Dumb Park Guests and their False Sense of Entitlement

So, I had a little situation at the Magic Kingdom tonight.....but more on that in a bit.

It really bugs me that guests feel since they paid for their park ticket, they have the freedom to do as they choose. I am in the parks a lot, and I am seeing it more and more.

Even at the basketbrawl game in Detroit, the guest the through the cup at the player (or the rude fans that sit behind the visitors bench and scream at them the whole game)....what gives them that right?

In 1995, I would at Cedar Point on a river rapids ride similar to Kali. The ride had seatbelts for a restraint, and guest would take them off all of the time and run around in the raft to avoid the water.....why do they think this is ok?

So, on to my situation.

Anyone who knows me personally, knows that I am not a "warm and fuzzy" person, but at the same time I am very polite, respectfull, and sincere.......although I may not always emit the feeling, I am a fairly nice person.

Tonight I was at the Magic Kingdom, and went onto Mickey Philharmagic. Now, just like any other attraction of the same style, the CMs or a recording always states "Move all the way down to the end of the row, do not stop in the middle, fill in all available seats."

So, I pick my row, and I move all the way down, when what do I see, a very large woman and her husband seated right in the middle, with about 12 seats to their right.

I was going to stop next to them, but as many people were still coming into the theater, I did not want to be part of the problem, so I attempted to go around them.....and I stepped on the ladies foot.

Well, you would have thought that I had killed her first born the way she reacted.

Now, typically, I am first to apologize whenever I accidentally bump into someone......but not this time.....I did not even feel bad......I was not the problem, she was.

To take the situation back to its root, if she had moved all of the way down, this could have never occured, but it did occur, and it was her fault.

As I am sitting their, her husbands gets out of his seat and walks the 10 or so seats down towards me to say "I want you to know, you really hurt my wife, she has an ingrown toenail".

Now, if this was really my fault, I would have been somewhat empathetic and apologized.....but it wasn't....the only thing I could say was "You should have moved all of the way down, this would have never happened if you did".

The gentleman then went on to say "you need to be more careful"

Now....I was a bit ticked off, so I sarcastically responded with "Why.....it did it on purpose"

After the show, the gentleman caight up with me to confront me about "stepping on the foot on purpose", to which I responded "I guess sarcasm is lost on you"

After a few more verbal exchanges, the guest actually had the gall to say to me "Well, I am going to call security and report you"

FOR WHAT, FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS?

My only response "Be my guest....go ahead" :drevil:

Amen to that! Instructions are given for a reason! They have no right to complain to you like that when you accidentally step on her foot when YOU are the one following directions.

I would have done the same thing Brad. They didn't move all the way down and a whole bunch of people were still coming in. What were you going to do?

The thought had gone through my mind to REALLY step of their feet, but, as I am polite, even to the obvious idiots, I chose not to.

Just shows you are the bigger person. Instructions are there for a reason. It's that ladys own fault for not following them.

*Makes a note to stomp on a few more feet during next trip* Seriously, unless the theater is virtually empty, have common courtesy and move down. If you don't want to, don't be the first into the theater. Simple as that.

Hi Speck! The problem is that when you made your sarcastic response to the gentleman ("Why?....I did it on purpose") you then made an admission of a criminal act (Battery) on your part. You could be arrested and jailed for such an offense. It's better to step on them and then apologize profusely. Then (while still doing your apology) "accidentally" step on both of them and "accidentally" bump their heads with your elbow. There's an art to it all.

The law states that if the injury is "intentional". That law would have justification if he actually did intend to step on the woman's foot, but his sarcastic comment about doing it on purpose would not be true since it was obviously a mistake. The woman would be at fault for not following the rules stated before and during the period of time entering the auditorium. Thus making it her fault. :D

Speck, I need to hang out with you more lol, you'd keep me sane in that park.

I don't know if this is still the case, but I remember the Unofficial Guide used to say to do just that when someone refused to move all the way down. They also had a recommendation for dealing with people who take flash pictures after being asked not to....Put your hand in front of the lens just as they are taking the picture.

I do agree that it was probably a mistake to tell the husband that you did it on purpose. Because, as you observed, sarcasm is lost on some individuals. Plus, if the situation had escalated and written statements had been taken, the words, "I did it on purpose" would simply be on the piece of paper. Your sarcasm would not be reflected on a written statement.

Having said all that, I agree with you 100% about this feeling of entitlement that people have. My wife and I were on a cruise last year celebrating our anniversary, and we were hanging out in an adults only pool area. There was a women in there with her kid, and she absolutely refused to remove him. She kept saying, "After what I paid for this cruise, I have the RIGHT to take my kid wherever I want!" Making matters worse, the kid was an obnoxious screaming brat. We went up to her and said, "Ma'am, after what WE paid for this cruise, WE have the right to make use of the facilities we paid for...such as this adults only area. And you know what? Royal Caribbean agrees with us!"

Unfortunately, this is not a theme-park related problem and not an US-only problem either. The way things are going, the next generation is in for a very bumpy ride, cause the kids sure can't be getting good examples from all the crap that's been going on every day around them.

Depends on how busy the park is. If they are expecting a full house they say to move all the way to the end of the row.

Stomp away Speck....Hey that could be a new forum dance - "Do the Speck Stomp!"

I too have trodden on the odd foot when somone decided the rules did not apply to them. I have also trodden on a leg when some moron sat down on the floor in the Dinosaur presow with their legs fully out in pitch black with guests still filing in. Rather than wait for them to trip up someone less able to take the fall I clipped their legs as I stumbled past :drevil:

Good for you Speck !!!! Even tho it wasn't intentional :animwink: she got what she deserved for not following instructions. Hope her foot hurt the rest of the nite. Having a bad toe doesn't give anyone the right to stop in the middle and mess up the traffic flow. I will never understand why people can't follow simple instructions.

While the woman had no noticable accent, the man was British.

Yea to you Speck! What I hate most is not following the rules. Rules are there for a reason, so people do not get hurt. She didn't follow the rules and she got hurt. I am a rule follower and am raising a son to be a rule follower as well. Oh yeah, and don't get me started on people who feel they are entitled to something just because they think they are.
