crystal Palace for breakfast (before park opening ADR). Magic Kingdom. Leave after the 3p parade to catch a late flight back to DC. Drop off the kid.

8/20 - Head back to Atlanta, and start planning the trip for 2014!

As you can see, it's not all fleshed out, but I am also trying to hold myself back from overplanning the trip. I learned my lesson last year!

Anyhow, there's my pre-trip update so far!

OK- I shouldn't be allowed to watch videos like this...at least not while DH is around. I start getting choked up and he starts mocking me.

Really looks like a fabulous trip you've got planned here and can't wait to see the video you wind up putting together after all is said and done. And I don't think she'll mind about the room/summer camps. After surprising our older one for her bday a couple years back, she has informed me that I'm allowed to skip things like formal birthday parties and extra field trips at summer camp if it means financing another bday trip to WDW.

I break down for videos like this too...

I live alone, so no one to make fun of me.

I hope she doesn't mind the money I spent on this trip instead of summer trips...when she gets a bit older, I will invest in windjammer and other experiences...but for now, it's all Disney....

I miss her...

I've heard great things about Windjammer.

I'm sure it's got to be so tough having such limited time with her, but you are doing so much to try and make every bit as super special as possible. I'm sure she'll love it! :)

I've heard great things about Windjammer.

My Dad took me on one as a teen. It was loads of fun. You get to learn all about the ship, and help crew it, etc. We learned about the riggings and knots, etc. Even today, I can still tie a bowline in less than 3 seconds (not kidding, there's a trick with your hands to do it) because of that trip. It was one of many requirements before they let you climb the rigging and man the crows nest...which was something I desperately wanted to do (and did...many times).

Our route took us from harbor at Key West, where we got to participate in a mock Pirate Battle Show that was being put on for the tourists (not that we weren't also tourists...but, it was neat to be allowed in the show). Our Captain weaved the ship in a deadly dance with some sailboats, all the while we were firing off little cannons at each other. We were the pirates...

From there we sailed out to Lagerhead Key and the Dry Tortugas, toured the old fort there, and stopping at various little islands and bays along the way to snorkel /scuba, deep sea fish, etc.

Most of the time, we caught our dinner.

We sailed on a topsail schooner. This one, in fact:

Great activity for a 14 - 18 year old outing, I think. Someday.

I posted elsewhere how my year goes...a cycle of trip planning, waiting, youtube videos, etc...

But I'm in the final phase now. Less than 43 days to go. All payments made, all flights booked, everything is done as of yesterday. I opted to change our itinerary for the 10 days at Disneyworld on the second leg of the trip, and and do two days at Universal / IoA (using Mears for transit from POFQ) and one day at LegoLand (since the kid requested that specifically, ever since she did the legoland here in Atlanta last year as a summer camp trip, she's been obsessed with it)...

That will eat up Weds through Friday of that week...and I do need to still call Disney to cancel my tickets for those dates...

I'm still playing around with ADRs and experiences...so things may change again, come July 1 (exactly one month out from the trip) I'll draw a line in the sand and stop messing with our trip...but I think this is pretty much done.

I have to say, the Cruise is something I'm really looking forward to...especially her face when she figures it out!

Still in the "youtube" stage. Anticipation!

At work, I've spent the past few weeks weening people off me onto my subordinate for IT support so that when I go he's able to confidently hold down the fort...actually skipping whole days and not answering the phone and letting him chat with me if he has issues.

Though I still suspect there will be some massive blow up during our trip (there has been every trip)...but, the guy who works for me now is passionate about IT and systems, and is by far the best IT hire and #2 I've ever had...he could actually do my job if he learned some programming, and he's great with customer service. First one I've ever had who could. He is weak on the programming side, but is fully directable over the phone for that (I've done it a few times)...

So, there we sit! I think I'm going to start another thread for the actual trip report in a month or two, as this one has been a bit rambling...I may not...<shrug>

Ok, it's all starting to get very real now. Only 40 days left until the World, 39 until my trip officially kicks off with a flight to DC.

Starting to get to where I can really turn this into a serious trip report instead of a series of varied and rambling posts in anticipation!

So, all is booked and paid for. There have been a few adjustments to the plan, and only one straggler (Universal for one day or two?)...I found a package that includes park hopper Universal tickets and includes Mears transit from any Disney Resort, so...like I said...one day? Or two? Thoughts?

Legoland has been booked for Weds, as the kid specifically asked about this experience. I decided on using the Legoland Shuttle (something I will expound upon later in the report after I get to experience it first hand) But, for $5, they will take you to Legoland and back from the Disney Resort area. No hotel pickup, rather they meet at a shopping center just south of I-4, so I'll need to arrange a cab or something through Mears to get me to the shuttle area, but...<shrug> Still cheaper than renting a car for the day!

So, as I stated the other day, my DCL Mickey Mail came in the other day. I thought I'd share some images of what it looks like for anyone planning or thinking about a DCL Cruise. It is VERY different from Parks Mickey Mail. In many ways, I like it better! Though, I still think the Disneyland California packet was better...just for unique packaging if nothing else.

The booklet is divided into sections, many of which are personalized for your trip (based on what you've done on the www.disneycruise.com website to pre-plan your trip). I found it very informative, and well organized. It doesn't feel so much like a walking advertisement with a loose jumble of unrelated information, like the Parks Mickey Mail does. Note, the pictures are redacted of extremely personal information, so where you see blanks for names, there really are names, I just edited them out.

Important Extras
How to do online airline checkin, which is not a concern for my trip, but still neat. This also includes gratuity guidelines for the cruise

Ship Contact Info
Fold and ripout business size style cards you can leave with friends and relatives with your contact info, or rather, SHIP contact info, in case someone needs to contact you in an emergency while you are on board without a Cel phone or other means of communication. NICE TOUCH DISNEY!

Cruise Documents
A breakdown of cruise documents that you will need to have with you.

Gifts and Amenities
Of course, Disney needs to try and sell you add-ons to plus your trip, right? This form both plugs their available packages and allows you to order them through the form, and also instructs you on how to order them in advance.

Legal Stuff
What "Mickey Mail" would be complete without that?

Onboard Airline Checkin Information
Again, something I won't be using on this trip, but it is neat to know it is an option!

Also, my GoPro finally came in. It's a Hero3 Black, and MUCH smaller than I expected. I also got the head / chest / wrist mounts. I also got in my new lightweight tripod that both pans and tilts (my older Targus one only panned...I didn't realize at the time how much I would want a tilt feature). The only thing on my photography checklist for this trip that's left is to pick up a Gorilla Pod.

The camera outside of the protective housing (which is interchangeable) is incredibly small!

9116325146_5acd17cbc9_b.jpg

Something to note for anyone looking at this camera system...the LCD screen is NOT a part of the camera. Rather it's an addon that clips (rather well) on the back. The LCD screen addon includes new backings for the waterproof/shockproof casings that allow it to be used or viewed (one has a soft plastic backing, the other a hard plastic backing, depending on how severe a trip you plan to take the camera on! Your choice!)

9114096279_d811b7b732_b.jpg

I will be playing around with it and the mounts of the next few days, but I plan to use it to grab on-ride / experience shots while at the parks for my inevitable videos! While I have a waterproof Pentax already that I think would work fine, it only does 720p...aside from that, it doesn't have the mounting options that this does, and considering the dunk the kid and I took to get the waterslide video last year (and how it effected her mood!), I would rather have something mounted on my head or chest, even if I look a bit of the dork while on the ride!

Here's most of my set.

9114097229_12da48e748_b.jpg

This would become an all in one solution for me (heck, it's MINIMUM setting is 1080 for video), however, it doesn't have a flash or some of the options my Sony Cybershot does. So, I will be carrying this and the Sony on this trip. The Pentax will get donated to my Dad, who will probably use it for ambiance / filler captures for when he does videos for Drum Corps International and my (27 year old) sister, I suspect. The last Sony Cybershot I had ended up in his possession as well...as it's the previous model to the one I have now.

Here's one of his videos (and my sister is performing, by the way, I won't tell you which one she is)...She also did the choreography work on this...her life is a mix of contracts. Been there, done that myself. Well, not dancing, but contract work. <grin>

So, next major step is to make up my mind about Universal...which I will do in the next few days...maybe even today.

After that, it's off to final PACKING!

Now I feel the need to post it, for any lurkers following along...

Oh, I was actually referring to wdwmagic in the video when I said that people will post "If you don't like it then you shouldn't pay"...

Holy crap, that is awesome! Takes creative to a whole new level. :)

First class package from DCL! Love the detail, especially important if someone is combining both a cruise and a WDW vacation, like yourself.

I'm just starting to learn more about the GoPro. Thanks for the pictures, etc.

Looks like you are just about ready to get your party started! Don't be nervous about the cruise. The nice thing about the cruise is the flexibility. You can do as much or as little as you feel like any day. For me at WDW, I always feel like any time not spent at the parks is time wasted. You won't feel that on a cruise. It's a much more relaxed pace. Besides, you both need to leave a little energy for your post-cruise trip to WDW!

I'm really excited for the both of you!

Thanks!

It just happened upon me one night (the inspiration) and the video (very bad, I admit, and again apologize for singing) took another few hours...

But, I meant every word.

My first attempt at anything like that, and you can see the wire for the headphone I used to try and keep my singing in line with the background track.

Thanks. I'm actually very nervous about this trip, as it is the most complex that I've planned for us, and it is the only time I'll see the kid face to face this year (and actually get to BE Daddy rather than play it through phone calls and facetime chats)...

I do miss her, so it's going to be extra special for me. I've seen, through pictures, how she's grown, but it really won't hit me until I see her face to face again...

And, if she thinks she's in for a soft time, she forgets (or more accurately doesn't know), her mom and I talk regularly regarding her development!

My kid is the only exception...

Funny you should like that post.

But, I know for a fact I will always have an open heart and mind for my kid. And I want her to completely believe in love, no matter how bitter I may be at times, so it's not something I discuss with her. I'm guess I'm a romantic at heart.

I can't wait to dance at my kid's wedding, as we've danced since she could walk.

I have zero (and I mean zero) musical ability. As such, you will never see me critiquing someone else's singing. Wish that my wife was a WDW junkie like me. That is one of her favorite songs. Unfortunately she'd never get all of the references that you made in your video.
