DVC point rental question

If you buy points from somebody else (I've been looking at david's) is it likely to land what I want if booking a month ahead of time? Is that even possible?

It depends on when you are going and the type of room you are looking for. October is pretty booked up as well as December. What dates are you looking at and what type of room?

Sorry, but booking only one month out will likely not be possible at all, depending on the time of year. If you are looking for October, there are no full weeks at any resort. SSR has a few days here and there, but that's about it.

DVC is not really built for last minute (which 1 month or less is) trips. You really need to be able to plan at least 7 months out to get even close to what you want. If you provide more specific information - room type required - studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, etc. and more specific dates, we can look up exact availability for you.

Yeah, I just rented points for February at the boardwalk and couldn't even get the whole week we wanted. Had to wait the list the first 2 days to see if they come through.

But you may get lucky if it's a short trip. I was able to book a studio at AKV a couple trip backs maybe 2 months out for a weekend. But longer the stay the harder it'll probably be. Could always consider split-stays as well.

Good luck!

I was looking at 3 nights in October 23-26th. I already have a value booked but I have a hubby with his heart set on a deluxe (AKL). I've never rented DVC before.

There are no studios available at all for those days. You can get a couple of days in a 1 bedroom standard view on the 24th and 25th, at Kidani, but the cost will obviously be a lot more. There is a also 1 bedroom savannah view available on the 26th. Nothing is available for the 23rd.

We have never looked into renting DVC points for a visit to WDW. I'd like to investigate the idea, but I have absolutely no idea where to start. What is the site everyone keeps referencing to check availability? What are the pros and cons of renting points as opposed to staying at a Deluxe Resort? We have 5 adults and always rent two rooms, so I would still need two units or maybe one 2bd unit if something like that is available.

Thanks.

Actually, there's pretty much nothing available those days at all. The reason is that the first 2 weeks of December are the lowest points needed for a stay, and of course, all of the Christmas decorations are already up. Those dates would pretty much need to be reserved at 11 months out, as they all go very quickly for those 2 weeks. Sorry for the bad news.

I can check availability via the DVC website, but of course, you have to be an owner to login. David's will do a search for you, but I think he charges $95 for it, though that does go towards your rental if you rent from him. Google Davids DVC Rentals.

With 5 adults, you would definitely want to go with a 2 bedroom. The pro for renting is that it is usually much cheaper than paying cash for a room. As an example - you want to stay at Kidani Village in a 2 bedroom Standard View from April 8-14 in 2017. If you reserve through regular Disney CRO, the cost is $7,830 - not including the taxes and all. For DVC members, that same room is 311 points. Since most people state that rentals go for $14 per point, your total cost renting points is $4,354 and there are no taxes or other fees. So you save over $3,000.

If you move down to 2 regular rooms, the Disney cost is still just over $6,100 and you lose the full kitchen, washer/dryer, and extra room that a 2 bedroom has over a studio. The DVC rental would run you about $3,304. If those amenities aren't important, you can save a few bucks.

Check out the DVC forum, plenty of threads about DVC point rentals there. Pros/cons will vary slightly depending on your room type. The room itself is typically furnished similarly to a normal deluxe level room. But you will have at least a kitchenette, and possibly a full kitchen/laundry in room if you go DVC. But you won't get daily mousekeeping unless you pay extra.

I also wanted to add that I use Davids. They seem to be good people. I've only used them once but have another reservation set up. The $95 is refunded if they do not have the dates available, but you can figure out the total cost on their website. The biggest cons is you have to book well in advance, have the funds up front, and a DVC owner is making the reservation on your behalf. So if something scammy happens, you're in trouble. I am confident Davids would refund me if something did happen and my contigency plan would be to find a place off property. I do not believe I have ever heard of scams though. Probably only a higher risk if you are dealing directly with the owner. That is why I use Davids, it costs a little more, but I think it has more security.

I own points and I also have rented both from Owners and a few different 3rd party brokers. Never had an issue renting so far.
To Rent you really need to know 7+ months ahead of time and still be flexible about the room since sometimes things get very full fast.

While it's not too likely, considering that is one of the busiest weeks for DVC (not WDW in general), you can check the DVC Rentalstore's last minute specials on their website. They are set dates, but you never know!
