Driving - Where to Stop

Hi, I just found this site so I am new to the community.

We are going in May, myself, husband and two sons (3 and 8). We live in Northern Virginia, about 45 minutes outside of DC and plan to stop in Savannah, GA.

Can anyone recommend a hotel they have stayed at, as well as restaurants or other things to do the following morning. We would like to see the area and get back on the road around noon time.

Thanks!

You have to give us more. What are you looking to see? With two kids, one day won't give you much. You'll get through one park probably, if that. There are 4 theme parks, water parks and a lot more. With two kids I'd recommend Magic Kingdom. It's classic Disney. Staying offsite is cheaper, but you seem to be more engulfed in the magic if you stay on site. They have value, moderate and deluxe resorts. There are quick service restaurants for burgers and pizza and sit down restaurants and even character dining. Those require a reservation. Give us more about what you want.

If I were you, I would get a good night sleep, have a good breakfast and get back on the road toward Disney. I think that as long as you stay at a chain motel....Hampton Inn etc, you will be fine as far and comfort and cleanliness goes. Enjoy your drive and your time in the parks. Your kids are a great age to make the most of disney. :cat:

I agree with Tinkerbell, as far as a hotel. They can be pretty expensive so find one of the chains. I like to stay in Country Inns and Suites when I travel. You can't begin to see much of Savannah in 1 morning. I would recommend going down to River Street and walking down by the river and shops. there are also several good restaurants to eat at in that area. Enjoy your trip.

We stayed at or near the 95 exit to savanah twice. It may have been a hampton inn or, more likely, a springfield suites, a favorite of ours (5 in our group). Funniest time when we asked for the nearest starbucks. The look of disgust and response of "we ain't got no starbucks, this ain't no boston" is an indelible memory of one trip.

Thank you everyone. mr_braver23 I was referring to Savannah, GA. We already have everything planned for our 8 day stay in Florida. Was just looking for suggestions in the Savannah area. Has anyone ever done one of the boat rides in the morning?

As for where to stay, I don't really have anything for you, but I think you should check out The Pirates House Restaurant if you get a chance. The food is great, and your boys would probably love it. I have gone there a few times since I was a kid and I still enjoy it.

When was this? There are probably 4 within a mile of there now. ;)

Are you able to stay in Savannah on the way and see sights then? My thought is that your kids (and maybe the adults) will have little or no interest in seeing anything other than WDW. Likely they will be chomping at the bit to get there.
On the way back, however, the stop in Savannah ay be a welcome distraction from the gloom of leaving WDW and the loooooong drive back. That drive will seem 2x as long as it did going down.
I agree with the posters who say to maybe just find a chain hotel, maybe get dinner in Savannah, but then just get a good night rest and get back on the road.

I will have to look into The Pirates House Restaurant, that sounds like a fun name :)

I know they will be excited to get to Disney, but we are staying off site and can't check in until 4pm. We won't be at the parks until Sunday, we will be stopping Friday into Saturday. On the way back we will have to drive straight through with no stopping, other than bathroom breaks, gas and food. I think right now they are most excited because our vacation home has a screened in pool in the back and they will have constant access to a pool, or so they think :) I would rather drive straight through to get there and stop on the way back, but with how much we have planned during our stay our final day will have to be a straight through drive home.
