Emissions: Bus vs (mono)rail

So it's not an exact comparison for the Disney debate of Bus vs Monorail... but it's pretty gosh darned close.

BRT cleaner than electric rail transit, study says

Electric rail systems generate significant air pollution, particularly where these systems are powered by electricity generated by fossil fuel power plants, according to a new study.

The study, conducted by the Breakthrough Technologies Institute, reveals that bus rapid transit (BRT) produces significantly less pollution than electric rail, while costing a fraction of the cost to build and operate.

"Using coal to power transit simply moves the tailpipe to the smokestack -- the overall environment benefit is questionable," said Bill Vincent, author of the study.

Three forms of transit were looked at throughout the study: electric heavy rail, electric light rail and BRT.

It found that electric rail transit systems create significant power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, mercury and particulate matter, that contribute to smog, lung disease and global climate change.

The study also found that BRT systems can produce significantly less pollution than electric rail when powered by advanced engines and fuels.

The report makes a number of recommendations to maximize the environmental value of transit investments, including requiring transit agencies to purchase renewable power wherever that option is available.

The report, titled "The Electric Rail Dilemma: Clean Transportation From Dirty Electricity?", is available for free download at http://www.gobrt.org.

Thanks, Tyler. Very interesting info.

Not the only reason why busses are much more practical than the monorail.

.....but the monorail is still cooler.:D

No debate there... always has been, always will be. In fact, I went to Chef Mickey's today, and specifically requested a table with a Monorail view. :D

This is a huge debate here in teh DC area. There's a poposal to extend the local Metrorail down the center of teh DUlles Toll Road. Basically, expedning mass transit to where people actually live - mass transit in the DC area is very pointless, IMO. NOt thought out at all.

The idea is to start with BRT and then switch to rail, BUT there are folks who inist on Rail only and those who want BRT only and lotf of other crap because Virginia has no more money.

Wow, I would have figured that someone goout and build one of those nice Nice new coal plants. Florida has one at the moment in Polk County, owned by teco. produces almost no polution.

Power the momorail by that, however It is Expensive To build.
So disney would be broke if they built that. LOL

Hmmm... it's not surprising that a group which exists to promote fuel cell technology would come out fighting against remotely-powered transportation systems.
