DVD Souvenier Video

During a recent trip, I discovered a DVD for sale in the shop where World Showcase and FutureWorld meet. Eager for new Disney footage after watching the free preview disc to death I got back to my room and popped it in.

I must say that it was a serious disappointment. Instead of offering new glimpses at the parks it seemed like it still had one foot left in the early 90's. In fact, much of the footage was from all my old tapes... You know- the ones with the old couple walking around Epcot Center... From that era. Gheesh, many of the attractions shown had seriously changed. For example, the Universe of Energy was shown in its pre-Ellen form. The scene where Ellen fights the dino was shown, without her! The old T-Rex- Stegosaurus fight had the old colorations. The only thing missing from the tape version was the World of Motion and Horizons. Mission Space was not mentioned, and Test Track was nothing more than footage from a comercial. Imagination was almost completely omitted.

Worse, some of the rides seemed to get the worst possible footage. Peter Pan looks strikingly bad when shown on this disc. It was so bad. people were commenting on it.

With the resources that Disney has, I'm surprised that they don't put as much effort into the DVDs as they do their yearly soundtracks. Given the right equipment, I could do a far better job in a week. Someone with the passion for the "world" should rework the next souvier made...

I agree with you. I have promo tapes dating back to about 1992 and the same footage is in all of them-including the most recent retail DVD. They just tend to arrange the clips in different ways with different music. I bought it in May and it was no different than a couple of other WDW videos I've purchased. I think I actually prefer some of the earlier promo videos to what is currently being offered. I like when they talk to people about different attractions.

hey grim grinner,

i bought the SAME dvd and expect just as much from it as you did, an amazing dissapointment.

what about the pirates of the caribbean footage? sheesh is that old... and the DVD format certainly isn't kind to the old stock disney footage... the grain and quality is beyond poor.

dont get me wrong, i'm a nut for nostalgic vintage videos of disney and what not, but this DVD is sold as a souvineer video - i would expect it to reflect the disney world that was witnessed on the trip when the video was purchased...

i find it really difficult that disney doesn't possess the resources to release a new souvineer dvd each year.. i mean, they already changed the packaging, how difficult is it to change the DVD thats included :)

Sure glad I did not buy it. I had a gut feeling looking at the lack of info on the cover that it would not be very good. Looks like I was right.

However I did buy the DVD "Walt - The Man Behind The Myth" and loved every minute of it.

Ummmmm Glad I did not buy it -- I was looking at it tooo but thought I would wait until next time. Glad I did!

??? Idea-- wouldn't it be nice "If" they could have a vcr/dvd player at the Emporium-- bigger stores, to play tapes/dvds during the day for people to check out. I asked some of the cast members when I was there a few weeks ago and they agreed. Hummmmmm???? Good advertising?? They said they are always getting similar questions-- have you seen this etc?

A little thread drift-- barnum42 Was that the same as the movie in One Man's Dream? Just wondered?

Sorry back to the original question-- Yes, I would think they would use more current footage, what a shame! Thanks for letting us know!!!

The 1980's footage on the parks dvd/video is a disgrace. They really need to update it and do a whole new one with Mickey & Gang as our tour guides.

I have not bought this DVD. But I have gotten the kind you get from the main page. My favorite thing is when they show Epcot without the Epcot on it! :hammer:
