Do you miss the disney resort rooms?

The one thing keeping us from buying into DVC is that we will miss POR. I understand that you can use your points to purchase nights at any resort on property, but how many people have done this?

If you only stay at the DVC resorts, do you feel like you are missing something from your visits?

If you purchase nights in the regular resorts with your points, do you think the value is there?

As we live so far away from orlando, we wouldn't use a mini kitchen and would want to use DDP for food. Has anyone used DDP with their DVC stay?

Yes, yes, many questions! I just have this nagging feeling that we will buy the dvc during our next january trip and I really would like to feel comfortable with it.

I know where you're coming from. That was a fear for me too.
But I have to tell you, the rooms and the resorts are absolutely fantastic.

One thing of note - I still go to regular resorts, mostly on weekends. I find the point differential for Friday and Saturday make it worthwhile to still grab a room at POR or my favourite, DAKL for the weekend then move back to a DVC on weeknights.

I know some people find it a hassle to move - but I love trying out different experiences. Even when I didn't have DVC I'd generally stay at multiple resorts. With the AP discounts, I'd rather spend $109 a night at POR than 20 points or more at DVC.

Well, we have four kids and we bought DVC becasue of the rooms. There's no right or wrong answer here....it's VERY personal. You really need to try the rooms at DVC to see if you like it. I always tell people that once you try a one bedroom unit at Old Key West, you'll never stay in another Disney hotel again...they're that nice, in my view.
Hope this helps

POR is our favorite mod resort too. We stayed there with a great postcard rate ($77 incl tax) once after buying DVC because we were low on points. I wouldn't use points to stay there because as you wondered, the value isn't there. We only use our points at DVC resorts. We still prefer the DVC resorts because of their locations and amenities. We used DDP on our last trip and it worked well for us. It was $37 per day per adult.

I have to admit we sometimes do.

When we have the bug to stay at a non-DVC resort, we will usually just rent off our points for that year and use the cash for the room.

ditto!

Interesting and true point about missing the resorts you've come to love. (We've stayed at POR, POFQ, CB) But we love our DVC, it's beautiful, and I think it's true what another poster said that it's a personal preference.

Great to hear that you are going to the Open House. Smart move to already plan ahead.

My boyfriend and I both work for DVC, because we love DVC the program and the resorts.

Before we knew about DVC we each had a different favorite. Mine in fact was Riverside. Then we stayed at the Poly, I had a tough time deciding between those two. I then found out about DVC - joined the team and joined the Club with my parents. We stayed at Old Key West, they LOVED IT. They too felt Riverside was their favorite, after staying at OKW they had a new favorite.

After I stayed at Saratoga that became my new favorite. You see that is one of the best things about DVC - you can always try something new, but still have the flexibity to go back to an old favorite.

After you get all the info at the Open House you will see that the best use of the points is at DVC resorts, however, the moderate resorts are still a pretty good value.

If you have any questions PM me, I will do my best to answer them. If yo uhave any question about the Open House that is my expertise, since that is my role, to schedule an Open House for Guests.

I know exactly what you mean, and it was also POR for me. I loved POR, and I was sure I'd miss it if we joined DVC. Finally, I figured "Well, I can still go there sometimes". But once we joined, I had no desire to go back. Last year, I did stay at POR one weekend, to save points, and all I could think was "I missed this?" And 4 years ago, I never thought I'd say that. I know it's probably hard to believe, but that's what happened to me.

Honestly, for me, I don't feel like I am missing anything, but maybe that's because before we bought into the DVC we generally stayed at the Value resorts or Wilderness Lodge so I don't know how the Mods are. Now we get to stay at WL more than we could have before and sometimes we even still stay at the values for a day or two depending on points, availabilty at DVC or even just wanting to hang out there. I guess it just depends on what you really like, but the DVC resorts to me are great because we have 2 kids and the kitchen really makes a huge difference for us. Plus we get to stay at places that we wouldn't have stayed at otherwise.

We used points for 2 nights at GF, but honestly we prefer the 1 BR villas at DVC resorts over regular resort rooms, not to mention, the villa generally is less points than the other resorts. You still get the ambience of the resort too, such as Beach club or wilderness lodge as examples.

The solution, if you can afford it, is to buy into DVC, use the DVC membership to get a cheaper annual pass, and then use the passholders' discount to tack on a few extra nights on your vacation (OR a seperate vacation later in the year) to stay in the resort of your choice. Some people ask "Well then, why buy into the DVC?" My argument, after kicking them in the tender vittles, :) is to remind them that even if they buy into a traditional time share at some point, there's no reason why they couldn't also pay to go somewhere else after their points or time in their timeshare is used for the year, right? And like I always remind people, the prices of staying in a Disney resort probably aren't going to get cheaper, so if you plan on spending many vacation in WDW, DVC is worth considering.

Just for anyone's curiousity the room rates go up an average of 10-15% per night each and every year.

(bring in the people saying - well ya Dani but the annual dues for DVC go up)

Yes, the Annual Dues go up, but since our inception in 1991, they are changed at a MUCH lower rate than the room rates.

But I am not here to sell you on it... I'm here to sell the Open House ;) Just kidding, I'm not at work, but if I was...
