Yes they do, we saw it twice in late aug / early Sept this year. The mayor comes out and bemoans the fatc the train is late so the park cant open....then suprise the train arrives packed with all your faves. Its a sight and really seemed to catch many people out, very few camcorders filming it, except ours, no stills but have some hi8 footage.

I have been to WDW about 20 trips and have never seen this. Can I assume it is not done on the early entry days? Those are the only days I have ever been there when the park opens.

My family growing up and even now I am not a quick starter.

If you can let me know when they do this, I will try to do this with my daughter next year.

Thanks,
Mike

I also have only made opening once ( EE day ) and this didn't happen then either.

Yes, they still do this, but not on Extra Magic Hour days. There's a pic of it as may avatar and I have some others around here somewhere. I'll post them when I find them.

I was there for the very FIRST time they did that. I swear that they had characters literally riding on the roof of the train. Seemed like all of the big name characters where there.

The only problem with that opening though is that right after the last note in the song is played, they drop the ropes giving the characters no time to get to their areas for the autographs/pictures, which causes a lot of people to literally stop in the middle of the walk way until the spot the character their going after. CC does a good job at keeping the lines in order but sometimes, those lines can go forever and it clogs the streets sometimes for people who are just passing through though.

Oh well. Not much I can do about it.

Chances are though, that they'll add something new to it come Oct. 6th for the beginning of Magical Gatherings so it'll be fresh, because this entire thing started like four weeks after the 100 YoM celebration was over.

That is why I have never seen it. I have not been since 2000. When it was posted as do they still do this, I thought it was an old thing.

When they do it, is it exactly at opening time. So if the MK opens at 9:00, the train rolls in at 8:59? Or is this a longer thing where you need to shop up at 8:45 or something?

Its not a "Oh my God we have to be there NOW!" thing but its a good idea to get there around 8:15 if you really want to see it. Mainly because they herd everyone into that little area between the breeze ways in front of the station, and when it gets closer to opening, normally around 8:45 is when its normally packed in there. The mayor and the performers normally come out at about 8:55.....the mayor gives a speech. the dancers do their thing. The train blows its wistle and they break into "Casey Jones" as the train comes into the station. They bring the family that rides in with Mickey over to help open the park, they countdown from 10 and then it opens.

Then its a mad dash to the area where the characters are, AKA, running of the tourists, as some CMs call it...please dont kill me, Im only the messenger

I've heard the show...but it was basically a musical number...

"Main Theme" - A Kingdom Full of Endless Dreams
"Good Morning!"
"Zip-a-dee-Doo-Dah"
"Casey Junior"
"Zip-a-dee-Doo-Dah/Casey Junior"
"Countdown"
"Main Theme Reprise"

Not sure about any train being late... I do know someone who saw the show, and he reported it was a female announcer. *Shrug* Now I'm interested in seeing it! :D

"Running of the tourists".

I love it. There should be a thread (if there isnt one) of favorite CM sayings about tourists/guests.

So does anyone think if I took the Railroad tour i'd pretty much be guaranteed to see this ??

Well if you think about it, look at the Studios, what do a lot of them do? run to RnR and TOT...

Epcot is Test Track and ISTC

Animal Kingdom is the safari

Magic Kingdom....meh they run to get in line for the characters.

As far as the opening, just get there around 8:15-8:30 and you'll be able to see it. its a small window but that area can get a little cramped later when its close to opening.

We always use the EE on different parks each day, so I have missed this. On the mornings when MK has EE, does this take place before the park opens to the general public or for EE times?

Im not compeletly sure on that one. I believe that they dont do it on EE days mainly because the people inside the park already that are on MUSA would try to run back to the front to see it, and since some of them might be towards the Ice Cream area (mmmm...Ice cream), by the time they got up there, the breeze ways would be clogged with the people trying to get back to the area....see what Im saying?
