DVC Rental points

We just had some friends return from thier first WDW trip and they loved it of course. We are now in full planning mode for our fall trip.

We are going to attempt to rent DVC points this trip for the very first time. We are searching for Beach Club or Boardwalk for Oct 19-26, 2013.

QUESTIONS:
1) how hard is it to rent DVC points?
2) any issues with doing thiese?
3) Will our purchased park tickets and dining plan be placed on our room card as normal?
4) what is better; Beach Club studio or Boardwalk studio?

Thanks:)

I have never rented and was considering doing it for my next trip, the big issue I see is that you can't really cancel, no matter what so you need to know you will be able to go then and not have any potential issues arise.
I think Boardwalk is supposed to be cheaper.

We're okay with that - we go no matter what ;) The points for BW and BC for our dates are the same; 107. I wish I knew if one was more preferred over the other. We love that area and our favorite park is EPCOT so we are very hopeful that we can get the rental points for our dates.

Can I ask where your renting? I know on Disney David, BW is always less, so if you want I guess that is a barometer, BC would seem to be the more desirable place. I think if your planning on quick service at the resort BC is easier, as BW you have to hit the boardwalk to eat ect.

The Epcot resorts are very tough to get into during Food and Wine. I would not wait very long if that is where you want to stay. We rented points for the first time last trip using dvcrequest. We went in October, and ended up with SS. We didnt book until April, and we were not able to get the Epcot resorts.

It isn't hard to rent points. It may be a bit tougher to get the availability you want. The Epcot resorts are very busy at that time due to Food & Wine festival. Lots of people want to be able to just stroll home at the end of the night. So those tend to go to people who own at BW/BC. And they also tend to book much closer to their booking window. (11 months for BW/BC owners, 7 months for other DVC owners). However, you should be able to get a space at one of the other DVC properties during that time, it may just be SS or OKW. If you do opt for the dining plan, yes that would be placed on the room key. However, the DVC owner needs to do that, not you. Make sure to include that in any transaction you do with the broker to ensure the owner knows that you want it. Tickets, you should be able to get added. The caveat to that is 9 months out, no one knows how far the FP+ program will be into its implementation, so that may not even be an option then. Keep in mind that the reservation is made and controlled by the owner up until the point when you check in. Any changes/requests/etc need to be made by the owner on your behalf.

Great thread. Was also thinking about doing the same thing for our trip to Disney World.. Would prefer to rent DVC points (I'm not a member) and would like to stay in at Bay Lake Tower or Wilderness Lodge Villas in early December. Really want something with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Any feed back on who to use? Disney David or another site?

For anyone who has done this before, is this a cost-effective way of booking our vacation?

I'll take anything.

We are going down on similar dates to when you are looking to go. We booked through David's at the 11 month mark (back in November) and were not able to get a BWV Boardwalk view. We did get a different prefered BWV studio, but again that was almost 2 months ago. While you may have your hearts set on renting DVC points for that area, understand that there may not be much left and you might have to look at staying elsewhere. You have to keep in mind that many DVC members who own at BWV or BCV own there because of F&W.

Thanks for the great responses everyone. Are there DVC studios at Animal Kingdom Lodge?

There are DVC rooms at both AKL buildings, Kidani is all DVC and Jambo which is mixed. Both have pros and cons over the other (i.e. Kidani is usually picked up first except to DTD, Jambo has The Mara, a CS restaurant).

Most of the rental sites are setup fairly similarly. Should be about $13 a point if you go through a broker. You could get points for $7-8 if you rent direct from an owner, but the brokers usually help provide some degree of legal protection.

As far as cost-effective goes, it really depends on what you would be staying in otherwise. For instance, OKW during Peak, March 8 - April 6, a studio would cost you $431 per night direct, or 14/19 points (midweek/weekend). So if you rented points, it would cost you $182/247 at $13 per point. A 2br would be $903 direct, 40/48 point or $520/624 if you rent per night. So you save serious cash over booking direct through Disney. Now if you would have otherwise stayed at POR that same time, that would cost you $211/231 for a standard room. So that may cost about the same as renting points for a OKW studio. Now there is a chance that you could get a discount for that POR room. Even a 10% AAA member discount now makes a POR stay most likely cheaper than OKW point rentals. If you can get a 30% discount, then the mod is an even better deal. But if you need the 2 bedrooms, or would be eating meals in room, then the 2br point rental may indeed work out better. You really would need to look at where you would normally stay otherwise, and compare the numbers. If you find someone you trust renting the points for less than $13, it usually swings it more in the direction of the rentals.

Early December is a becoming a popular time for DVC owners due to the lower point values, and the fact it still has lower crowds than Christmas. So you may want to get the process started soon if you head in that direction.

Thanks for the great responses everyone. Are there DVC studios at Animal Kingdom Lodge?

All the DVC properties have the studio, 1br and 2br, and most have the 3 bedroom as well. Strongly suggest checking out sites like dvcnews for a great rundown on the different properties and what you could expect when you rent.

Also suggest checking out the DVC board here for more info and quick answers to any questions you may have.
