During the WDW Marathon, the course takes you on Bear Island Road and past the Waste plant and Horticulture Area. The former smells REALLY bad and is enormous. There's really not a lot to see but if you like foul odors, man, it's THE place to go. Sure made me run faster....If you want a safer "not-quite-authorized" backstage drive, drive south from the Floridian and hang a right onto Bear Island Road before you get to the Car Care Center. Eventually you'll pass the waste water treatment plant, and I believe a vehicle maintenance area before dumping out onto Western Way. (You can only go south on Bear Island because at the Western Way end there's a gate to restrict access, but if you approach from the north, it'll open when it senses your vehicle)
Until they added Western Way, you could continue down a little farther past the Tree Farm until you dead-ended at the back entrance to Animal Kingdom (when you had to play "lost tourist" and make a U-turn), but now you can't get that far.
Or, you could just loop up and around behind the MK on Floridian Way/World Dr...
Or drive east on Vista Blvd past Fort Wilderness, continue past the turnoff for Bonnet Creek Parkway (where you'd turn to go down to POR and POFQ), and drive past the oh-so-exciting telecommunications building and central receiving dock (and I think a central laundry). Actually saw that on a WDW bus MANY years ago heading for Downtown Disney, when our driver missed the turn onto Bonnet Creek and had to cut over to Buena Vista at Live Oak Lane.

A good few years back I missed the turn for the Contemporary and ended up going straight across the next junction as at that point I wasn't concentrating and was thinking where I could u-turn. Anyhow I was then on the road alongside the monorail track leading to the monorail maintenance station and had the back of Space Mountain directly to my left. I figured that I almost certainly shouldn't be there but excitement and curiosity got the better of me and I thought "I'll go on a bit as there's been no barriers to stop me etc and I'm genuinely here by mistake so they'll hopefully understand if I get pulled".
I was rather nervous as I drove on but just followed the road all the way round as it basically circled the outskirts of the MK. There were a number of gated turn off entrance points to various parts of the MK along with the monorail maintenance station to see, but mostly just trees and the chain fence surrounding the park. Interestingly there were some signs for the I4 back there which seemed a bit odd as I thought if it was a cm only road they'd know their way around anyway?
Anyhow it eventually brought me round the back of the Polynesian and joined the exit from the MK parking lot but I'm still unsure to this day if I broke any laws or not or what the consequences would have been had I been caught?

Negative. It's a public access road.
Those signs are to guide wayward drivers such as yourself toward where they need to go. Even though it's not an area where Guests typically go, it's a good idea to keep them moving in a helpful direction rather than giving them zero signs and letting them take a couple blind turns and end up lost somewhere off of Reams Road...
Most times you know you're getting to the edge of where they expect most Guests to be when the signs start pointing you toward "All Guest Areas".
And you didn't break any rules or laws, as another poster said. In fact the entrance past the MK cast parking and monorail barn is the fastest way onto property for most any local resident who lives north of property, even if it's not the most "magical" entrance route.

If you'd done something illegal, then Disney security would be spending 99% of their time dealing with illegal guests who get lost on property. Our first two visits to WDW I mistakenly turned onto World Way when we were going home, thinking that was the road we came into WDW on. Kept saying "this doesn't look like the road we came in on" and boy, was I surprised and embarrassed when we ended up at the entrance to the Magic Kingdom.
I will admit for the first time visitor (and I still get lost), driving around WDW can be daunting. Which one reason why I stay on-site and let Disney do the driving.
