Electric carts.

Okay, I have a 74 yr. old mom that I would like to get back to Disney, it's been a long time for her and I know she would like to go, however due to health issues (breast and lung cancer survivor, double bypass surgery) she has trouble getting around especially longer walks and crowds. I know, that's what Disney is all about, walking and crowds, but I've seen people on those mobility scooters and wondered about where to rent them. Also do they take them to their resort, off and on the monorail etc.? If not, that really wouldn't be a problem as she can get around the resort okay, so if we had to get it at the park that would work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can rent them either from Disney or from an outside company. When you rent from Disney you can not take it outside of the parks. When you rent from an outside company you can take them anywhere. The only real con when renting from an outside company is when they break down. If that happens you are kind of stuck waiting for the rental company to fix it vs. just trading it in for a new one at the parks.

This article will give you the in's and outs of both options.

We used Walker rental for a scooter for my grandmother and I have no complaints about the company.

If there is anyone in your party who is able to push a wheelchair, you might want to consider that option. If I had it to do over again, we would have done a wheelchair for my grandmother rather than a scooter. Scooters are very difficult to navigate through crowds, get on and off transportation, etc..., and I think nearly everyone in our party got our foot run over by her at least once. She had never used a scooter before, so this could have been part of the reason. And so many people are rude and impatient....my grandmother was brought to tears more than once by rude guests. We still had a wonderful trip, but the scooter did cause us quite a few problems.

If you insist on a scooter, try to look into the different types that are available. I've seen some smaller ones that similar to an electric wheelchair that look MUCH easier to use than the huge traditional scooters. But I have no idea if they ones I have seen in the parks are available for rent, or if the people using them brought them from home.

Whatever you choose to do, I hope you have a wonderful time and I think it is so sweet you want to take your mother. Even with the problems we had, I am so happy we were able to take my grandmother with us.

My father in law rented a scooter from Disney at first. One time there weren't any available at AK, so we had to push him in a wheelchair. It was horrible! So many hills and he had to depend on us to push him everywhere, making him lose his independence. From then on, we rented from an outside company. Once we had an issue and they came right into the park where we were and traded out the scooter. We didn't have to wait very long for them either. My father in law and now my mother in law never had any problems driving them. Sure, my fil ran over his share of people, mostly because people weren't paying a bit of attention and walked right in front of him leaving him no choice. My mil isn't the best when it comes to running things, but she caught on very quickly and never had issues. I think a scooter would be your best choice if your mom wants to keep her independence. If everyone wants to ride on something and she doesn't, she free to meet back up with you and not be forced to sit and wait for someone to push her around. The bus drivers and monorail people never had a problem putting the scooter on for my mil. She was always worried about driving it on and off and they helped her out perfectly.

If you're staying at a Disney resort then contact them as I read somewhere that they can arrange an ECV rental for you so that you can use them in your resort and not just the parks (worth giving them a ring).

A couple of weeks ago my mum did something to a disc in her spine which meant that she couldn't really stand or walk. Unfortunately this was right in the middle of our trip. When we went to the parks/malls/etc we would rent a standard wheelchair ($10 per day at Disney parks) and I'd push her around. It actually wasn't too bad. Yes the parks were hilly (particularly around the Land pavillion) but it was easy to maneuver and the cast members were pretty great at helping us out (other park guests were awful but that's another story). There are also often wheelchairs near the bus stops/ parking lot that you can use in order to get to the rental location. I should point out (in the politest way possible) that my mum is not a stick (I was pushing around approx 270lbs each day) neither am athletic in the slightest. The standard chair was a lot cheaper than the ECV and would definitely be worth considering.
