Eat a Twinkie!

Unintended consequences of legislation/regulations trying to influence individual behavior.

They already lost this customer when they changed the creme filling recipe way back when. Plus, the addition of calorie count and ingredients.

The situation is sad really. People grew up with this stuff. Just another sign of our times.

Growing up my parents didn't buy any twinkies, ding dongs, Suzy Q's....

I only discovered these items when I met my husband who made dinner out of a box of Ho Ho's that his Mom kept in the freezer. It was never love at first bite for me. My hubby will be sad the day this company goes belly up. For no other reason than nostalgia.

yeah, I honestly can't remember that last time that I ate a Twinkie, but every time that I do it just takes me back to childhood snacking at my grandparents.

The situation at Hostess is not unlike the situation at Kodak. The company failed to change with the times. Don't get me wrong, Twinkies and Zingers are the food of the gods, but the stuff is just not good for you. It is fine in moderation but it is far to easy down 1200 calories of Twinkies during and episode of CSI. Their foray into healthier snacks seemed rather limited and not really any healthier than their better tasting original line.

They are the standard-bearer, especially for the chocolate items (Hostess cupcakes, Ho-Ho's, and Ding-Dongs -- which, by the way, should still be called Big Wheels). I saw the ever-changing name for Big Wheels as at least one problem that they had, though. They had a wonderful product, with a great name and logo -- Chief Big Wheel. But they decided it was politically incorrect, and became more generic with the name -- and loss product identity that had been strong.

Too much time spent on political correctness and probably some MBAs making decisions, instead of focusing on the standard-bearing products that they had.

Their chocolate frosting tastes great -- and no other competitor can compare. But it sounds like from posts above about the cream filling that they have even let people tinker with that also.

Anyhow, it seems like sometimes people do not know how to run the company with the products that define their market.

I hope it services, or is bought by a company that gets them back to their roots.

And no one ever said that snacks needed to be healthy. Just good. Tempering your intake is your responsibility. Soon, I guess, we will have to proclaim no Dole Whips because of their sugar and carb content.

Good Old Days

I love Twinkies, Ring-Dings, Mr. Softie ice cream, egg creams, Kinishes, garlic pickles, etc but remember most of us "in those days" were always outside burning calories. I can't tell you how many times I walked the Bklyn Bridge with my friends just to see whom would get there first. We were out in the streets from 9 AM - dinner time, at least in my neighborhood. Now kids can't do that due to the times we live in. Plus most of this "new generations" idea of "workout" is on the computer so these wonderful treats are "harmful" now, in my opinion, but I still enjoyed them and the memories.

Exactly. I would eat Twinkies as frequently as possible, but also walked to school every day, then changed from "school" clothes into "play" clothes, and walked to my best friend's house, and then we would walk over to another friend's house, etc. It was not unusual for me to be a mile or two from home in the afternoon, and a lot further on weekends/vacations.

Yes, the good old days. As a child of the 70's I would only be home enough to grab a snack or a drink if I couldn't find a hose.

Maybe that should be the marketing campaign for Hostess. Everything in the supermarket has gone retro. Soda, cereal etc. They could bring back the old recipes old names and old labels and grab that crowd.

Or maybe bring back the idea of kids being kids... and playing outside. Now, that's a novel idea...

Twinkies were probably made of real food ingredients then too instead of the chemicals and fillers that they consist of now.
