Does your WDW fandom not fit your known tastes?

People are often surprised to learn that I am a Disney freak. Just yesterday, a co-worker raised his eyebrows at me when he saw the Spaceship Earth wallpaper on my computer monitor.

Perhaps it's because they know that I am usually very cynical about anything that is manufactured for public consumption, or anything that is corporate. I am an artist by trade, and in school we were always taught that personal expression was the goal of all art. Since DISNEY is a company, and apparently not the work of any one artist, it was hammered into us students that DISNEY was everything we as artists should be fighting against.

Or perhaps people are surprised because most of the movies and shows I enjoy are a lot edgier, more "adult", than what DISNEY offers.

To the first point, I have to argue that DISNEY *is*, in a way, the work of one artist -- Walt Disney himself. His ideas and beliefs have been carried on in the works of the Imagineers. They haven't always been successful, but hey, even great artists are sometimes unable to remain consistent in their own work. The DISNEY spirit has been the source of much creative inspiration for me when I've been tapped for ideas.

To the second point, yes, DISNEY does not seem to fit in with my typical entertainment tastes. I love violent action flicks, hardcore science-fiction movies, and independent fare that would have no place in a DISNEY park. That speaks to the adult in me. But at the same time, there will always be the child in me who visited WDW with his parents again and again, and longs for recreating that innocence.

Now that I am expecting my first child, I expect the child-like aspect of me to start moving to the forefront, and I welcome it with open arms.

Is there anyone else here whose WDW fandom does not seem to fit your personality?

I am a 40-something year old Beer guzzling, Tattoo wearing, Hard Rock Guitar playing, Iron pumping ,Harley riding 230 pound Hairy chested 5 O'clock shadow sporting, contact sports playing get-out-of-my way-or-I'll-Run-your-butt-over kinda guy.

But when I go to Disney World, I'm as giddy as a school boy . :) :D  :sohappy:  :p

I think that is one of the best ways to sum it all up.

Whenever I talk about my enjoyment of Disney lots of people ask if I watch the films with my kids. I have to point out that I am my own kid, that I have never bred.

Having just returned from my 12th trip to Disney I again had a lot of people questioning my sanity.

Well, since I've often been asked if I live in a fairytale world ( ) I guess my love of all things Disney fits me very well.
All my family & friends know about it and have learned to deal with it.

Too many "cultured" people look at Disney as catering to the lowest denominator, and not up to their level of emotion.

My response has been that it does work to emotion - like Pop Art does - and that they don't get it because they are looking for something that makes them feel different from everyone else and somehow wiser and more experienced than everyone else. But disney is about those basic emotions we had as a kid before we were "taught" the correct way to look at art, and is about belonging and feeling part of something else. IT's their training about what art is supposed to be that is letting them down.

Curious to see if this works for anyone else - I have had only lukewarm results with it, but I like the argument!

To the first point, I have to argue that DISNEY *is*, in a way, the work of one artist -- Walt Disney himself.

Walt considered himself an entertaininer--a storyteller first and foremost. Animation was simply the medium he worked in. An artist engaged in self expression has different motives, and therefore produces a different product, than an artist engaged in entertaining an audience.

Not that one is better than the other...indeed, there is a good deal of crossover between the two. The self-expressive artist hopes that an audience will appreciate his or her work, and the entertainer's work involves a great deal of self-expression.

They are two sides of the same creative coin. For either side to denounce the other as "wrong" or somehow bereft of value is like the "heads" side of the coin telling the "tails" side that HE is the valuable part. A double-headed quarter isn't worth 50 cents; it isn't even worth 25.

You should feel free to be an expressive artist AND appreciate the work of an entertainer whose work strikes a chord with you, for whatever reason. And if it surprises folks that you're a Disney fan...well, the surprises are what make people fascinating to me.

If you could figure someone out completely at first glance, there'd be little need for self expression among us artists at all.

i am 14. every kid in my school class knows i love disney. some find it a little odd. some dont care. but honeslty i dont care. i have been going to wdw for 14 years. (yah i have been going to wdw since before i was 1) so i love wdw more than anywhere else in the world.
and when you think about it Walt Disney changed the world. he gave happiness to all people world wide. with movies and parks. i dont think any other one man has done something as large as Walt Disney did.

I've been going to Disney since I was born and my dad's been going since the place opened. It's something I've grown up with so it's not really surprising to people that I love it.

The only bad thing about growing up as a Disney addict is everything else seems so dull. If I go to a theme park for the first time it's almost always a disappointment because I'm comparing it to Disney (with the exception of Islands of Adventure which I loved when I went!). I feel like such a snob sometimes because a friend will brag that they went to "six flags" or whatever and I'm look "oh, that's umm...nice". We went to Hawaii when I was 11 and I was bummed about it because I wanted to go to Disney.

I guess what surprises people is that we can afford it. We are a lower income family (hubby is E-5 in the military) but I purposely don't buy a lot of expensive things throughout the year just so I can have enough money to have a good time in Disney. And I'm always trying to make the next vacation beat the last one! I just started my own business so that's helping out with our yearly Disney budget a ton. I want to be a DVC member so badly but just can't afford it yet no matter how hard we try! But then again I'm only 22. We have many years ahead us left!

I'm rambling....

I'm that weird Disney guy

People just don't get it. I'm a Financial Officer, responsible for a 5 1/2 million dollar budget here at work, so everyone thinks of me as the "boring bean counter" type of person.

They walk into my office, which is decorated pretty much 1/2 sports, 1/2 Disney. The looks I get from my people seeing my various Disney stuff (like the Mickey kite I have up near the ceiling) get some of the strangest looks, esp. from people who don't know me. Like Barnum42,

Whenever I talk about my enjoyment of Disney lots of people ask if I watch the films with my kids. I have to point out that I am my own kid, that I have never bred.

They do seem a bit puzzled (but also relieved) that I'm not warping some poor kid's mind with the Disney obsession I have...

I'm a Project Manager for a Commercial Construction Company. Currently I am managing a $6 million addition to a hospital, but in the middle of all the contracts, legal disputes, letters, and job-site visits, I still manage to get on here every day and read and post :sohappy:

Being in construction, you'd assume I'm a gruff, "don't care about nothin" type of person, but I am a Disney freak! My co-workers in the office say, "You're going down there AGAIN?! God, I went once and that's enough!"

Oh well, I like it so I go! I mainly go to escape reality of all this for a week

I have been waiting for a topic such as this.

I have been a Disney fanatic since I was 1. My fiancé' didn't believe it until he saw the super 8 home movies of me and there was the cake and plates all Mickey. :sohappy:

I also have a lot of Disney items on my desk at work. When I told my coworkers I am taking vacation in June they ask "Are you going back to WDW again?" Of course I say! Where else can you be a kid and have fun! They all laugh.

On my last visit to the Magic Kingdom my Fiancé' Paul and I were walking from tomorrow land towards the Castle. All of a sudden he took off running saying Oooooooooohhhhhhhhh! When I finally caught up to him I saw a line with a little girl, little boy, little boy, Paul, little girl and a little girl. There he was waiting for his chance to meet Chip and Dale. It was so funny to see a grown man in his 30's act as if he was four waiting to see his favorite characters. When it came for Paul to have his picture taken with them, Chip came over and pulled me into the picture and went tisk tisk to Paul. It was so cute. The CM took our picture and all Paul could talk about was being scolded by Chip and Dale.

Have a magical day!

I find that Disney (Websites, Parks, Movies) are an escape for me.
I work is a fairly high-pressure job and have to be serious most of the time. I also deal with some heavy decision. Not a lot of fun.
It's nice to enjoy some nice, fun, simple things in life.

Everyone who knows me knows that I am a Disney freak. People laugh at me since I keep going back to WDW for more.

That's why I just accepted a job there on Tuesday. I'm relocating from Atlanta to work in shared services.

Now, suddenly, the people who laughed at me want to give me their resumes.

:D

Hi there. Kindly don't post in all caps....it gives off the impression that you are screaming. Also, please take the time to write out words. I have noticed on this (and a few other threads) that your typing is a little hard to read for those of us who don't know what all your abbreviations mean.
Thank you so much for your consideration:)

I don't know if I qualify as a Disney Freak like most. I am definitely a WDW obsessive person and I haven't visited yet. I went to DLP two years ago for a couple of days and absolutely loved it.

When I talk about my upcoming trip, everything thinks it is for my wife, when really I am the one who can't wait.

And yes, like several on the board, the people I work with would be very very surprised.
