El Rio Del Tiempo Refurb Question....

I keep seeing all kinds of El Rio update info online and everyone is mentioning the Donald Duck movie thing being installed. My question is this - just where is everyone getting this information from? I sent an email to Disney itself asking if any changes were being made and their response to me was "we have not been informed of any changes to the ride". Now, not sure if that just means they are not releasing the information or not, but I would think that if they were changing it so drastically, someone would have definite information. Does anyone know where this Donald Duck rumor came from? And does anyone have any actual facts regarding the El Rio refurb? Thanks....

Keep in mind, Disney really doesn't acknowledge stuff like that. They will confirm when a ride is going down for refurb, but until they make a big public announcement they don't give details.

The info you have heard, spread by me and others, comes from...um....inside type sources. Anonymous kinda thing...but true none the less. :zipit:

The refurb will not be all that extensive. Look for some new animations of the 3 Cabs, general freshening of the ride, and some potential queue work.

Ok, that is a start...do you know where and how the ducks will fit into the ride? I can't see how they can be added without changing the dynamic of the entire ride...unless the marketplace vendors (the ones on the screens) will be selling 3 Cabs DVD's (?) along with their blankets and maraccas. Is there any more information you can provide? Thanks....

Looks like it is going down on 1/2/07. I will miss it too since I won't be going till later in the year. I am praying to the Myan gods (or whoever will listen) that they don't change it. Ok, maybe they can have the duck charactors handing out margaritas and nachos somewhere along the way, but that's it!

Well, look what characters just so happen to be doing meet and greets outside of Mexico now. I took this photo last week, but have seen them even in September.

Thanks for the pics.

Don't get me wrong, I love El Rio, but I can't believe how many people are talking about this!

Sorry, but to me it is a life-changing event. What if you just found out they were doing something horrible to your favorite ride? Laugh if you will, but yes, it is my favorite ride and I am devastated. Maybe they should just add Pooh or Bambi to SSE while they are at it. Why oh why can't they just leave things alone??:brick:

I understand I really do. My all time favorite ride at Magic Kingdom was 20,000 leagues under the sea. My second favorite ride at Epcot was Horizons. Mr. Toad rated in my top 10. I miss those rides so very much. In fact, just a few minutes ago I was remembering a visit as a child with my dad (who's two favorite rides were Toad and 20k) and how much fun it was to go back and forth between those two rides and how that area of the park just seems so broken now to me without that lagoon. And I was wondering if I'll ever get over how sad it is that I can't even ride anything resembling either of those attractions anymore. I miss them like crazy.

Another one that rated in my top 10 that I miss is "If You Had Wings". I absolutely adored it. You'll cope just like I will and find something else to be your favorite ride in the future. You'll still have a hint of sadness when you remember how it once was though.

Because Walt himself was a fan of progress... change for change's sake isn't a good idea -- you don't change something because you can, you change something because you should. If it can be improved, if it can be done differently, if the story can reach more people and be more effective at communicating it's purpose, that's the goal. People don't understand El Rio -- it's a great attraction. I have love for it as it is. The fireworks are magnificent. The looping hot tub video is hilarious (even if it didn't intend to be). The explanation of the Dia de Muerta leaves something to be desired. Adding the 3 Caballeros isn't a magical pill that will cure Rio's ills... but if it can improve the story and reach the audience where they are, it will be worthwhile.

Most of the time you write Disney, you get a canned, automated response.

From what I can gather from these rumors, they might take out Montezuma (isn't that the guy?) and put the three cabelleros as the host to narrate the ride. :)

As long as the song remains, it'll be all right. :)

Actually, I'm surprised that the Three Caballeros weren't in the attraction in the first place!

I believe the changes will be seen as positive, even by the most loyal supporters of the orginal verison :)

Merging the ride with 'the three cabelleros' "fits" so well in every way! :)

Whenever something is refurbished, I usually do not like the change. After experiencing the change myself.

Stitch - I did not like this refurb because I liked Alien Encounter better.

The Seas - While I do like the new look, I feel the name change was unneeded. In addition, the place is too crowded now.

Polynesian - The new Polynesian truly depresses me. The arcade is so loud and unavoidable, new Captain Cooks is tacky and confusing, the rooms are ugly compared to the older rooms, and we do not like Ohana's new menu/character meal. The Polynesian refurb definitely upset me most.

Back on topic: I am a fan of Donald Duck, so I think I will like this change. Hopefully it will no longer be Mexican it's a small world. Then again, longer lines...

Some told me that The Three Cabelleros do have Mexican ties, but weren't they in a movie that took place in Brazil (Saludos Amigos?) Or were they in another movie that takes place in Mexico? Otherwise, it doesn't seem like they really would fit in the ride. Anyone know?

Saludos Amigos features only Donald Duck and Jose Carioca (the green parrot); the film takes place primarily in South America. The Three Cabelleros includes a Brazilian musical number, but half of the film focuses on Mexico; this movie introduces Panchito, a Mexican rooster.
