Do You Have a Sports Superstition?

I saw one of the Bud Light commercials on TV a little bit ago, and if you don't know, they are about sports superstitions. This got me thinking how many people actually have these superstitions.

As you may know, I'm a huge Green Bay Packers fan. Back in the 2010 NFL season, the Packers had lost a couple games in a row and needed to win their final two games of the regular season to make it into the playoffs. It was the weekend after Christmas, and I had gotten a Packers shirt. I wore that shirt for the next game against the Giants, and we ended up dominating them. I wore it again the next week against the Bears, and we beat them, too. We were in the playoffs. I then wore that shirt for the wild card round, divisional round, championship game, and the Super Bowl. We won all of them. I still didn't think much about it. Then when the 2011 season started, I wore that shirt simply because I liked it. We won again. I continued to wear that shirt each game day, and we continued to win. At some point I realized that the Packers had won every game since I started wearing that shirt. Now, I really didn't become superstitious about it as I'm not a superstitious person, I just kind of thought it was cool. We eventually ended up losing after a 22 game winning streak, and yes, I was wearing the shirt. So that ultimately broke any hint of superstition that I had.

So, do any of you have any sports superstitions?

Unless I am going to the game, I don't wear any of my teams apparel that day. I don't open any news stories regarding the team on game day. I normally try to not visit any team specific website's either.

I did find that I had a pair of underwear that I had worn when I went to the game and the team won each time. So those became a part of my game day "uniform"(Yes, they were washed in between...gross!!!)

Also, during 2005 when the White Sox were marching their way to the 2005 World Series Championship I was watching the game up in my office. Which meant I was sitting in my desk chair watching the game on a 32" old fashioned TV and not my 50" Plasma. Well, we won that game, so I watched the next up there and the next, etc. Soon it became my thing to go up there for game time, move the chair to the exact same spot, arms in same position, and watch. During the actual World Series games I was a statue up there. Fast forward to 2010 and the Blackhawks were making their run to their first of 2 Stanley Cups in 4 years and I watched the first game of the playoffs downstairs on the big screen since we had moved to another house and my superstition was for baseball and not hockey. The game wasn't going very well and we were losing in the middle of the 2nd period. I decided at that point to get back upstairs into the new office and back on that chair watching the same TV. It worked. So I spent the rest of the playoffs up in that chair, doing the same thing as in 2005. We won the cup, so I guess it was all because of me. I did run down after that final goal to watch all of the post game celebrations on the Big Screen. Finally, just this past spring as the Hawks were winning their 2nd Cup, I didn't have the office available since my wife's aunt is staying with us. But I did have the TV and the chair available in our bedroom. Yep, you guessed it, I was up in our room in the chair for the post season once again. I did have to estimate the distance from the chair to the TV, but I think I got it right.

Other than that, I don't think I'm too superstitious.

I also wear the same thing for the next game if they win, but that is not all. When I go, I sit in the same position in the car, listen to the same playlist on my iPod, and eat the same foods at the game at the same time. I think I am a little bit superstitious, haha. :p

I don't really have any superstitions though I tend to only wear my team's jerseys when they play at home and/or a big rivalry game. If I had more available money to spend, I would easily buy road jerseys for all my teams and wear the same thing as the teams do. (i.e. wear the gray Yankees jersey if I'm watching them play a road game on TV, wear the Giants blue jersey if they're at home or in a place where their opponents force them to wear blue as the visiting team, etc.)

I will knock on wood if the announcer says anything that seems like a jinx, such as Quarterback hasn't thrown an interception on 4th down in the red zone in 10 games or a player hasn't struck out with runners in scoring position in 25 at bats. I honestly get angry when they bring up those sort of stats. I will also sit somewhere else if things aren't going well. In the early 80s, my brother in law once made his little sister spend the whole 3rd period of an Islanders game in the bathroom because they scored when she was in there (and yes - they did win the game - and subsequently the Cup that year).

On Monday night my daughter brought me the Jets color rubber bank bracelet she made me because she noticed I didn't have it on when I was watching the game. I told her they were winning, so I couldn't put it on. She laughed and said, "it's only stupid if it doesn't work". Yup.

Back in the day my sister and I were watching the Mets and eating strawberry ice cream. Darryl Strawberry came up to bat with the bases loaded and we decided to take a spoonful right when the pitch hit his bat to help propel it into a homerun. My mom came into the room and joined us. When the ball was caught on the warning track I turned to my mom and noticed her ice cream looked funky. When I asked if it was strawberry she replied, "no - it's Cherry Garcia". I didn't speak to her for the rest of the day.

I'm starting to realize this thread makes me seem like a freak.

I wear Giants shirt and pants on every game day, and if the game is on a Sunday or a day off ill usualy make bacon and eggs for breakfast. That started back in 2003, when the Giants were riding a losing streak. I then ate that for breakfast one morning and they won. Have been doing it since

I just created a new superstition. If I'm searching a sports team's schedule on Google, that team will lose if I click on the result in the suggestions that come up. I have to type in the whole thing if I want them to win.

Ok, so can you do that for the NY Jets, Philly Flyers, NY Rangers, and Washington Capitals? Thanks! Haha

Pro athletes tend to be superstitious. Like, you don't see many players who wear #13. (Although the Dodgers-Cards playoff series has two, both of them stars: Hanley Ramirez and Matt Carpenter).

It seems since Super Bowl 42 that every time I watch a sports team that I love, they lose. So anyone that is a fan of Boston Sports (or the Orlando Magic) I apologize for the 2007/2011 Super Bowls, the last Red Sox game of 2011 against the Orioles, the entire 2012 Red Sox season, game one of this year's ALCS, and the Orlando Magic's 2009 NBA finals appearance.

Backing up this superstition: I turned off the Patriots game last night after the failed fourth down conversion with 2 minutes left. They won. I turned off the Red Sox game with two on in the 8th. They won. I'm not sure if I'm gifted or cursed.
