Driving From Texas-Houston Area

have not developed a plan on yet. We check into POP on Sunday. Debating whether we should leave Friday night and drive all night and arrive on Saturday and stay in a cheap hotel and do Downtown Disney, or wait until Saturday. If we do that we'd probably drive as far as we could on Saturday and then sleep and drive the rest Sunday losing a day in the parks.

Going to have a 7yo and a 2yo and 3 adults to drive. One is a night nurse so driving through the night will not really be a problem. I almost think it's better to leave Friday night and if Saturday is rough we can always stop before we get there and drive the rest on Sunday anyway.

Has anyone else done this drive? How long? I'm estimating 17-18 hours. Any cool diversions along the way?

While not quite as far, we normally drive from Thibodaux, LA. It takes us about 12 hours. (takes us 5 to get to houston). We would leave around 12 midnight and drive all night most of the times, arriving at the park and going for a little while.

My suggestion is to leave Friday night and drive straight thru. With three adults should not be a problem but always have a spotter up with the driver. The kids should sleep for the most part of the trip but stop for bathroom breaks and coffee as needed.

We also stop in Ocala for breakfast at Cracker Barrel. Refreshes us for the rest of our journey. Only about one hour to Disney!!!

Bring the kids movies or video games to keep them occupied. Our kids are great in the car!

We actually did this last week, just my dad and I. We drove from Houston all the way to Pop the next day. We left at like 1 or 2 pm here, and got to Pop at like 6 or 7 am ish, I forgot. A lot of fun. But if you have little kids, it may be better to stop.

We did this in 2010 with our 2yr old. We stopped in Quincy I think it is, just outside of Tallahassee for an overnight stay at a Holiday Inn Express, breaking the drive into two segments each way.

We are Houston area - made this drive last August and will likely be doing it again in November since air is INSANE! We also found the drive to be pretty enjoyable- minus the sad drive home (although not so bad since we stayed at the Beau Rivage on the way back:D) and the stretch from Pensacola to Talahassee

We drove to Daphne, AL on day 1 and spent the night at a Microtel there and then drove to the Orlando area on day 2. We are in suburbia south of Houston and had some car drama, so we didn't hit the road until about 9:30a...which isn't such a bad thing since I fight Houston traffic enough- I don't need to be doing it again at the start of my vacay. We made a few stops along the way 1) potty break near Beaumont 2) DH wanted to take the grand tour of Lake Charles  so we drove around for a while, found a place for lunch, found out it was closed for repairs:rolleyes:, found another place for lunch, etc. (edit- I remeber, we also stopped in Grosse Tete before heading over the Atchafalaya to see if the tiger was out) 3) we hit a lot of traffic going into Baton Rouge and it was about that time my contacts were going nuts- so we had to pull over at some point after the bridge and I changed out my lenses at a fine place called the Whiskey Bin  4) We stopped in Biloxi for a bathroom break...and then it was on to our first night destination on the other side of Mobile Bay. I want to say it was around 6:30 or 7 when we arrived.

I think we probably left about the same time on day 2 from Daphne...mainly b/c we weren't spending our first night in the Orlando area at Disney...i.e. no rush. We made our first stop east of Pensacola for a restroom break and to let our girls run around, we stopped for lunch in Talahassee, then we stopped in Gainesville and spent a good hour driving around since I used to live there, after getting back on 75 and then exiting onto the Turnpike- we stopped so DH could get a drink- somewhere not too far out of the Orlando area...I know we were east of the Okahumpa rest area. We hit the area around Universal around 5:45pm. Traffic was thick so it was about another 30-45 min before we made it to our lodging for that nt on Irlo Bronson (3 mi from the maingate). We stayed onsite for the rest of the trip- which was only a few minutes drive from where we were- so it wouldn't have made a huge travel time difference at that point had we just gone straight into WDW.

Basically- while we made a number of stops just for the heck of it- every travel reference I used to plan the trip estimated that each leg would be about 8.25-8.50 hrs. The travelmath website says it's about 14.5 hrs from Houston to Orlando, but of course that doesn't factor in basic stops for gas and quick meals...so I think 16-17 is a better estimate for overall time- even if broken up over two days. Obviously, we would have made MUCH better time without all of the little stops- but we felt the road trip would be more fun if we stretched it out with a few fun things to do vs. trying to get the best time possible. Not the right approach for everyone- but it was good for us. :)

Your guesstimate is probably right on the money. About 16 hours from the Woodlands to Disney, and if you are coming from Aggieland, just add another hour to an hour and a half. My daughter and my son just made it from the Woodlands to here in 16 hours, and we live about 20 minutes from the MK. This was just stopping for gas and fast food with one stop in Pensacola at the Cracker Barrel.

We always drive. Were from Southeast Texas and it takes us right about 14 to 15 hours. The first two years we broke the trip up stopping in Tallahasse overnight. The key is to get through Louisiana early! The later it gets the more 18 wheelers on the road and they BLOCK traffic the whole way thru. Once you hit Mississippi it's smooth sailing! The drive from there is about 4 hours. We usually check in and go to Epcot that day. Last year we decided to drive straight thru left at 5am arrived at the Pop around 9pm. It wasn't bad until that last hour and a half. We were all READY TO GET OUT OF THE CAR!!

Yes when going through Louisiana cut off on I-12 In Baton Rouge and not I-10 through New Orleans.

I live on the outskirts of New Orleans and it takes us about 11 hours or so to get there.

What?! You're kidding me! Thibodaux?! Really?! We lived in the general New Orleans area for a good 10 years or so. Hubby worked at Monsanto in Luling. Some of our closest, dearest friends live in Des Allemands & Raceland! Very cool!

I'm with you! Let the kids sleep and truck-it as much as possible during the night. You can make the best time when you don't have a bazillion potty-stops and I'm-hungry's going on.:lol:

Southeast Texas??? Geez! Where at?! We're in Nederland (although our address says Port Arthur:lookaroun).

YES! Time it so you get thru Baton Rouge avoiding weekday rush hour or you'll be in for a real looooong treat. Baton Rouge is a major cluster! I think 14-15 hours from SE Texas sounds about right. We stop in Pensacola at my Gramma's to visit and stretch out a bit so that's our break.

We left in the wee hours (2 or 3 a.m.) last September, spent maybe 2 hours at my Gramma's house, and pulled into the Hampton in Clermont around 5/6-ish in the evening if I recall. It wasn't so terrible but definitely a tiring drive. Especially with smaller kids, I'm a huge fan of driving when they're sleeping. We always make better time that way. If you have a night-driver you should be golden.

Whether or not to stay on-property for that first night is a toss-up, really. Yeah, you're going to crash early so maybe saving a few bucks off-property feels like the thing to do. But then packing up to move the next morning sorta blows. If you're pushing all the way down it makes sense to go ahead and check-in where you're going to be so you don't have to unpack, repack, unpack. We only did it because we had a free night to burn on points and the added night on the front end at the WL would've been a chunk more to spend.

I have driven from Houston to Orlando a couple of times non stop. Its a long long day, but it can be done. Whatever the mapping software says is the drive time add about an hour (for gas and restroom stops. If you stop to eat, add two), don't forget you also lose an hour when you hit the Eastern Time Zone. I find that the hardest part of the trip is the panhandle of Florida once you go through Pensacola.

Generally will stay offsite the day of the travel because you can get a better rate. Last time, I drove and the rest of the family flew in. The morning after the drive, I checked into the resort and hi-tailed it to Kona for some Tonga Toast and Coffee.:slurp:
