My family is booked for a disney vacation second week in Dec 2018 at pop century (we booked it Nov 2017).. We were thinking about changing our reservation to stay at the campgrounds with a full hookup site. All camp sites were available, until one day at the end of Jan and now NOTHING is available.
I did research on the history of discounts from the past few years and notice discounts for stays starting 10/7 - 12/24 will come out in June or July.
Then, I decided to see when the campsite is booked week by week starting in July. from July to October 7th I can get my choice of campsites...starting 10/7 -12/24 they are all booked. I found it strange that 10/7 date came up in all my research and i ban reserve anything until 10/7.
I have a strong suspicision that disney is holding these sites until the discounts are released but i am not sure why.
Has anyone noticed this before....does Disney hold rooms for discount releases? I can't figure out why...so people booking early book the more expensive rooms???
Any insight would be helpful.

Why would Disney hold back a full priced reservation so they could mark it down?

My guess is people are booking the campgrounds as throwaway reservations and may or may not cancel closer to the date.
my guess is they are blocking the "less expensive" until the discounts come out so people buy the more expensive first. this is just a guess

I have seen some evidence that Disney might do this to fill up particular resorts before others, but I have never been able to get a concrete yes or no answer on the subject, so take that for what it is worth.

However, when it comes to the campsites, I can't see any reason for them to hold back on those. If you are searching for campsites at rack rate with no promotions and coming up with zip, odds are they are booked.

I just checked randomly, I see availability in October, but nothing but tent sites in early December... did you try breaking your trip into smaller pieces? i.e. 1 or 2 nights at a time? sometimes that works better.

Have you called Disney to see if they can book for you? When we went to Disneyland we were looking for a specific room. I couldn’t get the room type I wanted for the full trip. I called and explained my request. They had some rooms held for a convention so they were showing as full but the company hadn’t paid for the rooms so they were able to release one to me. I think sometimes the agents have the ability to use pixie dust you can’t get yourself when booking online.

I don't' see any reason why they would hold them back. But out of experience, holidays at the campground is BUSY. Often most of December and October is full since there are a lot of campers decorate their sites etc...Not sure if that's the case in this situation. I would def give them a call just to see what they can do if they can do anything.

I cannot possibly overstate the amount of money Disney makes off of holding deposits on room reservations. With that in mind, I can't imagine any circumstance where it would benefit them to hold rooms back.

I thought that too when I was trying to book the contemporary, yet the rooms never became available. Its quite possible that when you looked the last time at the campgrounds, there was no availability because people reserved them.

The campsites fill up pretty quick, people have been known to book a site in order to get the DDP, 108+10 for ADR's and the 60 day FP+ date but never stay at the site. They rent houses close by.

There are folks who stay at the campground for months at a stretch ( which boggles my mind, but its true), it is not unusual at all for it to fill up , particularly in the cooler months
