Could be for any number of reasons. It does not matter where it is located, it could be 10 feet away or 10,000 miles away. CA had to have some benefit over FL. Maybe available server/rack space, maybe an existing employee on site that had free hours in their scheduled, maybe extra power/space/cooling that could handle the new load (That is a HUGE factor). Could be any number of reasons.

Doesn't mean it didn't cause some issues though... there was (and still is occasionally) enough latency to have the next portal display time out so it closes before you know where to go. Fortunatly you can just way your key at again and the portal you're suppose to go to is displayed.

Why would someone hack Sony Pictures and not only steal data but unleashed a destructive virus that killed almost all their windows based machines. They literally had to replace hundreds of PCs.
Because the whole point of the attack was to hurt Sony Pictures. They're not going to have payment processing on the scale of a Target or Home Depot. Stealing individual identities is a bigger, more complicated process that getting something like credit card information and processing payments. Also, data was stolen, records and films which have been released.

I love it when my network guy tells me that the bandwidth/latency is more than fine to support moving such and such a service halfway across the company only to fire it up and watch the tickets come piling in about X,Y&Z working because it's not fast enough. And all management heard was cost savings due to rack space being available who then complain when I hand em an invoice for a bigger network pipe. Sigh.....

It was just last year that they relocated the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom servers offsite to a data center in California.

I think you have that backwards, the servers were in CA where the game was built and they were migrated to FLA so they could be administered and maintained easier. That is straight from the managers running the game that I had daily contact with during the period it was being moved.

With the equipment the Company has in place to stop someone from running a truck bomb into the backstage area I would think they have put the same protective systems in place to secure their MM+ and customer data but the engineers never know what they don't know until someone shows them what they don't know. Huge liability for a company built on selling a dream if the dream gets destroyed by a terrorist act.

Well that was what the fellow who was calibrating the portals as well as the Xmas shop Socerers cast the week I was there last year told me along with profuse apologies as it kept misfiring.
