Do the DCA sums add up?

According to this -

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119257768823361264.html

- the original Disneyland expansion (car parks, hotels, downtown disney AND DCA) cost $1.4bn in total.

So, how come the newly announced DCA expansion is going to cost $1.1bn?

It's only going to see a few new attractions in the main park, one new area and some rethemeing.

They built the entire 2nd gate at Paris for $650m and have only spent $200m since on expansion. I know it wasn't a massive success, but it shows you what you can get for that money. They've built a Studio Tram, Crush Coaster, Rock n'Rollercoaster, Lights, Motors Action, Tower of Terror, the massive Studio One and several smaller rides and shows.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure DCA's expansion will cost a lot... but $1.1bn! Surely not...

Have we only seen part of the plan or something?

I'm guessing inflation, more complicated rides, etc....

Plus, just because they have a budget of $1.1 billion doesn't mean they have to spend it all.

But, there might be more plans that have yet to be revealed.

You should read the Miceage updates from the past few months. They explain it all very well.

But the short answer is this announcement on Wednesday was only the first jab at it. There are more announcements to come, after Christmas and through the opening of Midway Mania next summer.

It's a long story, and it involves some very petty local politicians who are trying to rezone the area around Disneyland for new housing. It is smart for Disney to drag out the announcements over a nine month period, leading up to the special election when the voters will decide on the rezoning initiatives for the land around Disneyland.

There are more rides and changes coming as part of the 1.1 Billion. If I were to guess, the stuff announced on Wednesday adds up to about 500 or 600 Million. There is more news coming in '08.
