Electronic devices on rides :(

Hi Everyone
Huge Disney and Theme Park Junkie. - My wife and I go every year.

Anyway, a few years ago we noticed that children and adults were bringing cell phones and tablets on rides. Not to record or take pictures but to check things and play games.

Last summer really took the cake - almost every ride we had to ask people to turn off their devices because they were lighting everything up, which really sucks in a dark ride.

I remember going to Disney when I was younger - if you gave me an electronic device I would have thrown it to the ground - what is with this generation (parents included)?

For me and my family, a vacation was a time to get closer and spend time with everyone. Put everything away and just be together. People are really missing the boat with this one, no pun intended:).
Disney is an amazing environment that you can literally forget the outside world, yet so many kids and adults don't seem to care at all.
Just thought I would post my first rant - Come on people take that vacation and make some memories together - this is not a trip to the mall - it's DISNEY!!!

Thanks for reading.

Yeah I see it everyday..... really makes you wonder. (Why did you come here?) it seems like people need to be amused constantly. And they can't tolerate any downtime. I don't get it either.

I completely understand the idea of choosing to disconnect from the world when you're on a long planned family vacation.

What I've never been able to understand is why some feel the need to judge others for choosing to use their technology when traveling. If their use that technology is not negatively impacting your travel experience what difference does it make?

The problem is that their use of electronics negatively impacts my experience. iPad screens that light up a dark ride, people crashing into you while they try to walk and text at the same time, people taking a call in the back of the auditorium during a show.

Honestly I don't think anyone here is coming from the judging angle just trying to understand.

I would hazard a guess (since you are the same age as my children) that the Internet and connectivity when you were a boy weren't what they are today. You didn't see it in the parks because WiFi didn't even exist back then.

But it has become imbedded into the average person's daily routine now. I don't really care if someone feels the need to be glued to a screen out on the street or in a queue. But I do agree that turning them off once they are on a ride is a matter of common courtesy. Unfortunately today, courtesy has become anything but common. Light pollution from electronic screens is merely one example.

Thank you.... I agree about the courtesy. It's sad how we treat each other

Lit up displays on a dark ride, or iPads in your line of site is indeed a valid complaint. People crashing into you when walking, or being in the way isn't about technology, just disrespect for others. I can't count how many times I've bumped into folks or been bumped when I had to stop suddenly because a group ahead of me stopped in the middle of a pathway for any number of reasons blocking up the flow of traffic.

Phrases like: I remember going to Disney when I was younger - if you gave me an electronic device I would have thrown it to the ground - what is with this generation (parents included)? from the OP comes across as judgmental.

So what? If someone does something stupid or inconsiderate then they're going to get judged for it. That's how it goes.

I can see how you would have come to that conclusion. But (and I could be wrong) I don't think the gentlemen was intending to do that. I think in our own way we all agree the electronics can be problematic. And as previously stated what about "courtesy "

YES - Their technology and use of is impacting my experience and enjoyment on vacation.
A dark ride is called a dark ride for a reason - someone two seats away playing Angry Birds or watching Minecraft videos is changing my ride experience to a dimly lit ride.
Just like in a $12 movie - GET OFF YOUR PHONE - WE CAN ALL SEE IT !!!

Also - my experience and comparison to my younger self was an observation and commentary - not judgement - take it as you wish though.
I wanted to know if others are noticing the same trends as I am and perhaps being effected during their vacation as well.
I am sure there are others who treat vacations as special time to rekindle relationships and get to know more about loved ones.

I am in my late 30's - When I was a child/teen handheld video games were out - sony walkman's were all the rage.
Yet non of this tech was ever in the parks or part of daily living.
I often wonder if many people keep their children "hooked up" to keep them busy and keep behavior down.

I am also a teacher of 15+ years - I have seen what technology has been doing to our younger generation of children/ young people.
Limiting the use of technology seems to be a hard button for many parents to push.

But lets go back to simple courtesy - if your actions negatively impact others - maybe you should not do them.

This isn't about anything judgmental. I reserve the right to judge you if you're being objectively annoying. Simple as that.

Phones should be banned on every ride and show.

For all you people thinking that you're being discreet with your phone, you're not. We see it. It's negatively impacting people around you and you need to know how annoying it is.

Put your phone away.
True and honest question here. Outside of a dark ride where the light from the display can be a clear distraction to others, I'm unclear how someone else using a phone is causing me a distraction. For example, is someone catching up on emails or social media while cruising around on the PeopleMover a distraction? What I'm trying to separate is how much of this is an actual distraction to you (like light in a dark ride) vs someone who just wants to project their desire to personally disconnect from electronics on their trip onto others. Everyone has different standards of what's okay when it comes to electronics that works for them.

Since a large portion of folks visiting the parks are using their smartphones as their camera, it's impossible and unrealistic to expect them to not be in use it for that purpose, even on an attraction.

iPads however as cameras should be banned at all costs, both for the light they produce and the shear surface area they block for others.
