Ehh Universal/ IOA!

Ok so as I am Disney freak and my son is almost 5 now, we tend to go to the Disney parks. We have passes and try and go often. But we have seasonal passes and they are in black out right now. My husband had a business meeting in Orlando this past Thursday so we alll decided to go up. And made a last minute decision to go to a park on Friday. We went with Universal/IOA. My son had never been and me and the hubby havent been since IOA first opened.

But my goodness, that place is run horribly compared the Disney!
The line just to park was insane! And then we waiting in line for (no kidding) at LEAST 45 minutes for tickets. They had 3... count them...
3 windows open TOTAL! On a Friday afternoon in JULY!
And 2 of them were occupied by South Americans and were standing there the ENTIRE time we were in line so truly there was only one functional window. Only til we got right to the front did a window open up and take us.

THEN... yeah sorry, story is not quite done yet :)
We waiting in line to give our tickets for another 30-40 minutes.
Their fingerprint thing works awful, seemed every single person had to redo it like 3-4 times each before getting in, thus making a ridiculous line and wait.
Now I can see waiting on line this long or longer for a ride, but not to get in

That has NEVER happened to me at Disney.
And to get food was crazy too. They have ONE register at most places.
So the lines were again... silly long.

The park itself was lots of fun... I mean my son isnt tall enough for too many, and only wanted to go to ET in Universal. he actually LOVED IOA. We went on the Flying Unicorn like 4 times! Spiderman made it worth the trip and all the crappy lines early in the day to get in.
ANd I did forget how much I love how they designed the props and ambience of the parks. Especially that Poseidon's Fury. That was beautifully done!
We went to go in, never having gone before, and the lights went off for a second right as we got in line inside and some kids went "woooo!" and my son freaked! So we had to leave... what is that ride like, anyone? Anyone?
A show? We almost bought passes when we came in cause it wasnt that much more but I just really dont see going back very often when we have alot of Disney trips planned in the rest of the year.

So that was my rant on Universal/IOA. All and all we had fun, but they have ALOT to work on!
Nxt time I go will probabaly be when the Harry Potter Wizarding World is finished... THEN I will buy a pass for sure!
:sohappy:

I'm glad that you had a chance to go to Universal. I have never been but I plan to visit in a few years. I am still so hung up on Disney that I can't make myself go anywhere else. :hammer:

Knowing how well Disney does everything, you would think that Universal would make a better effort to get people their tickets and into the park as fast as they can. That really surprised me to hear that.

I'm glad you had fun! So many people go to the parks (Universal or Disney) and rush around and get very frustrated. Universal's a lot different (not good or bad, not worse or better) than Disney.

Thats what happens when you don't have a college program to ensure that things get staffed properly. Just imagine how WDW would look if they weren't able to bring in all those kids and work them nonstop.

Except that they also have about 10 computerized terminals where you can purchase tickets at as well. It takes about all of 5 minutes to get your tickets that way. Sometimes those fingerprint scanners don't work well (and they do annoy me), but I've had similar problems at Disneys scanners too since they've started using them.

I saw them but they said they were for pre-ordered online tickets only. And the whole other side was reserved for guest from the UK only. Like I said we planned it last minute otherwise I would have for sure bought them online and skipped that mess for sure.

haha! Yes maybe they sure get a slave-driving college program going :sohappy:

But yes once we got passed all that, we did have a great time. :)

How's this for a different spin?

We have stayed on site at Universal Studios, Royal Pacific for 2 out of the past 3 years...we absolutely love it...DS 16 and DD 17 now...but the rides are awesome....Spiderman, Hulk, Mummy and the Dueling Dragons are to me the best rides anywhere...and when we can ride repeatedly, we feel like we're VIPS.

We're leaving for Disney next week and ending our trip at US/IOA at Royal Pacific...I am curious to see what my kids think of Disney compared to Universal...I hope to get the courage to post a trip report when I get home...I am secretly hoping they'll fall in love with Disney but right now they're hard-core Univeral/IOA fans.

In addition, I have been planning the Disney part of our trip, which parks, the best time, where to eat etc to maximize our experience> I know from experience with the Universal Express Pass, we just have to show up and have fun...plus no reservation for our favorite restaurants...NBA City, Mararitaville, Hard Rock...we can just go with the flow and eat when and where we feel like.

No it's not Disney, yet it can be a great experience!

Universal is a wonderful experience, up until we found out my wife was pregnant in January we had been to Universal 5 times in the past year due to our great AP passes that were good for two years. Its especially great when you stay onsite due to the unlimited express pass your hotel keys act as.

I've rarely ever had a solid time at Universal, the last two times I went there it was Feb and March. We had to wait in line for everything: Parking 30 minutes, walk 15 minutes from Preferred Slef Park, tickets were not that long, then to get into the park for about 30 minutes, then to get a picture taken for my new annual pass, waited for 45 minutes before they told us the cameras weren't working, waited for 10 minutes for the express pass, got up to the front and told me it was over $60 for 1. Left there waited an hour and a half for The Hulk, then hit up single rider lines the rest of the day. It just took so long for the day to get started, and I hated it. Will I go back again, yes Spider Man and Deuling Dragons are awesome, but everything else there just feels so blah, disorderly, outdated, and expensive(even the food is more than Disney food) that 1 day is usually more than enough for me. However that said, as long as Margaritaville, Spider man, Mummy Returns, DD, and that one restaurant in IOA on the corner as you walk in and are heading towards Seuss Landing are there I will continue to go. I don't really hate it there as much as everytime I go there something just lets me down and everything always seems like a hassle.

I'm sorry some of you didn't have ideal experiences at IOA or US!! Everytime I've gone it's been really great and actually really well staffed. Maybe they were just short employees? I dunno! I do know that I LOVE their fastpass sytem! Staying at the resorts is awesome because unlike Disney where you get a fastpass then wait for 30 mins-5 hours until you get to ride again, you just scan your card and walk right on!! Hopefully if you decide to go back it will be better!!

Funny you mention that.. I had to wait about 15 minutes to scan my ticket at AK this morning :)

Basically same thing happened to me in first week in july in epcot got to the gate and had to wait 30 mins to get it as the machine was not working, so it happens at both disney and universal

Yes, of course. You're going to have issues every now and then any time you have these massive amounts of people trying to get into one place.

didnt have a problem when i went :) queues werent a problem. Got my pre ordered tickets within 5 mins of wondering up to the ticket line.

You should really take advantage of the reserve and collect service.... or fed ex it.
